Product Description
The gripping conclusion to the Mysterious series marks the 20th anniversary for the Atelier franchise, following the tale of the alchemist twins - the reserved but caring Lydie Marlen, and the eccentric and carefree Suelle Marlen. The young twins work alongside their father at the family atelier, but due to his inexperience in alchemy they rarely see any customers. While working hard to hone their skills, the duo uncovers a mysterious-looking painting, and as they reach out to investigate the girls are drawn inside a world bountiful with rare materials perfect for Alchemy! This fateful discovery is just the beginning of the twin's adventure leading them to their joint goal to run the best atelier in the country.

It is much less breakable than previous games (no easy money loop, materials to make and upgrade weapons are separate so it's harder to dump all the game-breaking stats on every piece of gear). The time limits are also very few and reasonable, so you're free to experiment with tons of synthesizing and exploring.
The mini-game in applying materials on the grid has gotten more interesting. I can spend 15+ minutes trying to max out the effects on an item, and the interface makes it easy to change the board/materials after you select them all, so you don't have to cancel out and remember your choices every time you need to make a structural change to your grid.
I enjoy the two protagonists a lot. They are sooo cute, and other than a few ugh plot moments, they really take a reasonable and proactive approach to most problems. "Man, those other two people just need to be honest with each other and express themselves/communicate more clearly. Let's go make them do that." And they do. Yeay!
The other alchemists/characters that join from previous games play a large role in your party and in the plot. It really feels like you all work together to solve issues. The game is super positive and supportive: all the older characters in the game look after, take care of, and are invested in helping the protagonists grow to their full potential.
What I liked:
The alchemy is always fun and the alchemy system is improved
The combat is fun
There's no time limit on the main story
The graphics are excellent
The painting landscapes are beautiful especially Heavenly Flower Garden
You can switch between Lydie and Sulle
New characters and previous characters return. Sophie and Firis play big roles
Nice and cute character designs
The story is sweet but a bit more serious than Atelier Firis
What I didn't like:
No English voices. I didn't know that when I bought this so that ruined the game for me right from the start and made it feel like the game was incomplete.
The alchemy is fun and unlocking recipe ideas is too but it can be hard unlocking recipe ideas and I still miss buying recipe books like in previous games.
No shortcuts. I wish there had been some shortcuts in the paintings because it got tiring and annoying when you were in a painting but then had to return to the atelier to solve a problem and then when you return to the painting you had to start from the beginning.
The combat is fun but like in previous games it can be difficult if you're not at the right level or have the right gear and items.
I liked Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Painting. It's a nice conclusion to the Mysterious series and it answers the questions from Atelier Sophie and Atelier Firis. Lydie and Suelle were cute, fun and it was a nice change having two alchemists (like in Atelier Escha & Logy) as the main characters but also in being able to switch between them and not stuck choosing and playing just one. I just wish this game had been in English. That was the biggest disappointment of the game.
I give this 4 stars
Atelier Lydie & Suelle has excellent graphics, fun crafting and alchemy, memorable characters with depth, and good turn based combat. This game is addictive in all the best ways and truly scratches that JRPG itch. Despite being full of young, teenage anime girls, this game doesn't fall into the fan service trap at all and every character conducts themselves with dignity. A truly refreshing take on the classic turn based JRPG genre. If you like crafting and RPGs you owe it to yourself to try it out. I love this game!!
