Sonic: Frontiers takes a daring leap beyond the boundaries of traditional gameplay associated with the blue blur, introducing an open-world experience that diverges from Sonic's linear roots. As an avid fan of the franchise, I approached this departure with a mixture of anticipation and skepticism. Yet, to my delightful surprise, Frontiers manages to exceed expectations, delivering a captivating adventure that not only rejuvenates the series but also captures the essence of what makes Sonic truly iconic.

One of the standout features of Sonic: Frontiers is its expansive open world. With breathtaking visuals and meticulous attention to detail, the game presents a multitude of diverse environments that are both visually stunning and thematically distinct. From the verdant landscapes of Green Hill Zone to the futuristic allure of Chemical Plant Zone, each locale beckons exploration. The open-world format grants players a sense of freedom and discovery, allowing them to uncover hidden areas, secrets, and engaging side quests that enrich the gameplay experience.

Frontiers strikes an exquisite balance between Sonic's signature speed and the demand for exploration. While speed remains a core element, the game introduces platforming and puzzle-solving mechanics, effectively utilizing Sonic's abilities to navigate the open world. Whether it's wall-running, vine-swinging, or employing the Spin Dash to surmount obstacles, the gameplay mechanics seamlessly merge with the new structure, resulting in a gratifying and immersive experience.

The narrative woven throughout Frontiers is surprisingly well-crafted, propelling Sonic on an epic journey to save the world from an emerging threat. The story unfolds gradually, presenting captivating plot twists and introducing a memorable cast of characters, including beloved fan favorites as well as fresh faces. The dialogue is witty and engaging, injecting just the right amount of humor and charm that fans have come to expect from Sonic games.

Visually, Frontiers is a spectacle to behold. The character designs remain faithful to their iconic appearances, while the animations are fluid and dynamic. The soundtrack deserves special mention, as it expertly combines reimagined classic tunes with new compositions that effortlessly capture the energetic spirit of Sonic's world. Each zone boasts its own unique musical theme, further enhancing the immersion and overall enjoyment.

While Sonic: Frontiers courageously diverges from the series' linear roots, it manages to preserve the core essence that has endeared Sonic to fans for decades. The open-world format breathes new life into the franchise, offering a fresh perspective on the beloved blue hedgehog while still delivering the high-speed thrills fans crave. It is a testament to the developers' skill and creativity that they successfully navigate this departure, crafting an experience that seamlessly blends Sonic's rich history with this bold new direction.

Overall, Sonic: Frontiers is a remarkable surprise and an essential addition to the libraries of both longtime fans and newcomers alike. By skillfully combining the best elements of an open-world adventure with Sonic's trademark speed and charm, the game captures the spirit that makes the blue blur an enduring icon. It is a thrilling journey from start to finish, showcasing Sonic's ability to break new ground while staying true to his roots.

Firstly I'm reviewing this based on the deal £15-£20 I spent on the game - not the full retail price.

At first I found this game such a treat (I am a sonic fan since the first game), this is imo the best 3D sonic game thus far.
After the free updates this game has been flushed put more and even more of a treat and repayable.

Pros:
- Vast expanse to run and explore. Various islands are pretty and have a good feel.
- Sonic's movement is precise in the most part. Even at fast speeds I found him easy to control and a joy when going really fast!
- Decent stages inside the world, the "Cyberspace" levels are mostly fun and don't suffer from speed glitches I find with other 3D Sonic games.
- Story is cool, not much beyond the typical sonic story but adds to whatever stories you may or may not already know.

Cons:
-A couple of the cyberspace levels can be quite frustrating
-Besides the frustration on a couple of the levels, they seem quite easy (I platinumed the game with some ease). Though I didn't find any of the levels boring.
-The open world areas are nice and well designed for the most part but sometimes feel a little bare (mainly after you have maxed out Sonic and his abilities) and a lot of the level feels unnecessary.
-On the subject of maxing out Sonic and his abilities, u found with lots of exploring in-between the 'missions' I maxed out Sonic with ease and for almost half the game I was still collecting worthless goodies that you usually use to upgrade Sonic - I think they may or may not fix this issue with an update by adding other characters or abilities for use all the collected stuff.

To summarise I found this game decent especially for the price I paid. I loved it as a Sonic game but hope the next release will be a much more flushed out version of this (which may almost be what the free updates offer).

Great for kids and adults alike :)
