There is indeed no way to create categories for documents within the delivered plugin software. This is as written in the readme file::

Can I tag my documents? What about categories or some other grouping?

Yes. You can use the Simple Taxonomy Refreshed plugin to add taxonomies, or can share your existing taxonomies (e.g., the ones you use for posts) with documents.

It is, however rather hidden as that file is long. It is unlikely that the standard category or post_tags are appropriate to be applied to documents. But it is unlikely that the delivered plugin can reasonably determine how each installation will want to organise its documents and their presentation.

Hence the suggestion that you should install a taxonomy plugin and define the taxonomies wanted ensuring that they apply to the document post type. Whilst I am the author of the one mentioned, and I know that it will allow your requirements to be met, many other ones are available that you may prefer.

But if you do want to use the delivered taxonomies for your documents, this will probably need to be coded, though post counts will be confused as the post counts will just sum the total linked of whatever post type.

    Hope this is of use,

Since there have been no follow-up questions for over a week, I’ll mark this resolved.
