NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

From former
New York Times reporter Nellie Bowles, a look at how some of the most educated people in America lost their minds—and how she almost did, too.

As a Hillary voter, a
New York Times reporter, and frequent attendee at her local gay bars, Nellie Bowles fit right in with her San Francisco neighbors and friends—until she started questioning whether the progressive movement she knew and loved was actually helping people. When her colleagues suggested that asking such questions meant she was “on the wrong side of history,” Bowles did what any reporter worth her salt would do: she started investigating for herself. The answers she found were stranger—and funnier—than she expected.

In
Morning After the Revolution, Bowles gives readers a front-row seat to the absurd drama of a political movement gone mad. With irreverent accounts of attending a multiday course on “The Toxic Trends of Whiteness,” following the social justice activists who run “Abolitionist Entertainment LLC,” and trying to please the New York Times’s “disinformation czar,” she deftly exposes the more comic excesses of a movement that went from a sideshow to the very center of American life.

Deliciously funny and painfully insightful,
Morning After the Revolution is a moment of collective psychosis preserved in amber. This is an unmissable debut by one of America’s sharpest journalists.

I've never reviewed a book before. Had to. So good, hilarious, brilliant. The Wi Spa chapter I had to share with friends and clients. Everyone laughed and started talking about openly and honestly. I supposed that's the point. I remember a bell hooks interview with Ice Cube where she says: Reach across the table. I could go on. Thanks Nellie. Really. XO Nick in SLC.

It was a good, fun read, and so many of the topics are of great concern. That is what makes me love the way Nellie writes about topics (TGIF!). She writes humorously and articulately about the themes in the book. It was good to revisit this period in time and how wild it was looking back on it.

I wouldn't agree with the author on most political issues. She is a pretty far left progressive. What drew me to the book was reading her intro to the book. While it confirmed what I already knew about the NYT, NPR and other left leaning media, I was curious about how she would report those stories. What I learned was we were in agreement on the importance of reporting those stories and not hiding them. While we may come to different conclusions on her reporting, I have great respect for her restraint from editorializing. I viewed a different perspective and came away with a broader view.

She reported what she saw. She didn't make political points or slant what she reported to manipulate the reader. She reported what was happening without trying to filter it. While they were real people and events they were often comical and entertaining on one hand and rather frightening on the other.

Whether you self identify as right or left, progressive or conservative, Republican, Democrat or independent this is a must read.

From reading her very funny TGIF column. So I ordered the book. It's compact. She gives the facts, and it's clear where she stands, but she doesn't belabor her opinion.

It's not as funny as her column. Her humor shows through, but it's a serious book.

It turns out I'd read two chapters already, one of them in the Atlantic.

This is not really humor or satire, and not really any analysis. It is just a bunch of "this happened" material, and it is all things of which most of us are aware.

Many jokes can be told about the last few years, but not in this book.

This should be required reading for everybody. It’s meant to be a humorous look at the absurdities of the political movements of 2020 and 2021, but in reality it’s quite horrifying. It’s like reading a chilling dystopian novel, but without the relief of knowing that the story is a cautionary fictional tale. This book is also extremely poignant in light of the protests on college campuses. For anybody who’s perplexed by the moral inversion of the anti-Israel movement, this book offers some solid perspectives of the lunacy and hypocrisy of these people.

I got to know Nellie Bowles via her endlessly entertaining Free Press TGIF column and this book didn’t disappoint. It also explains a lot about her as a person and her own evolved, and evolving, heterodox views. Hearing her so plainly lay out the generally ludicrous social, political, and, vis a vis, economic theories and recent history of modern progressivism and her healthy awakening from the stupor of this inane subculture is enlightening and I commend her for it. Perhaps most damaging to the leftists is that she doesn’t overtly criticize their inanity but just lays it all out there and lets their BS belief systems speak for themselves. A good read. And Nellie, I still think universal healthcare is an unnecessary evil. Focus on health.

Nellie’s experience speaks to a lot of regular people who do feel that the way certain ideologies captured the elites and the world is irrational and threatening. Great factual presentation of event that took place in America over the past years and thought provoking questioning of the motives behind those movements
