• Whenever I try to add a link, I have to do it 5 times before it actually works. This time it was the worst.

I was typing a sentence and then went to re-read it to look for the right words to add a link to. Once I found the words, the add a link button failed (once again) and instead added the URL of the page I was trying to link to the top of the page.

I then pressed ctrl+z to undo the URL added at the top of the page, but this instead redid the last 7-8 paragraphs I wrote. This was roughly 600 words in length and at least 30 minutes of constant brainstorming and writing.

PLEASE fix the add a link and undo button.

EDIT: There is no redo button, for some reason.

Which editor did this occur in? Classic Editor or Gutenberg?

Also, dependent on how you were editing and your site, you may have Revision History available where you can restore to a previous version. Have you checked?

Hello, this occurred in Gutenberg. The add a link bug has been happening ever since the Gutenberg update.

There is no recent revision history available. Only ones I made over an hour ago.

I haven’t been able to recreate this behavior in the way I am understanding. Can you detail the process a bit more and provide screenshots or a video/gif of the process? Showing step-by-step ways to recreate this will help find a solution.

Then, if you would like to create a bug report, there’s an overview and guide available at https://make.wordpress.org/core/handbook/testing/reporting-bugs/.

Finally, I did notice an open issue on Gutenberg’s GitHub page but it wasn’t quite what you are detailing here. https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/12790

    Hello.

I am working on uploading the video.

I am working on uploading the video.

    Awesome, thanks!

While reviewing a bit further, I found another report at https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/45678

Does this sound the same as the issue you are experiencing?

    That does sound accurate.

Please check out the video! I apologize for the music, forgot to turn it off.

In short, this bug added the URL I wanted to link to at the top of the page. When I went to CTRl+Z it, it deleted 600 words worth of work.

EDIT: There is also so much scrolling I have to do 🙁

I have not watched the video yet.

But, if you simply copy a URL, then select some text, and hit the paste button, it makes it that link. No need for any form of dialog.

Just a shortcut that I use. Paste URLs straight onto text and turn them into links. Might help you out.

Watched the video. Why are you using a Classic block? Switch to the real editor. Convert that thing into a real block based post.

I know that this works, but it still won’t make a link open in a new tab.

I am not a fan of the real editor.

Why would you want that? Links opening in New tabs is bad for usability. Don’t do that unless you have an extremely good reason.

If you don’t like the block editor, install the Classic Editor plugin. The Classic block is a workaround, not a replacement.

I like to link to external source that add more value to my content. However, because it’s not my content, I don’t want to lose the time on my page, which will happen if I don’t open the link in another tab. Basically, it’s for SEO purposes.

As for the block editor, I like Gutenberg, I’d be fine if this bugged was fixed haha.

If you’re still using the Classic Block, you’re not really using the editor to its full capacity. The link button in normal paragraph blocks supports what you want to do. Try converting a post.

I’ll use it for the next post. Thanks for your input.
