The Blue Beetle will remind you of Marvel's Iron Man because Riaz's suit is highly-intelligent A.I. sophisticated technology, he flies around, agile and strong like Spider-Man, and uses martial arts like the characters do in the Cobra Kai TV show. It's a perfect movie with the right blend of action, comedy, suspense, great family interactions, the hero falls in love with a beautiful woman, and the plot is interesting. Even though the film has an origin story like so many super-hero movies that some fans get tired of, it makes sense for the writer of the movie to show the origin since Blue Beetle is not as popular as the main popular super-heroes: Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Thor, Captain America, The Flash, and Harley Quinn. I recommend Blue Beetle because it's fun, exciting, and timeless it is. It has a sci-fi feel to it too. If you like the alien symbiotes Venom and Carnage from Marvel Comics, this movie is to a point down your alley. I highly recommend Blue Beetle 🪲

Shame on me for not looking more closely at the details of the 4K version of this movie before hitting the "buy" button. If I had, I would have realized that this is a 4K only product, which departs from the typical packaging of both a 4K and Blu-ray HD disc in the case. To be fair, the product listing does not say that a Blu-ray version is also included, so this is my bad. But I am disappointed nonetheless.

Irgendwo in der Antarktis entdeckt eine Forschungsexpedition des Großunternehmens "Kord Industries" den so genannten Skarabäus - ein außerirdisches Artefakt, das seinem Träger gewisse Kräfte bietet, aber theoretisch auch angezapft werden kann, um diese auf andere Technologieträger zu transferieren. Letzteres hat die Konzernchefin Victoria Cord auch vor, allerdings wird der Skarabäus von ihrer Nichte Jenny, die der Meinung ist, dass Kord Industries seine Finger aus der Waffenproduktion heraushalten sollte, entwendet und gerät in die Hände des frisch gebackenen College-Absolventen Jaime Reyes. Bei diesem fühlt sich das Artefakt dermaßen wohl, dass es sich mit ihm verbindet und im Zugang zu all den fantastischen Kräften des "Blue Beetle" gewährt, die Jaime von nun an vor den gierigen Gelüsten Victorias beschützen muss. Und da die absolut keine Skrupel kennt, schreckt sie auch nicht davor zurück, Familie Reyes als Druckmittel einzusetzen - mit fatalen Folgen.

Obwohl "Blue Beetle" auch schon seit 1939 sein Unwesen treibt, war ihm ein standesgemäßer Auftritt in filmischer Variante bisher verwehrt geblieben. Im Zuge des Ausbaus des DC-Filmuniversums bekam er zwar endlich seine Chance, aber dank der anstehenden Umstrukturierungen ist es leider unsicher, ob und wie wir diesen Helden noch einmal wieder erleben. Das ändert aber nichts daran, dass dieser Film ein weiterer Beleg dafür ist, dass DC aktuell die unverbrauchteren Rezepte auf Lager hat - auch wenn sie eben finanziell leider nicht fruchten. Für Marvel-Jünger müsste man "Blue Beetle" wohl als eine Mischung aus Spider-Man, Ant-Man und einer Prise Iron Man beschreiben, denn unweigerlich fühlt man sich an diese Genre-Vertreter erinnert, so dass man fast von einer dezenten Kopie sprechen könnte. Fast! Denn hier greift man tief in die Latino-Experimentierkiste und zieht mit der eigentlich dritten Inkarnation des Helden (auch auf die zweite in Gestalt von Ted Kord wird eingegangen) eine frische Interpretation des Stoffes aus dem Zauberhut. Eingebettet in eine warmherzige Familienatmosphäre wird Jaime Reyes in die Ereignisse geworfen, wird ein Held wider Willen und muss sich schließlich seiner Haut erwehren, ohne, wie er es der Eigenintelligenz des Skarabäus eindringlich erklärt, zum Mörder zu werden. An zusätzlicher "Frische" gewinnt das ganze Projekt dadurch, dass man die Schauspieler größtenteils nicht aus irgendwelchen AAA-Produktionen kennt. Xolo Maridueña spielt zwar die Hauptrolle in der erfolgreichen Serie "Cobra Kai", aber um den Rest des Ensembles zu kennen, muss man sich wohl für entsprechende lateinamerikanische Filme interessieren. Ok, Susan Sarandon ist auch dabei, aber legt jetzt nicht unbedingt eine absolute Glanzperformance hin - zu hysterisch, zu nervig...nein, da gab es schon bessere Bösewichte.

Zur Technik der Scheibe: Zunächst gibt es Entwarnung bezüglich der Spezialeffekte, denn die sehen viel besser aus, als z.B. im Quasi-DC-Vorgänger "The Flash". Die Farben sind südamerikanisch-intensiv, die Schwarzwerte sind ebenfalls prima und der Detailgrad lässt keine Wünsche offen. Heimlicher Star ist mal wieder der deutsche Ton in Dolby Atmos und Dolby TrueHD 7.1, der satt aus den Lautsprechern tönt, gut abgemischt ist, den Subwoofer hier und da ins Spiel bringt und auch räumlich die eine oder andere Sache parat hat. Lasse ich es mir nehmen, hier darauf hinzuweisen, dass die Disney-Dolby-Digital-Plus-Formatseuche das nicht im Ansatz hinbekommt und damit "Star Wars", "Marvel" und sicher auch noch einige andere Franchises in ihrer atmosphärischen Wirkung beschnitten werden? Nö! Lob an Warner Bros, die spendieren selbst einem im Kino mäßig erfolgreichen Film eine richtig gute Tonkulisse für die Heimveröffentlichung. So geht das und nicht anders!
Ach ja, Extras gibt es ja auch noch: Ganz viele Einblicke in die Entstehung und Konzeption des Filmes, auch die Schauspieler melden sich bezüglich ihrer Figuren zu Wort und natürlich erfahren wir ein paar "Basic Infos" über "Blue Beetle" in seiner Comicform. Entfernte Szenen oder eine Gag-Reel sucht man aber leider vergeblich.

Ein überraschend solider DC-Comicfilm, der zwar nicht die Epik von "The Flash" aufbieten kann, aber dafür Familienwerte und das bekannte "Aus großer Macht folgt..."-Thema in den Mittelpunkt rückt. Sympathische Schauspieler und eine sehr ordentliche technische Gestaltung seitens WB unterstützen diesen richtig positiven Eindruck eines Films, der bei den meisten wohl weit, weit unter dem Kinoradar flog.
