With the upcoming long bank holiday weekend approaching, many of us will be enjoying delicious meals prepared by friends and family. But amidst the festivities, it's important to consider the potential risks of harmful bacteria lurking in our kitchens. Ipsos UK recently conducted a survey to explore Brits' habits and beliefs around food hygiene. Shockingly, 4 in 10 people admitted to using the same tea towel for multiple purposes, neglecting the advice of the Food Standards Agency. Other concerning practices include checking phones while cooking (36%) and storing leftover food in open containers in the fridge (19%). Despite the FSA warning about the dangers of slowly chilling food, 6 in 10 respondents believed it was safer to let food cool to room temperature before refrigerating it. The survey also uncovered misconceptions about freezing food, eating food off the floor, and washing chicken before cooking. Ipsos researcher Federica Curcurú highlighted the disconnect between knowledge and actions when it comes to food hygiene. While most may get away with these habits, the reality is that over 2.4 million cases of food poisoning occur in the UK each year according to the FSA. The survey serves as a reminder of the importance of debunking common myths and practicing good food hygiene. With the recent headline inflation numbers looking solid, and retail sales returning to growth in May after the April slump, you have to wonder whether the positive streak for confidence will continue next month, even with the Tory narrative of "see, you can trust us with the economy" feeling more than just a little out of touch (and unlikely to be enough to get them back in power). Consumers do like certainty, and this week's BoE hold reinforces that, with fears of worse mortgage pain to come undoubtedly quelled. But brands and retailers should be careful not to equate this result with people feeling positive overall - it is more like they are less negative. There remains a long way to go I suspect before consumers will be happy to spend more freely again, with the major purchase index barely changed from 12 months ago at minus 23. High interest rates makes savings an appealing place to put any spare money, so as long as interest rates remain high, consumers with debt and consumers without will respectively have barriers and motivating drivers to keep hold of their money.

British grocery price #inflation has also fallen for the fifteenth month in a row to 2.4%, the lowest level since October 2021 and 15% points lower than this time last year, whilst sales rose by 2.9% over the four weeks to 12 May. Grocery price inflation is gradually returning to what we would consider more normal levels. It’s now sitting only 0.8 percentage points higher than the 10-year average of 1.6% between 2012 and 2021, which is just before prices began to climb. Typically, an inflation rate of around 3% is when we start to see marked changes in consumers’ behaviour, with shoppers trading down to cheaper items when the rate goes above this line and vice versa when the rate drops. However, after nearly two and a half years of rapidly rising prices, it could take a bit longer for shoppers to unwind the habits they have learnt to help them manage the cost of living crisis. This is a good news story, with a proviso! The insight function in client-side enterprises is more integrated and integral to commercial and corporate decision making than in the past - but there is still a way to go... I remember back in 2015 when the original study was conducted. I was unsurprised and pretty saddened by the fact that insight functions were not perceived as strategic or value-adding to their businesses. The situation has moved on, based on this latest study from GRBN (Global Research Business Network) but there is still opportunity and progress to be made - which I think we all know. As I see it, we need to faciliate and win a shift in the perception of insight and research, it from being treated as a cost in a business to an investment - with the accompanying recognition that if you don't invest in your business, you don't grow as effectively or expectation requires. Research and insight should be growth engines for organisations, and we are definitely making progress with this - but agencies and insight teams need to collaborate and work together to continue to move the investment positioning along... Some interesting news Drayton found from the #food and #drinks world this week: 1. Grocery Price Inflation Returning To Normal; Although Asda And Aldi UK Lag Behind Rivals. Latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel show that take-home grocery sales in the UK rose by 2.9% over the four weeks to 12 May, while grocery price inflation fell for the fifteenth month in a row to 2.4% – the lowest level since October 2021. According to Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Kantar, “Grocery price inflation is gradually returning to what we would consider more normal levels,” 2. BUXTON BREWERY COMPANY LTD has been sold in pre-pack administration deal to a company known as ‘Happy Place Investors’. The deal would safeguard “the future of the brewery and the group’s taprooms and bars in Buxton”, according to Interpath Advisory. 3. Ferrero Group has introduced the company’s first sugar candy, Tic Tac Chewy, at the 2024 Sweets & Snacks Expo in the US. Tic Tac Chewy will be available from September at various retailers including Amazon. 4. Diageo has announced plans to invest over €100 million to decarbonise its historic St. James’s Gate site in Dublin 8, where Guinness has been brewed for 264 years. The investment underpins the goal to accelerate to net zero carbon emissions for the site and will transform energy and water consumption with the aim to make it one of the most efficient breweries in the world by 2030. 5. Kellanova is introducing Pringles Mingles, a puffed alternative to the chip that will come in a bag. In GB, grocery price #inflation has fallen to 3.2% over the four weeks to 14 April, a level last seen in 2021, marking the fourteenth monthly drop in a row. The decline has been aided by a significant increase in promotional spending, with items bought on offer making up 29.3% of supermarket sales – the highest level outside of Christmas since June 2021. Overall take-home grocery sales rose by 3.3% this month.
