Differant then expected , but in a good way ..... as the movie was a late comer to the series and many finalies to a series never usually complete the storyline or end up completly off track/base and fizzel in story , acting or vissuals . ~ The beginning threw me at first but easily brought you back to memories of the first three movies and decently updated the story with little to no confusion . ~ The movie was not perfect but did a nice job of earlier memories and then ending the story line in a /decent fashion as leaving you basicly satisfied having seen all for movies and not leaving you thinking ... "what now , was that it , what happened to ..(so & so ) , etc . ~

Worth the watch , worth the 4k disc puchase , and worth a couple more watching sessions at minimal (at least in my opinion) .

Possible spoilers. In my lifetime of watching movies, there are only a handful that left my jaw-dropped or had me jumping out of my socks. The original 1999 “The Matrix” was one of them. From that opening scene when Trinity had to fight off dozens of police and other men in black suits, skinny black ties and sunglasses, I was hooked. The first sequel was nearly as good but the second dropped off a bit, except for a perfect conclusion. So now, 18 years later, Lana Wachowski takes on an attempt to…uh, resurrect the franchise, this time without her sister, Lilly.

I re-watched the trilogy before taking on this film but I’m not sure I needed to. It is as if, it is a condensed version of those films. Early on, a character named Bugs (Jessica Henwick, “Love and Monsters”) does her excellent recreation of that Trinity sequence from the first movie. She has a similar role. That is, approach Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) who is back in his civilian role as an ace programmer who was successful at creating a video game called The Matrix. His boss is now Smith played by Jonathan Groff, (“Hamilton”) as the original actor Hugo Weaving was busy.

Groff does his best to imitate that slithering cadence of Weaving’s iconic way of talking. Smith and “the board” want a sequel to the game. Thomas Anderson/Neo will also be reintroduced to the new Morpheus (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, “Aquaman”) replacing Laurence Fishburne. Anderson/Neo will of course take the right pill, especially if there is a chance to see his true love, Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss).

In an interesting set up, he will meet Trinity in a coffee shop, but she is called Tiffany, is married and has a couple kids and has no idea to Anderson/Neo is. How’s this all going to work. The trip back inside the Matrix will find Trinity still alive, hooked up to one of those pods and submerged in fluid. The question is, has the head machine kept his word and honored the peace. Guess not.

There are a couple disappointments in this film. Neo seems to have no real powers like he used to. He’s somewhat limited to tossing out a force field with his hands. Something many superheroes can do. There’s a ridiculous amount of unnecessary mumbo jumbo, much of it coming from a new character called The Analyst (Neil Patrick Harris, “Downsizing”) who is Anderson’s shrink. A returning character in the original series, Niobe is still played by Jada Pinkett Smith who for some reason appears to have aged 50 years instead of 18. That made no sense. And then the inability of the scores of “Smith” clones going after our good guys to somehow miss wounding anyone takes that aspect to new levels of ineptitude. In one scene, the baddies are chasing down the goodies in a passageway, firing automatic weapons with hundreds or thousands of bullets but can't hit anyone. One good guy with a handgun is somehow lethal, however. Please stop.

The movie isn’t all bad, however. The reuniting of Neo and Trinity is great. Their pairing and feelings for each other is certainly a major component for the franchise’s success. There is also a well-done action sequence in the final act introduces a couple new tricks. Did this film need to be made? No. But it could introduce a new audience/generation to one of the great science-fiction masterpieces in movie history.
