RSA – Gentle Guider: A new generation for Guide Dogs

To design the Gentle Guider, I firstly interviewed, observed and questioned blind users such as Linda about their daily lives. What do they personally struggle with, observing gadgets and daily routines? The Guide Dog harness kept cropping up!

Linda wanted change in the harness, not just for her independence but to make Kara’s harness comfortable, something she feels proud wearing. Working with Guide Dog Trainers helped me to develop designs. The harness originally, was loose fitting, wearing out and breaking easily. “My Dog Deserves Better!”

Visiting Manufacturers of the guide dog harness, I understood why there was small change in 80 years. They could not develop so radically and were not aware of 3D scanning and 3D Connex Printing.

3D scanning and new additive manufacture technologies pushed the boundaries of my design. 3D scanning each dog in training gives a fitting harness that will be durable and grow with the dog for its entire working life.

The Gentle Guider provides more feedback due to fit, suppressing Linda’s worry of Kara wearing something uncomfortable! It’s also breathable and easier to orientate due to the minimization and flexibility of parts. Being easily cleaned by dipping in hot water.

The harness glows in the dark, no need for ambient lighting from headlights. People can now recognize Linda easily at night. The clip is a design taking advantage of 3D printing, for easy orientation and greater strength, with texture on the handle to suggest the harnesses orientation.

A better life for the Guide Dog also means a better life for the Blind User!
