A “witty thriller” (The New York Times) for middle-grade readers about how the Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre, how the robbery made the portrait the most famous artwork in the world—and how the painting by Leonardo da Vinci should never have existed at all.

SIBERT MEDAL WINNER • BOSTON GLOBE—HORN BOOK AWARD WINNER • ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR:
Publishers Weekly, School Library Journal, Booklist, Kirkus Reviews, NPR, The New York Public Library, The Chicago Public Library, The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

On a hot August day in Paris, just over a century ago, a desperate guard burst into the office of the director of the Louvre and shouted,
La Joconde, c’est partie! The Mona Lisa, she’s gone!

No one knew who was behind the heist. Was it an international gang of thieves? Was it an art-hungry American millionaire? Was it the young Spanish painter Pablo Picasso, who was about to remake the very art of painting?

Travel back to an extraordinary period of revolutionary change: turn-of-the-century Paris. Walk its backstreets. Meet the infamous thieves—and detectives—of the era. And then slip back further in time and follow Leonardo da Vinci, painter of the
Mona Lisa, through his dazzling, wondrously weird life. Discover the secret at the heart of the Mona Lisa—the most famous painting in the world should never have existed at all.

Here is a middle-grade nonfiction, with black-and-white illustrations by Brett Helquist throughout, written at the pace of a thriller, shot through with stories of crime and celebrity, genius and beauty.

To quote p. 39, "The Mona Lisa being stolen was impossible, but impossible things were happening every day, sometimes before breakfast." That line is a nod to Lewis Carroll's line in Alice in Wonderland, in which the Queen believes "six impossible things before breakfast." And that is an excellent example of Nicholas Day's breezy and clever writing style.

Compelling and highly readable nonfiction for ages 10 to 14, so I would call it Upper MG. The writing is fast-paced, friendly, and clever, as if a trusted teacher was telling you a true story, filled with amazing facts. Most of all, it's highly entertaining. A fascinating look at the world of 1911 and how quickly everything was changing. Electricity, automobiles, planes, cinema, and the birth of forensic science. Occasional flashbacks delve into the world of Leonardo da Vinci in the late 1400s and early 1500s. But the bulk of this narrative nonfiction is about the theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in 1911, which made it the most famous painting in the world. Before that, it was just another painting.

This is fun to read. And the black and white illustrations by Brett Helquist (of A Series of Unfortunate Events fame) add to the allure. The book would be even more fun in the classroom. There are a lot of names to remember! But if you're studying it in a classroom, you could keep track. Includes extensive backmatter.

The Mona Lisa Vanishes is a fun and funny book, but filled with facts and history. It begins with a quick overview of the improbabilities of Leonardo da Vinci's life and of Lisa Gherardini sitting for a portrait by Leonardo. The main story is about the theft of the Mona Lisa, a small, inconsequential painting by the master, and how it became the most famous, expensive painting in the world simply because it was stolen.
The book is written in a non-linear fashion. The author enumerates the many talents and eccentricities of Leonard da Vinci and gives a brief history of his life. The reader learns about the Louvre, the famous convoluted museum in Paris which contains many of the world's most treasured art pieces. The book tells stories about the men investigating the theft and the detectives they admired. The author tells of Picasso, his paintings, and his troubles. Much more information is included, all interspersed and intermingled.
The book is humorous, which helps to counterbalance what might otherwise be a plethora of dry facts for young readers. I felt there was quite a significant disparity in the tone. Some parts, particularly at the beginning, were almost silly and felt aimed toward a young audience, perhaps elementary school. Later parts, however, seemed to lose much of the levity and even had some graphic descriptions of violence, making me hesitant to recommend the book to younger than middle school readers. The book was very entertaining and informational. I enjoyed reading it.

The Mona Lisa Vanishes is one of the best non-fiction books I have read in years. Including adult non-fiction. The writing was exciting, interesting and I learned a lot. There are wonderful drawings throughout the book by Brett Helquist. His illustrations helped considerably in making The Series of Unfortunate Events, books so popular. This would make a terrific gift for any age reader. It is terrific and award worthy.

The 7th grader I got this for liked it, but overall I found it trite and not very well-written - I also think this is more of a 5th grade book.

A wonderful story, wonderfully told about the stealing of the Mona Lisa. Filled with wit and insight, written in an informal style, Day keeps the pages turning and suspense building with flashbacks to the creation of the Mona Lisa by the ever fascinating Leonardo Da Vinci. (As shown, it is a miracle that this famous work of art was ever painted all at.) The book’s main theme: why did it take so long for the police to find the amateur thief who pulled the job. We follow flawed but determined police inspectors who have their own theories and unusual methods and colorful suspects, including the youthful Pablo Picasso who does not come off well. Without being preachy or didactic, Day touches upon larger subjects and provides a space for the youthful reader to think about questions such as: What is fame? How does a person or an object get to be famous? And, why do people let themselves be distracted by the “better story” and not pay attention to the facts at hand. Questions clearly pertinent for our time.

I had no idea that the Mona Lisa had been stolen and that this act had made it famous. I learned so much about the painter, the crime, and life in the early 1900s. I remember seeing the Mona Lisa 20 years ago in the Louvre and was surprised at how small it was. The history of the painting definitely makes it larger than life. I’m so glad to see more middle grade nonfiction published. It did skip around quite a bit and that might confuse some younger readers.

I'm 37 and I'm aware that this book is supposed to be for teens, but I inhaled it anyway and learned so much! My favorite part was the thread about Picasso and his friend Apollinaire, who got mixed up in the investigation because Apollinaire was letting a guy sleep on his couch who got into the habit of occasionally snatching little statues from the Louvre and giving them to his host as thank you gifts. Picasso and Apollinaire's panicked behavior when they realized they might be in trouble was masterfully presented. Lovely, exciting book!
