"It has been a while since I devoured a book on architecture with as much pleasure. I love a good section and I love this book."—Aaron Betsky, Architect Magazine

Award-winning architects Paul Lewis, Marc Tsurumaki, and David J. Lewis's essential guide to section. Section, along with plan and elevation, is one of the most important representational techniques of architectural design. Manual of Section is the first book to provide a framework to describe and evaluate this fundamental design process in architecture.

Divided into seven categories of section based on extensive archival research:
• Range is from simple one-story buildings to complex structures
• Features stacked forms, fantastical shapes, internal holes, inclines, sheared planes, nested forms, or combinations of each
• Includes sixty-three intricately detailed cross-section perspective drawings of many of the most significant structures in international architecture from the last one hundred years

"A must-read for all designers associated with the built environment and should surely be on the library shelves of every architecture, urban design and interior design school...the intricate drawings provided by LTL are sure to inspire all those who have the privilege of cracking the spine of this amazing reference." —Spacing

In addition to the incredible cross-section drawings, the book includes smart and accessible essays on the history and uses of section.

Manual of Section has become a top architecture book for architecture students and professional architects.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"As history shows, section has always been considered as a representational method first, and its input on architectural discourse is still largely undermined. Manual of Section successfully attempts to reintroduce sections within theoretical discourses; a new reference book for architects." – ArchDaily

"
It has been a while since I devoured a book on architecture with as much pleasure. I love a good section and I love this book. It might be perverse and old fashioned, but the section opens a world in architecture in which I gladly, with this book as my Baedeker Guide, go wandering." – Aaron Betsky, Architect Magazine

A book make me know how to read others’ section, how to draw a useful section and see architecture design from another perspective. Read one section per day and write notes on it with pencil, love it.

I use this book as an educational tool for teaching speculative sections for my architecture studio and seminar classes. Having been taught by Paul Lewis, I find this book really helpful for students to understand the competition and diagrammatic section. These sectional drawings are also really clear, as great case-studies for any architect or designer to further study the buildings that are highlighted. Excellent book.

Not only the method of drawing is a great learning material but the precedents in this book are great case study! Very helpful for architecture students! Plus great value!

Fantastic for learning how to draw and format section drawings as well as quick info on the buildings drawn. Bought this for myself and it quickly became the most borrowed book in studio.

This is a great premise for a book– a kind of utilitarian, X-ray vision to study iconic examples of architecture. Some of these buildings you'll know well, but you'll be able to see them from the inside out. There's something mesmerizing about these drawings, akin to the fascination of see-through books of the human body– the invisible man– with layers showing arteries, muscles, veins, etc. Not least, the drawings are lucid and consistent, allowing an unfiltered transparency that is uniform regardless of the individual building.

Received this book this morning, and it is great for the price. The negatives - Paper quality is not great and the sections are all interrupted by the crease in the middle of the book.

However, there is a good deal of content that covers a lot of buildings and types and the intro essays are fun. Drawings are generally pretty detailed and fun to look at. Overall, it is a good reference book to have in your library, especially for the price.

An amazing new look at familiar buildings. I already new something about every building in the book, but the new way of looking at each taught me something about each one. It's a useful teaching tool to explain sectional spacial relationships and it's really beautiful.

Manual of Section is a thorough study of an important component of architectural structure design. I am learning so much and have fostered an in-depth appreciation of what is critically necessary for designing and bringing to reality beautiful spaces that can elevate physical, visual and sensory perceptions.

¡Saludos!
