The hunter

Today I just want to listen to a whole album of Tom Waits’s free-association army marches.

Whatever else he is, Chad Whitacre is amazing at accepting criticism (even when it’s disrespectful) graciously

Twitter-tip: if someone @’s 5 messages in a row to you, they are not “blowing up your mentions”. It is ONE paragraph, they are trying to communicate like a human.

In reply to Kyle Mahan,

I replaced Arch with Ubuntu 14.04 last night, laptop was getting very hot and I didn’t want to do the research/trial-and-error to fix it. Canonical folks have made installation incredibly easy, and it does seems to be running cooler, but I can’t believe they still have this god awful safety orange color everywhere.

Thunderbird, not Arch, seems to be the culprit. maxing out one core with all addons disabled and indexing turned off.

It must be really hard for the GnR guitarist to tell people his website “guns and roses dot com forward slash slash”

I don’t understand why @Ubuntu is shipping a broken Python3 in the first place? bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/python3.4/+bug/1290847

this is a story about how stupid the valuations of tech companies are

Well, I decided to drop GPL for my indieweb projects and go with pretty much the polar opposite (simplified BSD). Legality, patents, copyrights, CLAs, etc. are not likely to ever be applicable to me, but I am fascinated by the ethical issues around copyleft licenses. Do I care more about “free” (take this do whatever you want with it) or “open” (the ethical position that code should be available for study)? Would we have Linux without the GPL? There are huge commercial gains to be made by using Linux, but corporations are not allowed to change or improve it without contributing their changes back. But at the risk of massive understatement, I’m not writing Linux. I’m writing really boring code that uses interesting, experimental protocols. So it came down to:

  • There’s no good reason for me to try to protect code that literally anyone could write.
  • I WANT people to dink around with it at home, with no expectation that they need to release their code.

Blargh, spent too much time this evening writing about free software licenses and not enough time writing free software.

Hate to admit, I think the least awkward, gender-neutral 2nd personal plural pronoun might be “y’all”

recent Red Wind updates/features:

  • accepting domain-level webmentions (for mentioning a person, rather than a post)
  • allow guest log-ins via IndieAuth.
  • added “audience” parameter to post metadata, so private posts can be shared with one or more people

Data archival hero, Ethan sent me ~250MB of kindofblue.net backups. I was thinking about posting it on here, but it is some weird embarrassing shit, so … might rethink that.

I used to live in Bernal Heights when I lived in the city. Looks like you are a little farther west, but still nothing better than early morning / late afternoon up there.

Absolutely need to learn how to do my own bike maintenance. Taking it in to the shop is breaking me
