The legendary Bruce Beasley has been perfecting his craft for six decades, witnessing waves of new design tools come and go. This year, the Around 3D Design Festival offers a rare opportunity to share his experiences and insights into the evolving role of technology in industrial design. In a live fireside chat with Bruce Beasley, we’ll delve into the evolution of his sculpting techniques since his journey began in 1960. What are the benefits and challenges of integrating digital design into traditional sculpture? How has technology, particularly platforms like Gravity Sketch, contributed to his creative process? Is digital input in design a threat or a collaboration? These questions will provoke a deeper understanding of the symbiotic relationship between the old and the new. We’ll also take a virtual tour of the Bruce Beasley Museum, offering an invitation to witness how digital design has influenced Beasley’s recent works and become an integral part of his creative process. From the intricate details of his sculptures to the innovative tools he employs, we’ll explore his creative journey piece by piece. In a rapidly changing design world, it’s important to take a broad look at these transformations. Rarely participating in interviews of this format, Bruce Beasley’s insights are not to be missed. Are the lines Between Digital and Physical Merging? We've observed that creatives are blurring the space between digital methods and hands-on craftsmanship in today's virtual studio. At Around 3D Design festival this year Gustav Winsth will present the Reality Chair, sharing a workflow that addresses this conversation head-on. Gustav Winsth and Alexander Lervik’s innovative Reality Chair is a testament to the power of merging virtual reality (VR) technology with traditional craftsmanship. Utilizing the Gravity Sketch platform, they engaged in virtual design sessions that allowed for unrestricted creative exploration. This method enabled them to conceptualize a freeform, bulbous design reminiscent of inflatables, something that traditional design constraints often limit. Once the design was perfected in VR, the challenge was to bring it to life. They collaborated with skilled metalworkers, typically engaged in shaping motorcycle gas tanks, to manually craft the chair from polished aluminum. This process, known as manual pressure turning, underscores the importance of artisanal skill in realizing complex, fluid shapes that large-scale manufacturers struggle to achieve. The Reality Chair’s debut at the Stockholm Furniture Fair highlighted this innovative fusion, showcasing the potential of VR to revolutionize design while maintaining the integrity and beauty of traditional craftsmanship. This project not only exemplifies how digital tools can enhance creative possibilities but also underscores the enduring value of skilled craftsmanship in the modern design landscape. Do you observe a similar shift in your field? How do you perceive the benefits? What elements are essential to maintain as we navigate this transition? Design is more than just shapes and forms; it’s about telling a story that resonates and inspires. With 3D design, you can bring your ideas to life with greater impact, creating immersive experiences that capture every detail. During Around 2023 we caught up with Nicholas Baker as he shared his innovative design process, highlighting how he leverages cutting-edge technologies, including VR, to elevate his storytelling. By embedding environmental context and walking us through each step of his iteration, he creates designs that are not just seen, but felt and experienced. Here's a few takeaways: 🎨 Context is Key: By incorporating environmental context into your designs, you can communicate your vision more effectively. Show your audience not just what your design looks like, but how it feels in its intended space. 🛠️ Iterative Journeys: Take your viewers through the step-by-step evolution of your designs. Share the journey from concept sketches to the final 3D model, highlighting the creative process and the decisions that shaped your work. 💬 Engage and Inspire: Storytelling in design helps you connect with your audience on a deeper level. It’s not just about the final product; it’s about the story behind it.
