John Boos wood cutting boards

John Boos Mystery Oil

Step 1 to Protect your Cutting Board

John Boos Mystery Oil is a food grade oil that is best used as the first step in protecting your board (Step 2, Board Cream sold separately).

Easy To Apply

Apply a coat of John Boos Mystery Oil over the entire surface of your cutting board.

Seals and Moisturizes

Using a paper towel or clean cloth, spread the oil evenly over the board surface- don't forget the sides! Allow the oil to absorb, then wipe off the excess.

Great Results

Mystery oil is easily absorbed and penetrates deeply into the grains of the wood's surface to help protect and revitalize the fibers against drying, bleaching and cracking.

John Boos Oil & Cream: Complete Care for Wooden Cutting Boards, Utensils & More

John Boos recommends a very quick, simple and easy maintenance routine to protect and prolong the life of your John Boos cutting board or butcher block.

Use John Boos Mystery Oil first. The oil is absorbed into the grain, nourishing and preserving the board and restoring moisture lost through repeated washings.

Use John Boos Butcher Block Cream second to lock restored moisture in and leave a silky barrier against future drying, bleaching and cracking.

Both John Boos Mystery Oil and Board Cream are food safe and great for use on all types of wooden boards, utensils and more.

The History of John Boos & Co

In 1887, Effingham, Illinois blacksmith Conrad Boos used a Sycamore tree placed on three legs while hammering horseshoes. Three years later, a local butcher realized a wooden Boos Block could be used for cutting meat, and had one custom made. By 1911, John Boos & Co was shipping custom butcher blocks from coast to coast. Throughout the 20’s to 40’s, John Boos expanded and added tables and workbenches to their product range, the majority of which went to the war effort during WWII. By the 1940s, John Boos had earned their outstanding reputation for quality and craftsmanship, and their butcher blocks were found in every restaurant, food store and butcher shop in America. Today, the traditional craftsmen work ethic is still alive and well at John Boos, where all boards and butcher blocks are still proudly manufactured in Effingham, Illinois. Often imitated, John Boos boards and blocks are favorites of professional chefs and can be found in restaurants and commercial settings worldwide.

Product Description

Keep your wooden cutting boards and butcher blocks in prime condition with John Boos Block Mystery Oil. Once a month, apply an even coat of NSF Approved John Boos Mystery Oil to your cutting board or butcher block and allow it to soak in overnight. Allow the Mystery oil to fully penetrate through the wood fibers overnight, then wipe off any excess oil. Apply additional oil to any visible dry spots or for any other necessary reasons. Do not over oil your cutting board. Repeat this process more often when the board is brand new and “thirsty,” or if you live in a dry, arid climate. John Boos recommends applying John Boos Board Cream (sold separately) to seal the top of the wood surface after applying the Mystery Oil. A few quick minutes of regular oil application will ensure your new board is properly seasoned, and ready for work! Applied every three to four weeks, John Boos Mystery Oil prevents wood from drying, splitting, or cracking. Mystery Oil is safe for food preparation surfaces and can also be used to maintain wood countertops and wooden kitchen tools. Proudly Made in the USA of all Natural ingredients. NSF certified.

Fabulous and works great!
I love the Boos products and usually get the cream. This time I bought the oil to use on my 100 year old reclaimed custom built oak table and it worked wonders. The wood looks nourished. The wood is unfinished and see how pretty it is with the oil! The oil goes on smoothly and is not oily or sticky on the wood. I also used the oil on my wooden spoons and cutting boards with great results.

Every spring I work at the Southern California Renaissance Faire. My character has to have a wooden bowl for eating lunch. Boos block oil seals the wood so foods don't soak in and leave the bowl smelly, stained and, potentially, a breeding ground for bacteria.

Reviewed in Mexico on February 8, 2022
