Birmingham man fatally stabbed inside Donaldson Correctional Facility among 3 weekend prison deaths

A Birmingham man was stabbed to death inside William Donaldson Correction Facility over the weekend, one of three inmates to die since Friday at the west Jefferson County prison.

Deandre Roney, 39, was serving a sentence for robbery and attempted murder from a 2008 conviction out of Jefferson County.

According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, Roney sustained a sharp for injury during a reported assault.

The attack happened at 12:53 p.m. Saturday. Roney was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:03 p.m.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said the death is being investigated as a homicide. Efforts to reach Alabama Department of Corrections officials for additional information were not immediately successful.

Two other inmates also died over the weekend, but their deaths did not appear to be the result of foul play, coroner’s officials said.

Hudson Dontavious Swanson, 36, was found unresponsive at 3:50 p.m. Friday in a prison day space, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

He was pronounced dead at 4:07 p.m.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said an autopsy found no sign of trauma or foul play. His cause of death is pending additional laboratory studies.

Swanson was serving a sentence for 2007 robbery and sexual abuse convictions out of Montgomery County.

Walter Maul, 59, was pronounced dead at 9:45 a.m. Sunday in the prison infirmary.

Yates said Maul was found unresponsive in the infirmary where he was being treated for significant natural disease.

Maul was serving a life sentence for first-degree rape for a 1981 conviction out of Jefferson County.
