Here is “happily ever after”—except when things aren’t happy, and when “ever after” is abruptly terminated by divorce, tragedy . . . or even murder. With her large-hearted understanding of how movies—and audiences—work, leading film historian Jeanine Basinger traces the many ways Hollywood has tussled with the tricky subject of marriage, explicating the relationships of countless marriages from Blondie and Dagwood to the heartrending couple in the Iranian A Separation, from Coach and his wife in Friday Night Lights to Tracy and Hepburn, and even to Laurel and Hardy (a marriage if ever there was one). A treasure trove of insight and sympathy, illustrated with scores of wonderfully telling movie stills, posters, and ads.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for Jeanine Basinger's I Do and I Don't

“Fascinating. . . . The real fun comes from the splendidly crafted, creative, compelling critiques that make you want to see many movies again or for the first time.”
The Boston Globe

“A breezy, fun excursion into Hollywood’s presentation of matrimony. . . . Deeply personal.”
Los Angeles Times

“A witty look at how films portray marriage, and how these onscreen contradictions mirror the institution itself.”
O, The Oprah Magazine

“Comprehensive and cleverly written . . . a necessary addition to our understanding of movies about marriage.”
The Washington Post

“Authoritative and perceptive. . . . Crammed with summaries and analysis of films from the past 100 years,
I Do and I Don’t brilliantly demonstrates Hollywood’s abiding ambivalence about the institution of matrimony.”
The Wall Street Journal

“An insightful account of how films have represented wedlock, both holy and unholy, through the years. . . . Basinger has a gift for zeroing in on tantalizing details that bring a visual medium to readable life.”
USA Today

“Lively. . . . Knowing and illuminating. . . . Hollywood movies of the studio era were not, as Basinger takes pains to point out, produced by naifs. Many of them convey sophisticated references to sexual intercourse, prostitution, even homosexuality—if you know how to interpret them. That some of us still do is often thanks to popular scholars like Basinger. . . . Hilarious, spot-on.”
Salon

“Basinger [is] one of the great film gurus. . . . An exhaustive survey of its subject. . . . Basinger is wonderfully insightful, and her witty asides made me laugh out loud. . . . Ultimately Basinger makes a fine case for the place of marriage movies in particular and American moviemaking in general.”
—Judith Newman,
The New York Times

“[Basinger’s] writing is strong, the vision clear. . . . The amount of titles discussed and revisited are staggering. . . . Informative and witty. . . . Deft.”
Slant Magazine

“A spikily opinionated voice congenial to a diverse readership: barbed observations for the casual fan and a hog heaven of footnotes for the tenure track cineaste.”
San Francisco Chronicle

“Thanks to her impeccable research and thoroughly entertaining prose, Basinger provides a take on matrimony that is never less than fascinating. Nimbly moving through history, she illustrates the lengths to which Hollywood has gone in order to make the institution of marriage exciting enough to attract audiences looking for escapism. . . . A riveting lesson in history and pop psychology, one that will appeal to film buffs of just about every stripe, not only those interested in happily ever after.”
Entertainment Weekly

“Breezily written, aggressively researched. . . . Basinger manages to map out the terrain of the world of marriage that movies cover with the skill of an experienced cartographer who isn’t afraid to stop and enjoy the view once in a while.”
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

“[An] entertaining take on how the silver screen has portrayed wedded bliss and wedded misery. . . . The main pleasure here is Basinger’s explication of how the movies and stars of the studio system years made all this work. . . . Fascinating, fact-filled.”
Kirkus Reviews

I love anything written by Jeanine Basinger! As archivist for actress Maureen O'Hara and editor/designer of her official website, all of Jeanine's books are on my library shelf (now on my Kindle Fire). Her take on classic films and actors are invaluable to my research. This latest book did not disappoint.

To me it isn't just what the script writer did with his/her characters, but how it was handled and interpreted by the actors and directors. In my generation (1940s) we were taught the "cottage with the white picket fence" and "happily ever after" concept of marriage but Hollywood added a reality spin to it; some glamorous and some not-so-glamorous. It was quite an adventure from the front row center of the movie theater. I feel that Jeanine gathers it all and sorts through the maze of this fascinating history. Another book....well done. Thanks Jeanine.

I started reading this last night and I am hooked! I Do and I Dont is a very interesting book that brings up examples of marriage in a movie. This is a captivating read that does take a closer look at the problems and triumphs of marriage. However, there is one part that I don't understand. In one of the footnotes of the Kindle version, the author mentions Gone with the Wind and states that Rhett is Scarlett O'Hara's fourth husband. That is a mistake as Rhett is Scarlett's third husband.

I expected this book to be a lightweight review of marriages in movies. I was pleasantly surprised as it was a thoughtful, well considered review of the role of marriage in films. I consider myself a film buff and this book mentioned some I was unfamiliar with. This could serve as a start to a reference paper on the portrayal of marriage in Western culture. Comments were thoughtful and served to raise awareness as to studio representation of men, women and the role of marriage. I thoroughly enjoyed this thoughtful read and will look for further work by this author.

I have seen a number of these films the author mentions. I agree with her description of them. Movies are NOT the reality of life, on this subject; Few real Hollywood marriages were long lasting. But the analysis was very good. You have to stick to the subject to get everything out of it. I skim a lot of books before I decide to read the whole book. This one I went over again and again.

If you are into movies, this is a seminal work.
Basinger is a first class writer giving a birds eye view

I Do and I Don't may have seemed a good theses, before the writing - but marriage and movies and Hollywood now all live in worlds far away from the 1930s, and the lions share of Jeanine Basinger's argument, is an exploration of long long ago - when marriage was central to movies, and movies dealt with a repressed twin-bed imagining of what went on before closed doors. A cascade of marriage movies has been the theatres over the past year: Before Midnight, Fill the Void, Love is All You Need, Still Mine, Rust & Bone, Amour - none of these Hollywood works.

Basinger writes well, and insightfully, so for those, reminscent of a certain time, old Hollywood classics will generate sentimental pleasure - remembering a long ago time....
