“Wisdom from one of the greatest spiritual masters of our time.”—James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage
The heart of Anthony de Mello's bestselling spiritual message is awareness. Mixing Christian spirituality, Buddhist parables, Hindu breathing exercises, and psychological insight, de Mello's words of hope come together in Awareness in a grand synthesis.
In short chapters for reading in quiet moments at home or at the office, he cajoles and challenges: We must leave this go-go-go world of illusion and become aware. And this only happens, he insists, by becoming alive to the needs and potential of others, whether at home or in the workplace.
Here, then, is a masterful book of the spirit, challenging us to wake up in every aspect of our lives.

Spirituality means waking up. Most people, even though they don't know it, are asleep. They're born asleep, they live asleep, they marry in their sleep, they breed children in their sleep, they die in their sleep without ever waking up. They never understand the loveliness and the beauty of this thing that we call human existence. You know, all mystics—Catholic, Christian, non-Christian, no matter what their theology, no matter what their religion—are unanimous on one thing: that all is well, all is well. Though everything is a mess, all is well. Strange paradox, to be sure. But, tragically, most people never get to see that all is well because they are asleep. They are having a nightmare.
Last year on Spanish television I heard a story about this gentleman who knocks on his son's door. "Jaime," he says, "wake up!" Jaime answers, "I don't want to get up, Papa." The father shouts, "Get up, you have to go to school." Jaime says, "I don't want to go to school. "Why not?" asks the father. "Three reasons," says Jaime. "First, because it's so dull; second, the kids tease me; and third, I hate school." And the father says, "Well, I am going to give you three reasons why you must go to school. First, because it's your duty; second, because you are forty-five years old, and third, because you are the headmaster." Wake up, wake up! You've grown up. You're too big to be asleep. Wake up! Stop playing with your toys.
Most people tell you they want to get out of kindergarten, but don't believe them. Don't believe them! All they want you to do is to mend their broken toys. "Give me back my wife. Give me back my job. Give me back my money. Give me back my reputation, my success." This is what they want; they want their toys replaced. That's all. Even the best psychologists will tell you that, that people don't really want to be cured. What they want is relief; a cure is painful.
Waking up is unpleasant, you know. You are nice and comfortable in bed. It's irritating to be woken up. That's the reason the wise guru will not attempt to wake people up. I hope I'm going to be wise here and make no attempt whatsoever to wake you up if you are asleep. It is really none of my business, even though I say to you at times, "Wake up!" My business is to do my thing, to dance my dance. If you profit from it, fine; if you don't, too bad! As the Arabs say, "The nature of rain is the same, but it makes thorns grow in the marshes and flowers in the gardens."

Decide for Yourself! Reading of Awareness Book!

About the author
ANTHONY DE MELLO was a Jesuit priest born in Bombay, India in 1931. He is widely known for his ground-breaking and enduring work that integrates western and eastern spirituality. De Mello is the author of the bestselling masterpiece, Awareness, along with 11 other books that have been translated into 21 languages and have sold more than 2 million worldwide.
De Mello’s most recent book, Stop Fixing Yourself / Wake Up! All is Well centers on his core assertion that you and I are OK exactly as we are. We are not a problem to be solved, nor is there anything we need to fix in ourselves. It is enough for us to simply be watchful and awake. By simply being aware, all that seems false and neurotic in us will drop, and our eyes will open to the reality of joy surrounding us.
His body of work continues to have impact beyond his untimely death in 1987, influencing acclaimed spiritual teachers such as Rhonda Byrne, Eckhart Tolle, Neil Strauss, Adyashanti, Thomas Moore, and Paulo Coelho.

It’s one thing to sit and read and resonate with the words on a page. It’s another thing to have those words move through your heart with surgical precision to help you unpack what is preventing you from truly living. This book provides wisdom which, if considered and applied, Will resurrect in you the remembrance of what living as a human is meant to be. For me it has Of how truly simple life can be… How happy life can be… Simply with awareness.
Whatever you are doing in life, do it well. If you are sweeping the street, be the best street sweeper in the world. If you are walking down the hall of your house walk it as the best hall walker in the world, when you breath, breath as the best breather in the world. Stay connected to your source.
(recent Julia Roberts movie) - "Smile with your mouth, smile with your whole body, even smile with your liver."
Love your self first. Then when Love given to you by the Universe overflows your cup, let it flow out to others and it will be unconditional as you are not in "need" of anything at all. It's when we give all that we have to others first that we become depleted and unfulfilled, and thus have to be conditional with our giving as we try to allocate our limited energies and Love to give to those around us, as we are in a state of "need" ourselves. Love yourself and let yourself become filled with Love first, only then can the Love that flows from you be with out selfish need, unconditional and true.

2 years later, I picked up the book again and everything he was saying made total sense.
His words can be a bit cynical or frustrating at times, but this is with reason. Learning to become more aware, is a process that will uncover ideas I was uncomfortable reading or listening to. But that is the path. What is bothering me, has a hold over me and by being aware of the hold, I let it go. That is part of awareness.
And through De Mello's teachings I learned to uncover them in different areas of life. My relationship with myself (I and me), with others and with nature. There are many teachings I picked up and explored daily and now have given me a clearer view of my approach to life.
For example the idea of viewing desires as preferences. Preferences can be disconnected from one's identity (I) and do not cause the suffering a desire causes. But then you work on becoming more aware of what creates a sense of desire and how it affects your mindset.
There are great lessons in this book and his later book Wellsprings, has beautiful practices.
