Greetings. I was delighted when WordPress recently added native WebP support and I am making the most of it. However, I am sadly unable to utilize WebP in a client’s new website that I am currently developing (via WP Engine), [ redundant link removed ]

The above is a multisite per the client’s needs. According to the forum post below, WebP support is not available for multisites created prior to the 5.8 update:

    WordPress 5.8 adds WebP support

I am not a developer, so I don’t entirely understand what solution there might be (if any). Is it possible for me to somehow add to or change the multisite’s data files to allow for WebP use? It would really help me get the weight down for each page, since we’re using a lot of full-screen images.

Thank you very much for any assistance you can offer.

    HI @jjbiztraffic!

Right now, for a multisite to support WebP, it looks like you’ll need a touch of custom code in the form of a mu-plugin. It’s something you could try yourself, if you wanted, but it may be easier to hire a developer to work on it.

Otherwise, work *is* ongoing to make this work for multisites, so it could also work to wait for that work to be released (https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/53167).

Thank you very much for the prompt and informative reply, Tara! I hoped this would be addressed in a future update, so we will be patient until then.
