Hi, I wanted to share something that might have further implications.
I hope I can keep this short and clear for everyone.

I’m the creator of a custom theme (not on the market) called ‘velox’.
There is also an other creator with a theme that has the same name / theme folder.

The style.css inside however is vastly different. Yet the most strange thing I ever encountered happend. Because I had an update pending I hit the update theme link’ After the update was complete my custom theme was replaced with this
    https://wordpress.org/themes/velox/

How is this possible, we share the same folder theme, but not the stylesheet. How can my complete theme be overwritten by this theme?

  • Hi, @melcarthus

The way the update currently goes for themes & plugins, it will check for the slug of your theme (the folder) and then if there is a newer version in the repository it will prompt to update it. There are some proposals to change this in the future, but for now, it’s how it works. Themes (and plugins) should have unique slugs. If you want to keep the folder name, and you don’t care much about numeric version, you could change the theme version to something like 100.1

    Thanks for the repsonse!

I figured as much. I already changed the slug/foldername to something more unique and will keep a strong eye on this in the future when I start new themes.

I’ll gladly join the discussion on /themes If I have anything to offer. Thank you so much for the fast reply.

    Have a nice day!
