The LEKATO WS-70 Vs. Active Pickups and Cables
5 out of 5 stars
The LEKATO WS-70 Vs. Active Pickups and Cables
This review will cover the following: Active pickups, Tone, sustain, noise, and audio waveforms.First things first: the LEKATO WS-70 works with active pickups.I have no issues using this wireless system with my guitar equipped with Seymour Duncan Blackout Active pickups w/ an Energizer Lithium 9V battery.Second thing: there is an audible TONE difference between the WS-70 and a guitar cable.The WS-70 has less top end (tone/brightness) than my Mogami Gold instrument cable and my cheap Chinese made cable that ships with [some] guitars. This is not a bad thing at all; I actually prefer the WS-70's tone compared to my Mogami. The WS-70 sounds less shrill/ear-piercing in the treble spectrum while the Mogami does sound harsh.I suppose (educated guess) the LEKATO doesn't reproduce the higher treble frequencies the same as a cable. Overall, it sounds great in comparison with a cable; you can always adjust your preamp settings to account for any treble frequencies lost using this wireless system.Third: Sustain.There is audibly less sustain from the WS-70 in comparison to a cable; about a second less in my case. Not a big deal.Fourth: Noise.My Mogami Gold Instrument cable produces 60's cycle hum & hiss with my Hughes & Kettner Grandmeister Deluxe 40 Tube Amp. The LEKATO WS-70 does not produce 60's cycle hum at all, just hiss. It is significantly less noisy in comparison to a cable. As for the hiss, it can be removed with a noise gate.Fifth and lastly: Audio Waveforms.When recording into a DAW, the waveform of a cable is dynamic with peaks. The waveform of the WS-70 is more linear/smooth with no peaks. Is this compression? I'm not sure. Take this information with a grain of salt.Overall, the WS-70 is a great sounding system, and I would buy it again especially at its current price. Want to know about battery life, reliability and range? Check out the other reviews for that. I literally wrote this review after two hours of owning this system. O_o

When I purchased these I was in a bind. I was set to play somewhere unique, and using a guitar cord/cable would be a difficult thing. The plan was for the musicians to move around, even off the stage, and I didn't like the idea of dragging a long cable around with me. I looked into cordless options before, but they were pretty expensive at the time, so I shelved the idea. Fast forward to this new situation. I decided to look into the cordless options again, and there's still some expensive one's, but not as expensive as they used to be. I went back and forth, about how much I should spend, trying to decide if I could even trust the technology to provide a clear, uninterrupted signal. I should add that I didn't, and never have had a lot of money to spend. After reading a ton of reviews, and technical specs, I decided to try these. I figured that I could take a guitar cord with me just in case, but, as it turned out, I didn't need to use the cord. This wireless receiver and transmitter worked flawlessly, and the internal, rechargeable batteries lasted longer than expected. A lot longer.
I'd planned on doing a Pepsi challenge, with these versus a cord, but it would be like comparing Pepsi to toilet water. Not that I'd ever drank toilet water, but I can't imagine liking it better than Pepsi. If you're looking for a wireless option for your instrument, and you want something that's reliable, without sacrificing sound, you should give these a try. They're affordable, and they work great. I doubt I'll ever use a guitar cord again.

All you string player musicians need to give this unit some cred. I use it on my violin and on my mandolin and it is sooooooo easy. I gave it a full night charge when I first got it. Very simple to charge as it comes with a USB split cable that you plug into a USB port (I used my Samsung phone charger) and then take the two leads to each of the wireless units.

I was smiling that one of the little units has a picture of a guitar (for the transmitter) and the other a picture of a soundboard (I think?) as the receiver that plugs into an amp or the PA board. When plugging into my instruments there was absolutely no weight difference unlike some of the bulky bodypacks from desktop units. I use a violin with a Fishman bridge pickup (V300) and a 1/4" Carpenter Jack. One little thing to make sure is when you plug in the transmitter, make sure you hear it click into its final place. The same goes with plugging into an amp. Make sure the receiver is completely in and connected.

When you push the circular "on" button on each of the units it comes up with a comfortable little green LED that flashes as they find each other (love at first switch!) and then steady green when they connect. So my first test was to plug right into my Fishman amp and use the onboard effects. Walked around the living room, walked upstairs to the bedroom, played a Sonata in the bathroom (Hey, get your minds out of the gutter!) My house is small but the wireless played through and around all the walls. I think I put it through a range of around 40 feet at its longest. Definitely good enough range to play on a small stage where you can still hear your amp as your stage monitor.

Oh and did I mention this is around $50 street price!!!! Come on, that's amazing even if it you use this as a backup for your more expensive units!

I haven't finished testing all the technical stuff like knowing that this supports 70 channels to connect with. I need to test with multiple units on stage at once (yes, i bought another one so that my guitarist partner can use one too!)

So here's some important stuff for you wireless nerds. There was NO noticeable latency in the signal. I played some pretty stiff arpeggios and it was responsive and clear to my ears. Next I listened really close to the frequency response from a gritty G string all the way to 7th position on the E (yeah, i still remember how to do that!). I tried this with multiple violins to make sure that each one of their characters came through, In one case I think I liked the sound response better than my old Sh_re unit. It was very clear on the high end and positively dark gypsy on the low end when I played that style.

What didn't I like,,,, well I really haven't put the battery power to test since I haven't used this yet in multiple four hour set gigs. The specs say "Convenient Charging : The wireless guitar transmitter and receiver built-in rechargeable lithium battery, working time is above 4.5 hours(circumstantial)after fully charged, and comes with a dual-ended USB cable for convenient recharging, which ensures good performance for your every show." Circumstantial means keep a USB charger along with your kit and definitely keep an instrument cable nearby just in case.

Anyways, I was doing wireless violin back when they first came out. I like the direction these little units do for the working musician in present time!

A Favor:
* Son económicos (comparados con otras marcas).
* Son compactos y robustos.
* No interfieren con equipos de WiFi (por trabajar en rango de frecuencias UHF)
* Son muy fáciles de usar. Solo oprimes el botón de encendido en ambos y automáticamente se identifican entre sí.
* No he detectado caídas en la señal. Los he utilizado por 2 ó más horas, en movimiento sin una sola pérdida de señal.
* Los agudos/graves se escuchan igual que con el cable físico. Es decir, no sentí que los transmisores añadan ningún tipo de coloración en la señal
* Vienen precargados.
