A Co-op, platforming, puzzle-solving masterpiece!

A Co-op, platforming, puzzle-solving masterpiece!
My wife and I played A Way Out during the pandemic in 2020, and we absolutely loved it. So when Hazelight announced It Takes Two, we were really excited for another co-op adventure. Hazelight could have easily created another gritty, crime drama, but they decided to go in a completely different direction and surprise us with a fantastical romantic-comedy about a couple trying to repair their marriage. On paper, that may not seem like a very compelling premise for a video game, but under the confident and creative direction of Josef Fares, the team at Hazelight have created an engaging, interactive masterpiece. In terms of gameplay, It Takes Two has the heart and soul of a Toy Story movie, the platforming and gadgets of Ratchet and Clank, the mind-bending puzzles of Portal 2, and the stressful boss fights of Cuphead. This game has something for everyone, and the number of different and inventive game mechanics is staggering. After a while, I lost count and thought, “They can’t possibly introduce something new again.” But they do! And they do so exceptionally well!Without trying to spoil too much, here are several of my favorite moments and mechanics:Cody’s sap gun and May’s match gunCody’s nail throwing and May’s hammerheadThe magnet mechanic in the middle of a snow stormMay fighting a squirrel on top of a plane, Street Fighter styleMay stealthing past sleeping moles using Cody’s grass mechanic (who knew moles could be so tense and terrifying?)Cody’s size-changing mechanic and May’s gravity bootsRiding on top of a giant translucent catfish dragonThe elephant scene (you’ll know it when you get there)Cody’s cactus modeCody’s flower / leaf growing mechanicMay’s singing! If you love puzzles like Portal, Limbo, or Shadow of the Colossus, you’ll love the puzzles here. It Takes Two does a fantastic job of introducing a new mechanic and then forcing you to use them in ways you never thought of. Once the light-bulb goes off, it’s immensely gratifying! My only complaint (and it’s a really minor one) is that the game doesn’t have a final boss. After enduring one hectic boss fight after another, I expected the ending to conclude with one. Nevertheless, the game is still amazing with plenty of minigames to find after the story mode. It’s hard for me to think of how Hazelight can possibly top It Takes Two. They’re quickly becoming one of my favorite game developers, and I’ll be looking forward to their next game when it comes out.

Playing "It Takes Two" on the PS4 with my 7-year-old has been an extraordinary experience that has brought us closer in more ways than I could have imagined. This game is a masterpiece of cooperative gameplay, blending ingenious puzzles, captivating storytelling, and beautifully designed worlds into a package that has provided us with over 25 hours of joy and we're still eagerly working our way through it.

What sets "It Takes Two" apart is its unique approach to cooperative play. The game requires two players to work together in real-time to solve puzzles and navigate through various challenges, making it an excellent game for parents and children to play together. The puzzles are thoughtfully designed to encourage communication and teamwork, which has been a fantastic way to strengthen our bond and enjoy our time together.

The story of "It Takes Two" is both engaging and touching, centered around the theme of relationships and cooperation. Playing through the story with my child has opened up opportunities for meaningful discussions about teamwork, problem-solving, and the importance of understanding different perspectives. The narrative is presented in a way that's accessible and entertaining for both kids and adults, making it a delightful experience for family members of all ages.

Graphically, the game is a visual treat, with imaginative and varied environments that are a pleasure to explore. Each level introduces new mechanics and challenges, keeping the gameplay fresh and exciting. The creativity displayed in the game's design is truly impressive, captivating the imagination of both my child and myself as we navigate through its whimsical world.

The controls are intuitive and easy to pick up, which is perfect for younger players. My 7-year-old had no trouble getting to grips with the gameplay, and the cooperative nature of "It Takes Two" means that we could easily assist each other in overcoming any particularly tricky sections.

In conclusion, "It Takes Two" is a phenomenal game for families, especially for those looking to share a fun and meaningful gaming experience. It's a rare gem that perfectly balances challenge, fun, and educational value, making every moment spent playing it a memorable one. Whether you're a seasoned gamer or new to video games, this game is sure to provide hours of entertainment and bonding for you and your child. Highly recommended!

Cody’s sap gun and May’s match gun

Cody’s nail throwing and May’s hammerhead

The magnet mechanic in the middle of a snow storm

May fighting a squirrel on top of a plane, Street Fighter style

May stealthing past sleeping moles using Cody’s grass mechanic (who knew moles could be so tense and terrifying?)

Cody’s size-changing mechanic and May’s gravity boots

Riding on top of a giant translucent catfish dragon

The elephant scene (you’ll know it when you get there)

Cody’s cactus mode

Cody’s flower / leaf growing mechanic

May’s singing!

This game has so many cool and very different levels. Puzzles are all unique, with different mechanics, but doable. There are funny cut scenes and interludes where you're just watching the scenery which helps break up the more intense aspects like boss fights. Very easy to pick up and play for several hours without getting bored. Graphically A1. My only wish is that there were more co-op games of this caliber.
