#OnThisDay in 1991, Dr Helen Sharman OBE became Britain’s first astronaut when she launched to the Mir space station as a research cosmonaut. 🚀🇬🇧 Helen was also: 👩🚀 The first Western European woman in space 🛰️ The first woman to visit the Mir space station In 1989, Helen responded to a radio advert for astronauts and was selected from over 13,000 applicants. ✔️ She then underwent 18 months of training in Star City, Russia. Helen launched on Soyuz TM-12 alongside Soviet cosmonauts, Anatoly Artsebarsky and Sergei Krikalev as part of the joint Soviet Union-British Project Juno. 🚀 Their Soyuz spacecraft docked with Mir on 21 May. 🛰️ During her time on Mir, Helen conducted medical and agricultural experiments. 🔬 She returned to Earth on 26 May after spending 7 days, 21 hours, and 13 minutes in space. 🌍 Since returning to Earth, Helen has continued to inspire through her outreach work with students and awing audiences around the world as a science communicator.
