I was much more engaged with this film than that one. I think one thing that helped me resonate with it is I'm incredibly familiar with the type of setting. I've grown up in apartment buildings my whole life, and this movie does an incredible job of nailing that feeling. There's so many shots in this film that made me think to myself, "that's exactly how a quarantined demon-infested apartment building would feel/look".
The actors are great. None of them felt obnoxious or apathetic. The leading lady in particular was great, though I hope she forgives me for forgetting her name. But they're all good.
Some of the more recent comments about this series from the creators makes me nervous. It sounds like they could be taking it in a direction I'd hate, mass produced stuff made on a deadline instead of anything interesting or fun. It could be a death knell for a cult icon and I don't know what they're thinking.
But this would be a great last gasp before the tumble downward. I don't wanna be too negative about a future that is yet to be, so I'll just say that this movie is great and occupies a unique place in the series. It's also great as a stand-alone horror movie, if my fanboy yapping turned you off. Don't let unfamiliarity stop you from checking it out.
In a sense, this is a perfectly fine sequel: the evil reappears, people die, what more could you ask for? Lots of blood at some points too.
Well, what I could ask for is more light so I could actually /see/ the special/makeup effects which are clearly there but not clearly seeable.
All in all, I found this more annoying than entertaining.
Great film start to finish, I forget if there are special features, but please bring back the DVD formats with the BTS extras. Streaming is overrated.
