Variety‘s Emily Longeretta and Michael Schneider break down the Emmys’ biggest drama performances — from both lead and supporting categories — in the latest episode of Variety‘s Awards Circuit, presented by Showtime.

Schneider and Longeretta discuss the wide range of dramatic performances that are up for contention this year via genre shows like “Andor” and “House of the Dragon,” as well as several series up for their final season submission, including “Succession” and “Better Call Saul.”

“Succession” could have nine members of the cast competing for acting awards, including Sarah Snook for leading actress, J. Smith Cameron for supporting actress, Matthew Macfadyen, Nicholas Braun, Alan Ruck, Alex Skarsgård in supporting actor and lead actor contenders Kieran Culkin, Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong.

While there are several “Succession” actors vying for awards, Schneider remarked that a three-way race may allow for the other nominees to potentially take home the award. As Schneider explained, this is the time to give it to “Better Call Saul’s” Bob Odenkirk, who has been nominated for his portrayal in the “Breaking Bad” spinoff series five times, but has yet to be awarded for his work.

After a successful sophomore season, “The White Lotus” might also have several performers in multiple categories, with F. Murray Abraham for supporting actor and Aubrey Plaza for supporting actress, as well as Jennifer Coolidge for supporting actress in her final performance on the series.

Plaza and Coolidge could be in competition with “Yellowjackets” star Christina Ricci, as well as “The Crown” standout Elizabeth Debicki. While Debicki is up for consideration as “The Crown’s” supporting actress, Imelda Staunton may be in contention an lead actress, and also compete with another “Yellowjackets” performer, Melanie Lynskey. While “The Crown,” “Succession” and “Yellowjackets” are likely to boast leading and supporting actress contenders, “Better Call Saul” may also receive nominations in the supporting actress category for both Carol Burnett and 2022 Emmy nominee Rhea Seehorn.

In addition to the several series that are ending their runs, Schneider and Longeretta noted how the new HBO thriller “The Last of Us” may garner nominations for its leads in both categories, including Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.
