Neverwhere: A BBC Radio Full-Cast Dramatisation Audible Audiobook – Original recording

Beneath the streets of London there is another London. A subterranean labyrinth of sewers and abandoned tube stations. A somewhere that is Neverwhere.... An act of kindness sees Richard Mayhew catapulted from his ordinary life into the strange world of London Below. There he meets the Earl of Earl's Court, faces a life-threatening ordeal at the hands of the Black Friars, comes face to face with the Great Beast of London, and encounters an Angel. Called Islington. Accompanied by the mysterious Door and her companions, the Marquis de Carabas and the bodyguard Hunter, Richard embarks on an extraordinary quest to escape from the fiendish assassins Croup and Vandemar and to discover who ordered them to murder her family - all the while trying to get back to his old life in London Above. Adapted for radio by the award-winning Dirk Maggs, this captivating dramatisation features a stellar cast including David Harewood, Sophie Okonedo, Benedict Cumberbatch, Christopher Lee, Anthony Head and David Schofield. Contains over 25 minutes of additional unbroadcast material, including extended scenes, bloopers and outtakes.

This review relates to the BBC Radio 4 audiobook production. The treatment of the material is utterly sublime and independently justifies the licence fee for a decade. The relish with which the cast have thrown themselves into the piece is evident and the power of radio, spoken word - if you prefer, to facilitate the imagination has rarely been equalled. If you have medium to long car journey coming up, then this is the book for you.

Another imaginative story from Neil Gaiman, very good choice of voices and good production including proper use of stereo - have a listen on a decent hi-fi. You don't need pictures

I first saw the BBC One production of Neil Gaiman's "Neverwhere" on A&E. This story proved to me once again that for my money, the best storytellers in the world tend to be British. I know surprisingly little of Neil Gaiman's writing but what I have read is fantastic. This radio-play is definitely all Neil Gaiman and is mostly faithful to the original miniseries. In some ways, especially casting, it exceeds the original. This cast includes the incredible Jamie Bell as Richard Mayhew and the ever-popular Anthony Head as the villainous Mr. Croup. The one character who is conspicuously missing from the story is Serpentine. Though she is as intriguing as any of Gaiman's creations, she was mysterious and somewhat under-utilized so her absence is noticeable but not worth obsessing about. The story works just fine without her.
Suffice it to say that this is another BBC Radio production which belongs on the same pedestal as the original "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy".

I got this dramatisation along with my sanitiser to make the order over £10, this meant I could have a product instead of using money for postage !! I was toying between 2 audios this one was fantasial (I think you have to be that way inclined -:) the other was a comedy. I wondered if i might have been better with the comedy this is ok if you know the author i took a risk it was alright as a dramatisation but if narrated I think I would have found a child or something I might still yet. Cast wise and effort for a programme recorded with whomever they put it over you know. Neverwhere is wriiten by the author and song writer Neil Gaiman. It is a bit dark I have to say for me, so now that im this far in feedback I think I might find someone for it.

Was unsure before purchasing but decided to take a gamble. I’m certainly glad that I did. With an all star cast and fantastic story line, it really didn’t disappoint. It certainly made my long commutes much more enjoyable and re-playing them, I’m noticing things I missed previously. Would highly recommend purchasing.

I sat and listened to this in one go - what a fantastic version of the story. From James McAvoy to Christopher Lee to the late, greatly missed Bernard Cribbins.... each and every member of the cast was perfect.

Utterly fabulous. Until I listened to this on Radio 4, I had no idea what the fuss about Gaiman was. Now I am converted. That said, I really prefer to listen to his work, rather than read it in print. His books are zany and to me, really benefit from the input of a great narrator or cast, like this one, to give it the edge.

Cannot recommend enough, it's over a year since I listened to it and it is still firmly with me.

Never read the book before, got copy because other very positive comments about it. I thought it is about 'underground' gang stuff but in fact involving magic, which is a good surprise for me. I love it very much.

It is great fun to listen, both the performances and the story itself. I have listened to it couple of times now, still not yet get bored;D

If this story has sequel, wish the same cast can do the Radio Drama of that one too.

This is my first radio drama purchase and I'm super pleased with it. Everything is well acted and just lovely to listen to. My first listen through was over a few periods in bed with the lights out. Really enjoyed it. It comes on 4 discs, about an hour-ish each. And next time I do a long drive it will definetly be coming with me. I plan on picking up a few more like this.

This audiobook is definitely something. If you know the book, you really can't help but notice how much work has been put into this. I think, for a book that has hardly any dialogue, this audiobook is the best possible adaption. I had read most of the book already when I listened to this first (and when I couldn't listen, continued to read feverishly to catch up), together with someone who had not read the book. Apparently, you understand 98% of the story even if you don't know the book, a plus that not every audiobook can claim! And holy moly, I am so glad that I got to the biggest plot twist through the audiobook instead of the real book, because it is sooo much better in that adaption! I nearly freaked out in my car, honestly.
If you see the cast list, you know exactly what is waiting for you: many of those are known as great actors, and they don't do things by halves. James McAvoy and Natalie Dormer are absolutely spectacular as the main characters, I loved the personality they gave to the characters (I found them a little difficult to bond with in the book, but you just HAVE to love them here). Sir Christopher Lee is just wonderful as The Earl, funny, but awe-inspiring (sometimes I had to rewind because I was so mesmerized by his voice that I forgot to actually process what he was saying). And Benedict Cumberbatch is just his usual brilliant self as the angel Islington, otherworldly, hypnotising, and honestly, the range of things he does with his voice in this audiobook is incredible. It makes you shudder, really, in a good way. David Harewood as the marquis de Carabas makes the character a lot more likeable and that enriches the story a lot, he's really fun to listen to. Sophie Okonedo as Hunter does a good job as well, although her character doesn't leave much space for anything but her serious side. And Anthony Head and David Schofield as Mr Croup and Mr Vandemar make you like those bastards a lot more than you should, their performance is absolutely to the point, entertaining, and simply perfect.
The sound effects are great, timing and everything, and you know exactly what is going on, even though you can't see. Your imagination will do everything for you, and you can see it all in your head. In its own way, it is better than a film.

All in all, I have to say, the book alone would probably not have been one of my favourites, and the audiobook alone would not have offered me as an avid reader enough depth. But the two combined are a marvellous, wonderful, gripping experience, a perfect symbiosis. This audiobook brings the story to life, there is nothing more to want.

I am an over the road trucker and I love Neil Gaiman books. I saw this was a full production and just had to get it. Driving through the plains and into the Rockies I was enthralled in the story. I had my suspicions but every time I thought I knew where the story was going it would make a hard right turn.

I loved the cast and the production value the BBC puts into these audiobooks. I want it to be made into a movie with the exact same cast playing their own parts.
