• Hi,
I am brand-new to WordPress. With WordPress 2019, I created my first page this week. But yesterday, I could not save revisions and preview the pages. “updating failure” was the response and “preview” just showed a perpetual rotating “W” symbol. I lost my newly created page after hit the save draft or preview button.

This morning I was happy to find that WordPress is back– I could save draft and preview now. But mysteriously, the editor looks unfamiliar. It must be the Classic Editor. I deactivate the Classic Editor, and activate Gutenberg, then hitting “view” my pages returns a white page to me. So I have to activate the Classic Editor again.

I didn’t do anything. Why Classic Editor came up and why Gutenberg disappeared? With Classic Editor, I can’t set image full width, it seems.

As a new user, this is frustrating. Why I can’t use Gutenberg now?
To update to 5.1.1, I need to key in hostname, FTP account and password, what is my hostname? I use Linode server. I don’t know what it means.

Anyone can help me? Thanks so much!

  • It seems like Gutenberg is failing to load which is why there is a white screen. Have you added any plugins recently that would cause this to break? Anything that has disabled the WordPress API system?

As for the hostname and FTP account info, that means the system can’t write to your files because it doesn’t have permission to do so. Has anything changed since the last time this all worked?
