Missing Pieces: An AFK Book (Hello Neighbor #1) (1) Paperback – August 28, 2018

Lock your doors! From the creators of the blockbuster horror video game Hello Neighbor comes the story that started it all. Unravel the mystery in this gripping prequel novel!

Nicky Roth has always been a lonely kid. But that all changes when he and his family move to Raven Brooks and meet their eccentric neighbors, the Petersons. Nicky befriends the Petersons' son, Aaron, bonding over their talents for tinkering. Soon the boys are inseparable and using their skills to pull pranks on the townspeople. But something about Aaron bothers Nicky--people seem almost afraid of him and his family. Through snippets from Aaron and a lot of sleuthing in the town's archives, Nicky discovers a dark past haunting his neighbors, a streak of bad luck they can't seem to shake. Aaron thinks that's all behind them now, but Nicky has a feeling the Petersons are fated for another tragedy. . . . This pulse-pounding prequel novel to the hit video game Hello Neighbor includes two-color illustrations throughout, to help readers unwind the mystery at the heart of the game.

I love Hello Neighbor, and I'll say this: the game had a lot of "huh?" Moments, which I both liked and didn't like, but having the (as of writing this) four pieces that make up the story so far (2 books and 2 games) that flaw gets thrown out the window.

The book is so fun to read and knows how to make your reader feel the suspense of Mr. Peterson sneaking up to you.

If you need a holiday gift or even just feel like buying a book for you or a friend, you can't go wrong with this one.

My 8 year old son loved the book! So I bought two and three, but he got bored half way into volume two..... So if you are thinking about buying it to a 2nd grader, it's probably better to just buy one volume at a time.

HELLO NEIGHBOR
Missing Pieces

Carly Ann West

Review by Author Roy Murry

'Neighbor' is Nicky's story, who moves with his parents into a town with a burnt down amusement park. Across the street lives another twelve-year-old named Aaron, his parents, and his sister.

Two notes that set the tone at the beginning of this somewhat creepy novel are words of wisdom from Nick's parents: "Lu, he's twelve. He is barely human at this age," and "Remember, the family makes you stronger."

On the other side of the street lives the weak and disturbed family of Aaron Peterson. His father is living through a mental hell about what happened at the amusement park.

The two boys’ bond, break into the park using their unique ability to unlock locks, and, in another event, get into legal trouble costing their parents needed monies. Split apart, the boy with the strong family ties survives.

When Nicky tries to reunite with Aaron, Aaron leaves a bloody note for Nicky - I make bad things happen. What has happened? You will need to read book two in the series to find out.

I don't recommend this novel for a ten-year-old even though there are some excellent qualities to the read. A twelve-year-old may understand some of the deep thoughts and words intoned.

Note: I have helped bring up two boys who are doing well in their forties.

This book was bought for my children who are always playing this game. They wanted to know more about was going on and this book was perfect for that. It also helped them when playing. The book arrived in great shape. Will definitely buy the next book.

My son tore through this book. I've never seen him so eager to go into his room and read. He was gripped from beginning to the end, and couldn't wait to read part 2 when he was done. It's an excellent prequel to the game that makes you want to run back and play it all over again.

The book is engaging, thrilling and hilarious. But underneath it all is a horrible tragic story if loss, mental instability, and borderline supernatural mystery. 5/5 recommended for sure.
