Are you talking about installing a localhost onto your machine?
I would suggest MAMP which is a localhost/local server where you’ll be able to install WordPress and work with it as you would a live site.
Here’s some guides on how to do that:
https://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress_Locally_on_Your_Mac_With_MAMP
Rather than MAMP, I recommend Local By Flywheel: https://local.getflywheel.com/
It’s a two click process to install WP, once you’ve downloaded and installed Local.
I don’t use any of those as MAC OS has everything built in and just needs to be activated and configured.

lol! I used to be in that camp. And I used to love VirtualHostX for helping me manage Apache virtual hosts.
But after about four or five OSX updates I started to question the sanity of it because Apple would blow away my development configuration. Every. Single. Time. And then it would take hours to get it reconfigured.
Then I realized how nice it was to be able to have different versions of PHP and MySQL that were not such a PITA to switch, and how much nicer it would be to be able to run the Linux versions of services like Memcached and Redis and I was converted.
Then, several years later we decided to buildone for us as well as other people;. So now we are firmly in the “Virtual Dev Environment FTW!” camp. 🙂

Just another option I would like to throw out there is Valet. Used a lot by Laravel devs but can easily install and run WordPress as well:

@mikeschinkel – funny you say that. I have put off updating my MBP from mountain lion for just that reason. Everything is set up the way I like it –
