I guess it's easy when we are younger.
To a degree anyway; given how easy it is to fall in love, how easy it is to fall out of.
To miss opportunities or to regret things we said or things we failed to.

Whether an admission or a confession, it stands bold.

This book tends to highlight a lot of the "what to not do's" when it comes to love, lust and the like.
But the truth is if you stand back and look at the characters you see something grander. Something less malicious in the intents of all involved. It becomes less about "what not to do" and more about "what else can we do?".

The book ends up on a question, not on what is right nor what is wrong.
But on where does the line get drawn?

And it turns out for the characters involved, the line is blurry, fuzzy, insignificant.
Almost non-existent.

A man wanting.
A woman craving both lives.
Another man trying to do his best work regardless of the sacrifice.

It was the song from Ben Howard that brought me to this song. (The song; End of The Affair, aptly titled).

A song so strong and powerful could only come from something equally as so and this book did not disappoint. It was hard to read at times, not from a literary point of view but from an emotion aspect.
You can see train wrecks approaching, but you'll be left disappointed if you believe anyone can stop them.

This book does a good job of keeping you hoping, and that's the limit as to what I'll say with regards to plot line. What I will say is; at 32 years old (When I originally read the book) I did enjoy the topic, the substance and the feeling behind it.

It's also a story about how regardless if whether you can stop the train wreck.
Sometimes, good can come from the wreck itself.
Catastrophe can result in something new being born.

I'd also recommend Ben Howards song, beautifully written and the live version is incredible.

The End of the Affair isn't the usual type of book I would pick up, but after agreeing a 'book swap' with my friend, I approached it with an open mind. I've often heard of Graham Greene, but again found his work too archaic for my own tastes.

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by this novel; it grabbed my mind and had me thinking of its wonderful and insightful prose. Greene created a complex and interesting protagonist isn't perfect, nor claims to be. He suffers very much from the human condition - an over-analyser of every situation who lets his head get the better of him sometimes. A natural hypocrite as well as a passionate lover.

I found the religious questioning extremely engaging - equal measure of argument as well realistic opinions formulated in such a way that it rings true even in today's society.

Sarah, the woman of Bendrix's affair is perhaps a let down. I found her annoying, but I suspect that may have something to do with the time in which the novel was written and set. We are a long way away from the 1950's today. But in saying that, I found the shift in narrative during the middle of the refreshing - where we get to see her diary entries.

I have to admit, I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another Graham Greene novel in the future.

This is meant to be a love story but it is as much about love as a stick of celery. Yes, it opens well, and I was gripped in the first 50 pages wanting to know how the affair was going to end, but then we get her diary and it goes on and on and on about God and whether she loves God more than she loves him. Even when it gets back to our hero, the story-line is tedious and repetitive - their walks across the common and to and from the cinema or the restaurant or to visit the funny atheist, and pages of mental battles with God. We are given Parki (very unfortunate name) I presume to add some variety because it is not clear what he had to do with any of it once the detective work is called off. For me it he was just another tedious distraction. The most cold, clinical love story I've ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get the CD ... Colin Firth is worth it.

I have this on CD. What's not to love. Colin Firth purring in your ear as your chug along the highway with marvelous words from Graham Greene. English is such a beautiful language when it is well written and the spoken by Colin. ... plus it's a bit of a thriller (l944 style).
