California is about to enter the main part of wildfire season. We used our WeatherDesk and ClimateDesk platforms to help NBC News report on how temperatures this summer have been 5 degrees above the 2020 temperatures and how temperatures and precipitation amounts are expected to change between 2024 and 2040. Check out their story here: Video: https://ow.ly/vgoQ50SKwT8 Text article: https://ow.ly/EWZL50SKwT7 In this GIF, ClimateDesk shows the change in forecasted days with little to no precipitation between July and October in 2024 and 2040. Despite it being the dry part of California’s water year, the increase in pink zones between 2024 and 2040 in the central part of the state is a concern because they represent areas that will likely see more than 100 dry days, which could stress vegetation and increase wildfire risk. Today, we’re releasing the first images from our second WorldView Legion satellite! Just a week after the first WorldView Legion collected its first images, we’re now getting a look at Singapore, South Africa, Spain and Brazil with the second satellite. These 30 cm-class images from July 24, 2024, reflect the high-quality capabilities of the newest satellites to join the Maxar constellation. Images: 1️⃣ Singapore: This 32-degree off-nadir image demonstrates the agility of the new WorldView Legion satellites. At this angle, windows can clearly be distinguished, company logos can be read, and the number of stories can be counted on the sides of skyscrapers. The famous Fullerton Hotel Singapore is in the foreground of the image. 2️⃣ Johannesburg, South Africa: The Nelson Mandela Bridge (right) and De Villiers Graaff Motorway (left) span the large railyard adjacent to Johannesburg Park Station, a main train terminal in the city. Individual rail lines and overhead line equipment, as well as dozens of rail cars, can be seen in this image. 3️⃣ Madrid, Spain: This busy plaza is called Puerta del Sol, or Gate of the Sun, and it is home to the marker for the beginning of the radial road network in Spain as well as two famous statues. The streets across the bottom of the image have colorful fabric strung between the buildings to provide shade for the pedestrians. 4️⃣ Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Surfers catch waves while people stroll along Leblon Beach, which is dotted with occasional umbrellas. Crosswalks, road markings and bike lanes are visible in paint while pedestrian walkways are defined by the area’s famous mosaic sidewalks. Successful deliveries demand up-to-date maps. Whether you identify areas of concern via automated change detection or from information on the ground, knowing exactly what changed is necessary. With Maxar’s daily imagery collections, you can monitor progress of rapidly evolving areas at local and global scale, while also verifying, updating and expanding your maps. The WorldView Legion era has officially begun! We’re excited to share the first official images from our next-generation satellites. 📸 These beautiful 30 cm-class images of San Francisco and Sacramento, California, were collected on July 16, 2024, by one of our WorldView Legion satellites on orbit:  1️⃣ Small details are visible on, and around, San Francisco City Hall, including solar panels on top of the building and lane markings through intersections and streetlamps. The green lanes mark bicycle paths while the red lanes are dedicated city transit vehicles. All these details are useful for building foundational maps for government use cases, consumer applications and mobility and logistics planning. 2️⃣ People playing on soccer fields in San Francisco, with cleanly defined white boundary lines and stadium lights. 3️⃣ A bulk carrier ship docked in Washington Lake, next to the Sacramento River Deep Water Ship Channel. You can see that the ship has two cargo holds open and identify the current equipment in use for port operations—both examples of important details for site monitoring missions. 4️⃣ This interchange between Highway 50 and Elvas Freeway, southeast of downtown Sacramento, shows vehicles in motion and roadway markings. We are continuing to progress through the full commissioning and calibration process for both satellites on orbit, and we expect them to be supporting customer missions soon. These state-of-the-art satellites will significantly extend our 30 cm collection capacity advantage and enhance the revisit rate of our industry-leading constellation. The added capacity will also fuel Maxar's innovation, providing more near-real time data for software products that leverage modern artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to extract faster insights from geospatial data.
