"Women make up just over a third of the European tech workforce, but they represent 41.6% of layoffs since October 2022." Whilst a reason for this could be that women are highly represented in roles in marketing, PR. HR and DEI, which are usually the first few roles to go when a business is scaling back - it highlights the fact that women need to be better represented in Technology focused roles, that are often considered more 'business critical'. #diversity #womenintechnology #europe

To blur, or not to blur? https://lnkd.in/ePUeGAVc This week I’ve enjoyed lots of positive conversations with both clients and candidates, and we’ve also signed up to a new video interview platform (Odro) which we’re making the most of. I record videos, and interview candidates on video, daily, but I’ve never been entirely sure whether to blur my background. I have a dedicated office during the day, but its clearly a multi-purpose room that’s crammed with musical instruments, a TV that doesn’t seem to fit in any other room, a well-stocked cocktail bar, and often a cat or two (the number of cats staring at me inevitably increases as dinnertime approaches). Like many people, the pandemic was my first real experience of doing my job from home. There were many hilarious moments at first, as I learned the hard way that there is nothing more interesting to a cat than a man on my laptop screen with an animated voice and gesturing hands. So shutting the door of my office to little paws became a habit. But even then, I had a very old TV set in the background of my old house that seemed to generate even more interest than the inquisitive cat (I was once asked ‘wow, does that still work?’ three times in a week). And then one candidate I was interviewing remarked that we both had the same vacuum cleaner. I didn’t really know what to do with that- it was a rubbish vacuum cleaner, so I could hardly compliment him on his excellent purchase. Anyway, blurring my background became a habit, alongside shutting the door.  Sadly, this also seemed to shut the metaphorical door to lots of interesting conversations about cats and guitars (and even one brief jam session). Which seems a bit of a shame, as it’s a nice way to build relationships with other cat lovers and guitar enthusiasts.  On the flipside though, I’ve also been in the unenviable position of having to politely ask people I’m interviewing if they could blur their backgrounds. I’m just trying to help. Spoiler: you’re not going to get the job you’re interviewing for, if your living room resembles the aftermath of a hurricane/3 day bender/alien autopsy. So with this in mind, I will continue to blur. But just for the record, I like cats and guitars, and if we should ever end up in a Teams meeting wherein I discover that you have either cats or guitars in your background, I’ll be happy to break the ice.

Being reminded today how encouraging and mindset changing a simple jesture of recognition can be to a situation. Her first official game today (after 6 months of nagging to play!) and the score showed one story - a fairly big loss. However, the players took the positives from the game and someone 😉 won player of the match due to their commitment to keep going, even when things were heavily against them. A lot can be said about a game of basketball and a workplace. It was their first as a team (building trust), the coach was new and is still working thru the best combinations (leadership & strategy), the players had to navigate a different level of umpiring (the need to deliver set expectations) and the competition didn’t always play by the rules (ethics & integrity). In business, we might give up and feel defeated - this is when the recognition of effort is sooo critical. As 10 year olds, these girls will be back out on that court next week trying their best and staying committed to the goal - a win. If it’s not a win, a lot of learnings will keep on coming their way! #WisdomFromOurKids #Leadership #Teamwork #Recognition #Confidence #GamePlan #LearningNotFailing

As #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek comes to a close it’s giving me the chance to reflect on what helps me find a balance between the hectic work day, busy home life and my mental wellbeing. Excercise for me is the best natural medicine and an essential part of my day. I start every day with a 6am session at the gym setting the energy levels right and keeping the mind in a good place allowing me to manage any stresses and work through all challenges. #wellbeing

As the weekend approaches, it’s a good time to reflect on the importance of having colleagues who go above and beyond to support us. Massive shoutout to our marketing team for the latest STEM Skills Report - available for FREE using the link below! One of the standout findings this quarter is the significant gap in AI adoption within HR departments. Only 15% of HR functions are currently using AI, compared to an all-department average of 26%. Anecdotally, I've noticed that most TA teams are expected to find their own way when introducing Gen AI products into their daily work (though this isn't unique to TA). A great example of this done well is the impressive work by the HMRC recruitment team. However, without clear parameters and education around AI usage, several risks arise: ➡Data and IP Risks: Individuals might share sensitive data with Gen AI platforms, creating unknown legal and commercial risks for the business. ➡ Duplicated Efforts: Departments may duplicate efforts to understand and implement AI, preventing collective business improvement. ➡ Uncontrolled Usage: Individuals using private accounts for Gen AI mean the business lacks visibility and control over usage and shared information. ➡ Incomplete Implementation: Teams might not fully implement AI due to a lack of skills or fear of risks. The result from our report shows this stark reality: 85% of HR teams have not implemented AI due to skill gaps or concerns about risks. How to help TA leaders navigate this challenge is a key focus for me.
