    Hi there, I’m currently running older versions of WordPress and Multipage on my review site https://www.cameralabs.com/ , because updating either of them breaks my current format, forcing me to restore a backup. I’m currently using WP 5.4.7 and Multipage 1.3.7 and using shortcodes to create multipage posts with [nextpage title=”page-title”]

    Here is a typical review with four pages: https://www.cameralabs.com/nikon-z-mc-50mm-f2-8-review/

    Note the multi-page navigation below the title and author. I’m using a chevron style graphic for the pages.

    When I update WordPress to 5.8.1, the navigation graphics still appear BUT clicking them just reloads the first page in the post. Hovering over the navigation graphics shows the correct URL with /2 or /3 or /4 after the main address, but even entering these manually just reloads the first page again.

    If I update the Multipage plugin to 1.5.12, the navigation disappears altogether. If I change the plugin settings to show a different format, I can display a table of contents, but again when I click any other page in the post, it just reloads the first page.

    Following the updates, I tried creating a new post using the block editor to create subpages and these work fine, so I’m guessing the problem lies with using shortcode for [nextpage title=”page-title”]. But this worked fine on my older installation which I have now restored using a backup.

    I have tens or even hundreds of posts which have multipage reviews formatted this way, some are block-designed, some are old code from WP 4, but all work fine on WP 5.4.7 and Multipage 1.3.7.

    What do you suggest?

    Many thanks,

    Gordon Laing, Editor, Cameralabs

    Hi,
    with the Gutenberg editor there are now 3 combinations where Multipage should work:
    1) Gutenberg editor (it’s working, right?);
    2) Gutenberg, with the shortcode inside a classic editor block (it’s happening with old posts when you turn to Gutenberg);
    3) Classic editor at all (according to Matt Mullenweg this will be supported until 2022 https://ma.tt/2018/11/a-gutenberg-faq/ ).

    So the develope of Multipage, as WordPress itself, is focusing on Gutenberg that will became the one and only fully supported WordPress editor in a few months.
    This said, I can check the problem you’re reporting, it’s latest WordPress, latest MPP, classic editor, correct?

    I will update you soon.

    P.S. It’s a really nice adoption of Multipage on your website.

    Did a few tests on my nightly build and it works without problems.
    To be honest I don’t remember if my build is different from the latest released version in something that could be represented with a problem like the one you have, I don’t think so, but I can release this version, even if not before I test it with accuracy.

    Hi Sergio, thanks for your quick responses.

    I did some more testing and found that updating the plugin had changed one of my settings, and changing it made the navigation appear again on the page. So my problem seems to now be fixed! I also updated WordPress to the latest version and so far it seems to be working ok.

    Note: All of my posts use shortcodes for the [nextpage title=”page-title”]

    Some were made before Gutenberg, some were made using Gutenberg.

    Will these stop working in the future? I will make sure all new posts use blocks for [nextpage title=”page-title”] but will I need to update all my old posts? There are over 100 of them!

    Thanks again for your support,

    Gordon

    Hi,
    Good to hear you’ve solved.
    The shortcode will continue working in a legacy mode, so no problem with that posts.
