I no longer own a switch, and started off pirating this game, but I enjoyed it so much I decided to do my role in supporting all the involved parties. Normally in this situation I would wait to purchase a PC release but its pretty much confirmed there will never be a PC version of this game.

The story setting is just about as trope-y as it can get, but is done with such attention to detail that despite the tropes it doesn't feel generic. I took my time with side quests and team optimization, and managed to spend 80 hours on my first playthrough on expert difficulty. I have some other games on my list to tackle next but I definitely will be revisiting it for what is effectively the "New Game +" difficulty.

If you happen to be looking for something that scratches the same itch, look into Radiant Historia (DS/3DS) or Symphony of War (PC).

This game is basically a superior version of Ogre Battle 64 where you can dive deeper in the behavior of your units during combat.
Played for almost 100 hours and was sad to see it end.
Story is very generic, but the gameplay more than makes up for it.

Game itself is great, if you want an in-depth review of the game itself, I recommend youtube, otherwise, I'll review the package from Amazon itself. It was fine, on time, no damage, factory new

I picked up this game since I have greatly enjoyed fellow SRPGs like Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Valkyria Chronicles in the past and found it very appealing during the September Nintendo Direct. Overall, Unicorn Overlord is just a hair shy of being an instant classic for the genre like those aforementioned titles but nonetheless is a game I would highly recommend for people who enjoy these games for their gameplay.

Positives:

- Firstly, the artwork is positively gorgeous with most characters really popping off the screen and the various locales visited being quite breathtaking during the cutscenes and zoomed in battles.

- Secondly, this game is surprisingly unique for an SRPG as it is very open ended since the player can choose to do the majority of content in any order they want regardless if it is higher level or off the recommended path. I personally love this since it meant I could set the tempo of my playthrough in a way I never could in Fire Emblem or Valkyria Chronicles as I could decide if I wanted to do main line content to progress the story or side content to bolster my forces and furthermore gave me the freedom to tackle challenges in the way that suited me best (ex. one side quest was fairly annoying for me, so I left it to do some quests in the elf land and easily cleared it with my new forces later on).

- Finally, the gameplay is great as Unicorn combines macro and micro managing in a clever way since it is not turn based like Fire Emblem but rather something akin to the real time with pause systems seen in older RPGs like Planescape Torment. This is really cool because it means that I had to pay attention to what enemy units were doing at all times and dictate my units to counteract them in real time (ex. keeping an eye on my own base throughout the match so I didn't lose at the last second) whereas in most other SRPGs you can play hyper conservative and usually get away with it since enemies/players don't move at the same time. Furthermore, just like many of the best RPGS there is a lot of micro managing regarding how your party is set up which is great since you need to be cognizant of what units pair well together, what skills they bring to the table (ie. the field skills are very useful for softening up units), and who is the leader of said team since that dictates how they move around the battlefield. There is a remarkable level of depth here and it is the main reason to play the game in my opinion.

Negatives:

- The biggest negative this game has is undeniably the writing as it is cliche, dull, and kind of soulless. First up the characters are not great with most of them having neat designs but little in the way of depth or real personalities as they usually only have one notable trait (ie. dutiful, loyal, blood thirsty, simp etc) that is introduced during there initial mission and then they are never expanded upon during the campaign or side conversations. Furthermore, the dialogue is overtly expository with next to no flavour to be found and this just makes everything feel fairly robotic and like Chat GPT wrote it rather than a human being. Finally, the main story is so bog standard that even the 3DS Fire Emblem games and Engage would be unimpressed by the lack of ambition on display since the bad guys have no charisma or depth, you are the unequivocal good boy meant to fix everything, the world feels like a stock Isekai, and there isn't any interesting twists or turns to be found anywhere. Fortunately since the gameplay is high quality this isn't a crippling issue but it still holds the game back slightly since if the story was just decent like Valkyria Chronicles I would consider the game a modern classic in it's genre.

- In terms of smaller negatives I have two. The first one is that the animations while gorgeous can drag down the pace of matches since it can take an absurd amount of time to watch 5 characters on both sides do lavish animations and thus I skipped nearly every animated fight to simply improve the flow of combat which is a bummer since I love watching the animations in these kinds of games. Secondly is that while the depth of gameplay deserves a lot of praise, there is undeniably a lot of information to parse regarding what classes beat which and why certain units might be struggling compared to others which can frustrating occasionally.

This game continues to impress me. Usually my game time is very limited and I have trouble getting through long games. This game keeps me coming back weeks later with the promise of unique and engagement strategy planning, gorgeous graphics, a wonderful musical score, and solid voice acting throughout. I'm a little less than half way through at this point, but it's becoming my favorite game of the year!

Un gran juego de JRPG Estrategia, un apartado artístico de lujo y un montón de personajes e historia, vale demasiado la pena si eres fan del género o si te gustan juegos cómo FireEmblem y Triangle Strategy
