About us

Rare is a legendary development studio dedicated to creating the kind of games the world doesn’t have. Our games are created with passion, inspired to be distinctive and designed to bring friends together to share stories and make memories. Nowhere is this clearer than in our ever-evolving, award-winning, shared-world pirate adventure Sea of Thieves, which continues to be one of this generation’s most creative and successful new IPs. Alongside continuing to surprise and delight our players on the seas, our team is creating the next IP from Rare: Everwild, a restorative magical, natural world filled with creatures, spirits, wonder and friendship. Our culture is built on genuine support and care for each other as the wellbeing of our team is essential. Rare is a place for us to learn, connect and contribute, broadening our individual horizons and empowering us all to do our best work together. Our purpose-built campus with state-of-the-art technology is surrounded by countryside and nature. It’s an inspiring and magical place to collaborate and create new experiences, with opportunities for both recuperation and wellbeing.

A little under two weeks ago, Rare hosted 2024's Women of Xbox UK Event! From quizzes and panels to creating a space for loads of important conversations, the day continues to be an important event championing women across Xbox UK teams and studio networks.

    • A huge crowd of women from Xbox UK stand in a field cheering for the photographer, an ice cream van sat awaiting orders in the background.
    • A panel of five women from Xbox UK sit on a slightly raised stage within a tent, talking all about their jobs in games.
    • A banner talks about the Women of Xbox UK group, as tables stretch into the distance, within a very large tent, tables full of interested attendees.

Staff have been bringing their good boys and girls into the studio for a while, but now, alongside ample woodland walks, Rare's grounds offer a dedicated dog park! This gives pooches their own space to cut loose and chomp complimentary toys to their adorable hearts' content.

    • Two dogs look at you, one lying down, its tongue dangling in utter contentment, the other strutting and giving a bit of a snarl.
    • A dog leaps energetically towards a blue ball in the air. They'll get it, we believe in them.
    • A small white dog is far too close to the camera and very out of focus, which simply adds to how adorable it is.
    • A shot of three dogs alongside someone hurling a toy. Two of the dogs are very engaged with the toy, leaping and scampering for their lives. The third is closer to camera and just looks a bit tired, honestly.

Toucans land in Sea of Thieves this week, so enjoy Audio duo Chloe and Katie sourcing curious clicks and happy chirps from the real thing! Just before he nicked the microphone cover. Special thanks to Birdworld Surrey for letting us record Boy, their Toco Toucan.

Rare on the road! Occasionally we like to pop out to help share some of our team’s expertise with up-and-coming talent, and this week led two of our lot, Jim and Nadia, to a careers fair at Moseley School in nearby Birmingham. Their job? Chat to Year 9 students about the fact that yes, you can work in games, as part of the school’s desire to showcase different careers and options children can choose. Jim and Nadia achieved this by giving insights on an average day at the studio, talking about their paths into the industry, probably championing the quality of cake at Rare and holding a general Q&A.

    • Two developers from Rare stand outside Moseley school with wide grins on their faces.

Found a gap in the swarming bees yesterday to have a Pride Picnic at the studio, complete with vibrant sweet treats and a delicious spread from our consistently marvellous catering team. Staff can also be observed breaking out some colourful clothing choices for the event. Beautiful!

    • A queue of game developers in a range of colours waiting in line for their lunch. Deck chairs are also visible but are empty, because most people sensibly retreated to shade immediately given that nobody wanted to actually melt.
    • Catering staff serve up quiche, sausage rolls, vegan meats, salad and a variety of other delicious nibbles. They're too good for us, honestly.
    • A colourful sign reading "Pride Picnic" next to a tray of cutlery and a pair of Pride Progress flags.
    • An impressive display of cupcakes in a rainbow of cases, with various multicoloured toppings including hearts, Smarties and those rainbow fizzy strips which are delicious, though the combo of those with butter cream feels somewhat unnatural.
