As I don't have as much time for video games these days (my wife only plays Plants vs Zombies which she has mastered), I often buy games months after their release allowing for numerous patches before I pick it up. The exceptions are titles like Gran Turismo, Uncharted, Metal Gear, Mass Effect, etc. Even playing this game March to May of 2015 (70+ hours to finish and not even close to finishing all side quests), I had a few game glitches that forced a complete system shutdown and reload. I think that happened twice. Another time I got a little too curious about a conversation branch and the quick load put me inside of a locked room with no way out. I ended up having to load my previous save and play the (thankfully very short) side mission again. One frustrating issue came in a level where depending on where you stood in proximity of a door it would load you into different parts of the map. Luckily, this issue was well documented online so a quick google on my android phone or iPad usually solved the few nasty glitches encountered.
Given the scale of the game, it's understandable they can't find all of the bugs, but some of these are well documented enough you would think that there is time to fix them. I only noticed a massive slow down in an in game rendered scene with a very large crowd. Looking at the crowd, there was way too much detail on every single NPC in the cut scene. Due to their movement, I feel like they could have toned down the detail a little bit to get it to run smoother on the PS4. Most people wouldn't notice and the game would run faster. It got borderline choppy. It only happened in that one scene, but it was memorable since that was one of my favorite missions in the entire game. One other gripe is the small inventory. Why not allow an infinite bag? This way there is no money left on the table once your bag gets too full. Towards the end of the game when my mage tank was nearly invincible and most powerful, I literally ignored loot once my bag got full. Also, why can't I get a faster horse? I'm thinking it might have something to do with frame rate which they could solve by blurring the world a little at speed.
Some of the main missions in this game play out like a two hour movie. I definitely have a few favorites in mind and reading online YouTube comments it's great to see that Bioware has a little something for everyone. Missions other people loved I thought were okay and my favorite mission (a grand ball) was one people tended to dread. The writing is mostly hit with the great side quests and main missions. There was the occasional NPC with some obscure mission that has you trekking to the other side of the map to spread some ashes, but for the most part they make sense and often play a small part in a much larger story.
The sound of this game is exceptional and often forced me to swing the camera around so that whoever is speaking is directly in front of me so the audio comes out of my center channel. If I could go back and change the way I played, I would focus on two branches of magic to completely unlock them and ignore the rest. My party was two mages, rogue, and a warrior. Crafting weapons and armor in the game is pretty cool, but another small gripe is the limited amount of potions you can carry and no healing magic spells until near the end of the game. The spell available is pretty awesome, but it can only be cast once without rest (revive and heal everyone plus a glyph that continues to heal anyone who stands near it).
The difficulty level is just right and I only had to look up a few puzzles online. I am still working through a back log of PS4 games on my wishlist and most of them have had significant price drops by now. I probably won't get a chance to revisit this world again. I just hope Bioware can keep it up with their next game.
Like most massive open world games, it can be buggy and in all the time played, I have had the game force close maybe three times. Most bugs or glitches could be solved by saving and closing the game then reopening, leaving the area and coming back. Don't let this deter you-- never at any point did this break the game experience or make it feel unplayable. The character development is one very unique aspect for this game and you may find yourself uniquely drawn to or repelled by certain characters and want to invest more in certain interactions. Your decisions sometimes have small consequences or cause a huge difference in the story. I love how each character manages to avoid stereotype and how the lines between good and evil are blurred by both history and circumstance. It's a very deep game if you don't run through it with blinders on. Sure, you can beat the game in a handful of hours if you do, but you defeat the purpose of building a real team and the rewards that come from curiosity.
I loved how each class and race had its own affinities, strengths and weaknesses etc. character building felt like a worthwhile cause. I also really enjoyed the huge amount of time you could dump into crafting. You could easily skirt by with what you find, but I liked to make unique pieces and tailor them to my impression of the character. The specializations could have been better but they do make it very easy to reassign skill points with an easy to obtain item. I liked the way battle skills were assigned to buttons and the flow of battle always kept me engaged rather than just holding/mashing a button and waiting for the battle to pass.
I loved the voice acting with the exception of the male American accent. It sounded so ridiculous, I always used the other one. The other actors really shined though and fit the characters to a T.
Overall, if you're an open world action RPG fan, do not pass this one up. It easily became my second favorite and I absolutely demand a sequel. They set it up for a really phenomenal epic game experience. It could be better than Skyrim easily with a few tweaks. It stands alone as a unique fantasy experience and I am very happy I joined the enthusiastic masses that flock to this series. Don't pass up the DLC; they are chockful of substantial content and story.
