Unlike AC 3, exploration in AC 4 is loads of fun. It doesn't feel like work. Every street of Havana is full of color and life, and sunshine (nice in the winter here by Puget Sound; also, nice in the summer when it rains everyday). I found myself wandering the streets, staring at people, and climbing buildings just for fun -- I even have been doing side quests -- it's what it felt like to be in AC 2, where it is a joy to experience the world they have created. I just rushed through AC 3, and I hated exploration... it always felt like work. Caribbean islands and seas are nothing short of remarkable on the xbox one.
Controls feel smooth and familiar, offering you more choices in combat (like in the Ezio trilogy, but unlike AC 3... see a theme yet?), buying stuff matters again, and I find myself excited about an AC game for the first time since Ezio. Honestly, I may end up liking this game even more than the Ezio trilogy. Big words, I know, but this game really takes the Xbox One out for a spin. Gorgeous, simply unbelievable setting and graphics.
After BF 4 I thought I was impressed by the Xbox One, but it is AC 4 that has really made me excited about the next generation of gaming and glad I invested the money to buy it. This is the first game that I don't feel bad in the slightest paying $60 since Skyrim. Even BF 3+4 and COD require expensive season passes to get the full value of the game... AC 4 on Xbox One is the best value for the money of any game out there.
--- EDIT 11/17/14 ---
Well, about a year has passed. I don't usually update my reviews, but because this review is listed on the home page and seems to get a lot of viewing, I wanted to do my civic duty and update it.
First, I still haven't beat it. I constantly got caught up in the side stories and never did finish the main story. Part of that is because, well, the main story just isn't all that amazing, and it really doesn't fit with open world very well. You either do side stuff or the main story. I guess that's par for the course, but truly compelling writing would not allow that.
You get bored of most games eventually, so it isn't fair to criticize the game for that, really it is the total hours spent before getting bored that matters, as well as the sense of satisfaction at "beating" a game -- which never happened (obviously). In the end I got distracted by newer games. Watch Dogs, for instance, had much more staying power -- I did get bored, but only after beating it and loving it.
Bottom line? I guess I feel like this game is gorgeous, a wonderful early game for Xbox One, but not truly compelling. I never did learn to care all that much for the characters, though they were fun, and I never really learned to care about the story. Storming bases and capturing ships was really fun, but got old -- which is allowed, you won't enjoy anything forever -- but the story falling flat is much harder to forgive.
At the current price, though, this game is a wonderful bargain. I don't regret buying it at all, and I stand behind my original review. I got to beat it now so I can play the next installment (which sounds pretty broken right now).
On a side note -- Battlefield 4 turned out to flop -- that seems worth pointing out as I reference that in my review. Titanfall was the winning shooter of Xbox Year 1 for me. Feel free to pour on the hate. :)
---Graphics---
The graphics are outstanding...not quite next gen - if compared to RYSE - but still outstanding...they're pretty darn good on the 360, but the X1 version really takes it up a notch - this is really noticeable in scenes such as swimming - the depth of the water literally goes from a depth of a few feet (360) to 20 feet deep, thanks to the lighting additions afforded by the X1 - simply beautiful. Foliage is more realistic - again, it's a combination of lighting and overall detail - and you do spend a lot of time in and around foliage - from hunting, to sneaking...
Ironically, the same improvement in graphic detail and lighting can make some things look markedly worse - in certain scenes peoples faces, hay stacks, and a few other things are more cartoon like and IMHO, looked better without the added detail...
---Storyline---
I thought there was no way I was going to enjoy being a pirate...or sailing a ship around 'the world'...especially when sailing a ship was fairly arduous in AC3...but in AC4, it is absolutely a blast - as one reviewer wrote - 'this maybe the best pirate game ever produced!' - and I have to agree...it was just flat out fun taking the crew around the world, fighting with other ships...boarding them, and adding them to my fleet...
IMHO, If you're going through the effort to take on a ship and win, you might as well 'add them to your fleet' - this way, you can either upgrade your fleet (same ship more speed, more firepower), or scuttle them...at least at that point, you'll get the choice...vs immediatly scuttling or repairing your ship...it's pretty cheap just to repair your ship at many fast travel points, should you need to...
The modern day part is an interesting departure from past AC's...overall, I liked the idea of it and what it offers to the AC story...and I'll just leave it at that...(no spoilers here!)...
---Looting---
As with other AC games, there's bounty to be had...you'll have chests on land and out to sea, in addition to warehouses to loot...
As with anything else in this 'world' you can get this loot in and out of the main story line...chests can be looted once, but warehouses can be looted more than once...check your map...if you find a warehouse that 'is full', just fast travel to that town and loot it...to me these are really fun missions...you have to take a key off someone, and loot the warehouse without the bell being sounded - conversely, you can just incapacitate everyone on the plantation and loot the warehouse - personally, I like looting the warehouses undetected...
Also, there are treasure maps to be found...and chests to be looted once you get the maps...and the game did a great job of letting you know, if you were in a location that was on a treasure map (if you have discovered the map)....
---Diving---
Underwater diving, via a bell - this was cool. The underwater graphics were amazing! Tho, I found the swimming ability to be a bit waning...which really came into play when the sharks were around...but still a cool addition...
---Hunting---
As in previous AC's, you're going to be doing some hunting...on land and on the sea. I found the harpooning side of the hunt to be fun (your going to want to upgrade your harpoons, harpoon storage, and rowboat)...again, the graphics are great, game play is smooth, and it's well thought out...and at least the authors saved the turtles...not the monkeys tho (they're just eating berries minding they're own business..why kill them?...just saying...lol...)
---Synchronizing---
Climbing to sync points was really, really smooth in AC4...(and they fixed that 'glitch' in AC3s towers where you'd climb all the way to the top only to find out you're on the wrong side of the tower to be able to pull yourself up and sync....nice!)
---Sweet Moves---
One of my favorite moves in AC3 was the horse assassination - jumping from a galloping horse, right into an assassination...in AC4, they've given you a similar move...while boarding a ship, you can swing on a rope from your ship and go right into an assassination on the other ship...sweet!
---Summary---
I had a blast playing AC4, and IMHO, it is a must buy for anyone who owns an X1...gameplay is really smooth, storyline is well thought out, and the graphics are great!

I am a big fan of first person shootout games, it give bit different experience while playing this game. Mission are almost similar to each other.
