Casting Networks No Good Very Bad Year! As most of us in the industry know, Casting Networks recently changed its business model from having a set number of photos and videos a talent could upload to having a set amount of storage space a talent could use for their reels and photos. Unfortunately the storage space also housed their self tapes making it hard for some actors to stay in the boundaries of a free account. I had guessed the change to storage based was a way for Casting Networks to show they aren't asking talent to pay for auditions, they're asking them to pay for storage. I was very recently complaining that some of our represented talent weren't able to submit for auditions that we had gotten them because of this new tiered storage system. It doesn't look like actor's are buying it either, and now the courts will get to decide. In the past, actors spent thousands of dollars a year snail mailing headshots and reels (actual physical tapes) to Casting Directors. Agencies spent even more on messengers and mail services to send packages of actors and models to Casting Directors. This cost was then passed on to the talent. When these online services showed up it was a pretty welcome development for a lot of people's bottom line. Many actors and models today are far removed from that time so their world view on the cost of being an actor and model is understandably different. I'm torn because Casting Networks makes it so easy to get talent in front of Casting Directors for projects, we can track auditions, we can see who's booking, who's getting callbacks, etc. I also understand that Casting Networks has to pay a full staff to run the site, they pay for website, they have payroll taxes, insurance costs, licenses, state and local taxes, utilities, etc. If the service was 100% free with unlimited storage, who would pay to run the company? On the other hand, with the amount of talent currently using the site, the fees are pretty high and I believe that self tapes should not count toward storage totals. There's also the issue of non union projects. These don't fall under SAG rules and there are a plethora of non union projects on Casting Networks and ohter casting sites. If the lawsuit is successful, will CN just stop listing union projects or does the California law prevent that too? Where will talent find union auditions if casting sites stop listing union projects? iActor is only available to SAG talent. If Casting Networks falls, is Actor's Access next? This is in CA right now, will NY be next? Will Casting Directors have to go back to emailing individual agencies asking for submissions? This could really hurt smaller and new agencies and the talent they rep. What do you think? Is this going to help or hurt actors/models in the long run and how? I would love to hear from actors as well as casting directors to get a view from both sides. #castingnetworkslawsuit

📣 PARAMOUNT UPDATE: For months, the industry’s been on tenterhooks, watching the Paramount acquisition. Today’s presentation shows the studio is positioning for one helluva fight. This morning’s developments further complicate the bid from Skydance. The presentation by Paramount brass at the annual stockholders’ meeting appears to be NOT ONLY a strategic move to reassure shareholders but also to sway Shari Redstone about the studio’s potential without the need for an acquisition. It has certainly swayed the stock price dramatically over the last 48 hours. The update presents a more complex scenario. Here’s why: While Skydance’s offer remains financially exciting at $4.75B — the presentation by Office of the CEO Trio (George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy, and Brian Robbins), shifts favor in maintaining the status quo. Here’s an overview of new considerations: • Paramount’s Presentation: Highlights included recent successes/strategic initiatives. Emphasizing hit franchises (Ninja Turtles, et al.); cost-cutting measures totaling $500M+; and robust revenue streams aimed to boost shareholder confidence potentially making the case altogether against the NEED for Skydance’s bid. • Financial/Performance Strategy: Paramount’s commitment to cutting $500+ million in overhead and maximizing shareholder value through strategic initiatives like content windowing, licensing, and MUCH-NEEDED revamp on merchandising — shows a proactive approach to financial health and growth. This strengthens the argument for maintaining the status quo. • Redstone in the Catbird Seat: Shari’s decision may (or may not) be swayed by the presentation, reinforcing her confidence in her team, making her less inclined to accept Skydance’s ambitious bid — LEADING TO A RESISTANCE AGAINST THE ACQUISITION — if shareholders believe current brass can deliver continued growth and profitability. IF. • Skydance’s Position: With former NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell, they’ll need to present a super compelling strategic vision/operational plan to counter Paramount’s strong Hail-Mary and demonstrate how their acquisition would outperform current management’s roadmap. Wrap-Up! The plot thickens. Skydance’s offer remains financially e n t i c i n g — $4.75B downgraded from $5B — whilst Paramount’s strong presentation could shift sentiment in favor of maintaining the status quo. The probability of the acquisition has become more tenuous with Shari Redstone’s final decision now more closely tied to the perceived effectiveness and future potential of her existing management team. Skydance will need to strategically counter this by demonstrating superior long-term benefits to shareholders and the company as a whole. With or without an acquisition — Shari Redstone is perched in the catbird seat, holding all the cards amongst the Office of the CEO — and I, for one, from one Girl Boss to another, am cheering her on to bring it home. #film #entertainment #media #paramountglobal #skydancemedia

A new debate on the cost of cool, which digs into the environmental impact of increasing vinyl sales and rising concerns among several major artists. In summary, some counter-argue that the tech behind vinyls is significantly evolving, notably with BioVinyl, whilst others mention the environmental cost of storage data from streaming platforms. For me, it is entertainment, it is what consumers want, and it is the same debate as EV cars vs. good old gas. It’s evolution meets nostalgia. What do you reckon?

Already, 50 UK festivals have announced they will either postpone, cancel, or completely shut down in 2024. Without immediate intervention, we could see the number of lost festivals exceed 100 this year due to rising and unpredictable costs. In early February, the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) launched the "5% For Festivals" campaign, advocating for a temporary VAT reduction on festival tickets to prevent more closures. This campaign aimed to raise awareness among festival-goers about the challenges faced by promoters over the past five years and encouraged them to lobby their MPs for support. However, the campaign is currently on hold as the country prepares for a general election. The solution is clear: the UK Government needs to provide temporary relief by reducing VAT on ticket sales from 20% to 5% for the next three years. This would give festival promoters the breathing room they need to recover and continue offering vibrant cultural events. For more details, read the full story https://lnkd.in/d3wPUR7r

Super Exciting News 🚀 Sony Music has taken a significant step by creating "Rock Bidco" to bid for the legendary British rock band Queen's music catalogue, potentially one of the biggest music sales in history, valued at over $1 billion! 🎸🎶 "Rock Bidco" was incorporated on May 17 and is controlled by Tim Major, co-leader of Sony Music Publishing. With Queen's extensive catalogue including recorded music, publishing rights, merchandise, licensing, and revenue from the biopic *Bohemian Rhapsody*, this acquisition marks a monumental move for Sony Music. The band, once fronted by the iconic Freddie Mercury, has been in discussions with Sony and Universal Music for over a year. While Universal dropped out due to high pricing, Sony remains in the race, potentially working with another company to finance the deal. This follows Sony's successful $500mn-plus acquisition of Bruce Springsteen’s catalogue, co-financed with Eldridge Industries. As music rights become a sought-after asset class, this move underscores the growing value and lasting impact of iconic music catalogues. 🌟📀 Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops! #MusicIndustry #SonyMusic #Queen #FreddieMercury #MusicRights #BohemianRhapsody #RockLegends #IndustryNews https://lnkd.in/dKRJcaJi

Neighbouring rights are often overlooked in music acquisition deals. It's crucial to consider them when reviewing rights to be acquired. Could they be a standalone asset? Do they include sub rights that could increase their value in the future? Let's spark a conversation on this topic. #musicacquisition #musicrights #AImusic #mentor Read more: https://lnkd.in/ePgeKZWB

If I were starting over my music career today and wanted to achieve success, I'd do follow this dead-simple three step framework: Step 1: Embrace and learn from criticism. • It keeps you humble. • It pushes you to improve. • It helps you recognise your most loyal fans. Step 2: Understand that success and failure are temporary. Most people skip this step entirely. But this is a huge mistake—getting too attached to either success or failure can prevent you from growing and moving forward. Step 3: Use failures as opportunities for growth. This isn't easy. But if you can do this, you will get: • Resilience. • Patience. • Thoughtfulness. Don't skip this step. I did and it took me nearly 10 years to learn this priceless lesson P.S. If you’re a musician, producer, songwriter or teacher, let me know if this sounds familiar: You want to write content that gets you followers, establishes you as an authority in your space & gets you clients. But there’s a problem and I believe I can help you solve this problem. I'll indulge this one time 😎👇

There has long been an issue within the music industry, of trying to get past #Gatekeepers and get music in front of top #name artists for their consideration for future singles and albums. The are of course music #pluggers who charge small fortunes based on promises, but having seen how some work, I wouldn't waste my money going down that route. Then of course, you can send you music to the A&R department at their label, who are usually swamped with thousands of tracks for every big artist they represent, so that's a REAL longshot! Some advise that the best way to get to an artist is through their #PR people as many are very close to the artist and can short-cut the process, but I would feel very cheeky approaching PR's for such a 'favour'. What processes have YOU successfully used to get your music in front of a big selling artist?

This isn't good news ... but not surprising. "UK spend for film productions for the first quarter (Q1) of 2024 was £211m, 45% lower than the £381m reported in the first three months of 2023" "For Q1 2024, the total number of films that started production was 22, which is 19 fewer than the 41 reported for Q1 2023 at this stage last year" "There were 12 local UK features which started production in Q1 2024 (compared to 17 that were reported as going into production in Q1 2023)" "UK films contributed £24m of the total spend, representing a 22% decrease from £31m of Q1 2023" 12 productions, £24m spend - that's an average of £2m per production. And I know I've said this before, but I truly believe that until we learn to embrace the new distribution dynamic with new and appropriate finance/recoupment models it won't be long before this downward spiral nose-dives into the ground ... because that's where we're headed. We can't rely on the old outdated models; we need to create new ones that encourage greater investment from private equity investors - it's the only way to turn this mess around. https://lnkd.in/ebUvQfjV?

Understanding advances is crucial for independent music creatives because it directly impacts their income and financial stability. While advances offer immediate funds, they come with the risk of delaying future earnings, as they need to be recouped through royalties. This knowledge empowers creatives to make informed decisions about accepting advances, ensuring they weigh the benefits against potential setbacks, and manage their finances effectively. #IndieMusic #MusicBiz #AdvancesInMusic #IndependentArtists #MusicFinance #CreativeEarnings #RoyaltyManagement #FinancialLiteracy #MusicIndustryInsights #MusicIncome

We have a new season of live audio described performances across 2024-2025 at the Royal Ballet and Opera. Dates to announced soon. As part of the developing Access project the team have been exploring the incorporation of Audio Description in promotional videos. Linked to this post is a YouTube video featuring a 23 second season launch trailer with Audio Description placed over the soundtrack. This is just an initial step, as we move to more integrated processes in collaboration with our Audio Describers and artists. As someone who trained as an Audio Describer, it’s such an insightful process to explore audio description inclusion across new functions and teams. It opens rich conversations about what is useful information, what is assumed and how biases can quickly surface but also be challenged. A small movement forward, but hopefully the start of laying the foundations for long lasting Accessibility. #RoyalBalletOpera #Access #AudioDescription YouTube thumbnail ID. A dancer lifts another, small in perspective against a cosmic iris like circle that fills the backdrop of the stage. The words imagination, inspiration and experience appear, centred with the words 'audio described' placed in the top right corner. The entire point of our campaign consulting service is to take a complete step away from the traditional music PR service, which for independent artists specifically has become largely redundant in building repeat listenership. For independent acts outsourcing 'release / label services' can often lead to feelings of failure and uncertainty as those services take control, much needed finances and any chance to up-skill in a new area outside of an artists control. Campaign Consulting is aimed at working with artist through ALL areas of their release, from the point of distribution all of the way post their release. We cover release strategy, infrastructure, media, digital, social and live, with the primary focus on up skilling artists on a 'label standard' release cycle. Beyond just pitching and posting content, artists are taken through generating and maintaining databases, best practices for media pitches and are given all of the resources to be able to continuously develop and streamline in this area. Why outsource when you can learn and streamline it yourself? Some great feedback here from Vanessa Lawless, an artist who just undertook our 4x week campaign consulting for her latest release.

Music Business 101: What are Income Sources for Songwriters Signing a Music Publishing Deal? Some of the most common income sources a songwriter needs to be aware of when signing a Music Publishing deal include Performance, Mechanical, Sync & Sheet royalties. Signing to a music publisher is a major step in the career for a songwriter. It is important for a songwriter to understand these common income sources and the royalty rates being offered. Unlike the common 50/50 deals offered from record labels, royalty rates are traditionally different per income source from music publishers. If you find these posts useful or know someone who will, share the post with them 🙌 #musicbusiness101 #musicindustry

My #1 takeaway from #MusicBiz2024 (from the women's small-group Roundtable with Gemma McInturff): 💭Finding your purpose is key - what drives you? Find this and move forward with this intention throughout your career. Simple and challenging. A few days and several drafts later, I came up with this: 💎 I support entertainers, executives, and entrepreneurs with the day-to-day business operations and project management support they need to optimize their endeavors and stay focused on their Zone of Genius. This will evolve as I do, but it's already giving me so much clarity! What's yours?? 👇🏽
