From former New York Times reporter Nellie Bowles, a look at how some of the most educated people in America lost their minds—and how she almost did, too.
As a Hillary voter, a New York Times reporter, and frequent attendee at her local gay bars, Nellie Bowles fit right in with her San Francisco neighbors and friends—until she started questioning whether the progressive movement she knew and loved was actually helping people. When her colleagues suggested that asking such questions meant she was “on the wrong side of history,” Bowles did what any reporter worth her salt would do: she started investigating for herself. The answers she found were stranger—and funnier—than she expected.
In Morning After the Revolution, Bowles gives readers a front-row seat to the absurd drama of a political movement gone mad. With irreverent accounts of attending a multiday course on “The Toxic Trends of Whiteness,” following the social justice activists who run “Abolitionist Entertainment LLC,” and trying to please the New York Times’s “disinformation czar,” she deftly exposes the more comic excesses of a movement that went from a sideshow to the very center of American life.
Deliciously funny and painfully insightful, Morning After the Revolution is a moment of collective psychosis preserved in amber. This is an unmissable debut by one of America’s sharpest journalists.

Rugged individualism is part of White Culture in the United States, the poster reads. Timeliness is white culture. Objective, rational, linear thinking is white culture. Self-reliance is white culture. Being action-oriented and future-oriented are both white culture. The nuclear family is white culture.121 Kindle readers highlighted thisPopular highlight
Under Tema, the anti-racism movement could shift from a political movement grounded in facts to an emotional and spiritual one. The battle did not need to be about structural realities and governments. It could be about ourselves. Objectivity—facts—it’s all racist. Whiteness is a virus that kills.113 Kindle readers highlighted thisPopular highlight
But my ideal reader for this book, if I’m being honest, is someone like myself, someone who now feels a little tribeless, a person of curiosity, someone whose politics are more exhaustion than doctrine.98 Kindle readers highlighted this

She reported what she saw. She didn't make political points or slant what she reported to manipulate the reader. She reported what was happening without trying to filter it. While they were real people and events they were often comical and entertaining on one hand and rather frightening on the other.
Whether you self identify as right or left, progressive or conservative, Republican, Democrat or independent this is a must read.
It's not as funny as her column. Her humor shows through, but it's a serious book.
It turns out I'd read two chapters already, one of them in the Atlantic.
Many jokes can be told about the last few years, but not in this book.
