Up to 60% of clinicians' time is spent on computers rather than with their patients. It’s time to change that! Speaking to The Times, our co-founder and CEO, Dr Dom Pimenta M.D., highlights that by leveraging AI-powered technology within the NHS, we can reduce the time clinicians spend on computers and allow them to focus on the job they signed up for. A British Medical Association survey found that 7 in 10 trainee GPs experience burnout and stress. This is exacerbated by staff shortages, long hours, and a 25% increase in administrative tasks over the past seven years. With NHS workers spending up to 14 hours a week on paperwork, AI presents a solution that can ease the administrative burden on healthcare professionals by improving the efficiency of clinical consultations and saving up to 30% of clinician time. Cognitive overload is a major concern for clinicians. Is the poor implementation of EHR systems worsening the problem? In a recent contribution to Integrated Care Journal , our co-founder and CEO, Dr Dom Pimenta M.D., discussed findings from a paper published in JMIR Publications and co-authored by the TORTUS team, clinicians and researchers. The paper examines the significant effects of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) on clinicians' cognitive loads and burnout risks. The authors used cognitive load theory to understand how routine EHR use impacts clinicians. Those managing complex patient data and making critical decisions under pressure are especially prone to cognitive overload. Poorly designed EHR systems, with inefficient interfaces, excessive documentation, and cumbersome navigation, further increase this issue. To reduce cognitive overload, we recommend improving EHR user interfaces by simplifying and streamlining them. Presenting information succinctly and automating documentation can free up cognitive resources. While clinician burnout has multiple causes, improving EHR design and implementation can significantly mitigate its effects. By providing clinicians with the best EHR systems and integrated technologies, we can enhance their efficiency and improve patient outcomes. For GP Partner Dr David Triska, the challenge of keeping up with paperwork during clinical consultations often resulted in feelings of burnout by the end of the week. When striving to actively listen to patients while accurately documenting their concerns, two common scenarios may arise: 🐢 You manage to take detailed notes, but the patient may feel their concerns were not fully heard 🐢 You focus on actively listening, yet struggle to recall specific details discussed during appointments But, things are changing!
