    I recently purchased and installed the official WooCommerce gift cards plug-in and found out that it’s incompatible with Blocks because like so many other plug-ins, it uses webhooks.

    Is there any way to accept gift cards with Blocks? I reeeally don’t want to have to go back to the legacy checkout because the UX is so clunky and outdated (billing address before shipping? “use billing address for shipping” at the _end_ of a step?) that it has a measurable effect on my conversion rate, but I also can’t give up the ability to sell gift cards.

    Is there a timeline/estimate for when Blocks will stop being “experimental” and start working with WooCommerce’s own plugins (or when WooCommerce official plug-ins catch up and stop using webhooks for everything)? Or are there plans to update the regular checkout flow to be more user-friendly and current?

    If not then I need to give up on Blocks (and maybe WooCommerce) because I can’t wait another two years for such basic things as checkouts and gift cards to function properly.

  • Hi there!

    You may be interested in this recent post which includes some info around the plans for the new checkout flow provided by blocks.

    I’ve already read this, thanks. There are no actual timelines in this doc, just vague terms like “Next” and “Later.” The “85-90% coverage of the extensibility needs” listed under the “Now” section also doesn’t link to any concrete information and many of WooCommerce’s own popular extensions don’t appear on either the “compatible” or “incompatible” list. The only thing I can infer from this doc is that WooCommerce has no obvious plans to improve the legacy checkout flow, and no actual timeline for when Blocks will work with common extensions beyond some payment gateways and shipping services. Without an actual timeline, merchants stay in the dark and continue to lose sales for an indefinite period of time, two years and counting.

    Hello @ellovee

    I was given some feedback and learned that the answer I provided earlier was incorrect. Other than what I thought was hopeful information I don’t see anything that will be tying Gift Cards to WooCommerce Blocks. I apologize for any confusion.

    OK, thanks. Abandoning Blocks now and seeing what I can do with legacy checkout to minimize the friction of that flow (which WooCommerce confirms converts 20% less than the newer Checkout Block). I’m super disappointed that these are the choices merchants are forced to make. These have huge effects on our livelihoods and families.

    @ellovee,

    I had the same issue, which was particularly problematic for the upcoming holiday season! Gotta have gift cards!

    So we built our own block to use the WooCommerce Gift Cards plugin to work with the new Checkout Block. Below is a screenshot on our checkout:

    Email me and I’ll send it to you 🙂

    Hopefully you have a staging site to test it on with your other plugins and store settings.

    Thanks, Tobin! I’ve already jettisoned Blocks and installed the free Fluid Checkout plugin instead. It has the same flow as the Checkout Block but sits on top of the legacy structure, so I didn’t have to sacrifice conversion to switch back. And I can also now use all of the other plugins that are incompatible with Blocks without having to jury rig new connections and styles every time there’s an update. Blocks just isn’t usable enough yet and with no development timeline or plans to integrate with basic extensions like gift cards, I just can’t keep using it. Maybe next year.
