The recent major IT outage affecting Windows users highlights the ongoing importance of cybersecurity, especially when dealing with sensitive biometric data. While not a cyberattack itself, this incident serves as a reminder from our State of Biometrics Report (SoBR) that “Cybersecurity is keeping us awake at night.” Almost every day, we see new stories about cyberattacks, data breaches, scams, vulnerabilities, and ransomware. This concern aligns with the theme of our SoBR which covered biometrics, cybersecurity, and privacy – “The Good, the Brazen, or the Breached?”   ➡️ In October, our Congress will feature the launch of the next State of Biometrics Report, along with continued discussions on cybersecurity, digital identity, AI, and more. Register now to join us: bit.ly/BICongress24 ➡️ The full State of Biometrics Report is available to Institute members. To learn more about the report, visit bit.ly/sobr-23 ➡️ In addition to these invaluable insights non-members can access many free good practice resources including the Three Laws of Biometrics at bit.ly/biometric-tools #biometrics #cybersecurity #privacy #datasecurity #AI #digitalidentity #responsiblebiometrics #BICongress

Our Chairman and Director, Jakob Dam Glynstrup attended the XXI CLARCIEV meeting in São Paulo alongside member countries from Latin America and the Caribbean earlier today. Participating in a digital identity panel, he addressed a critical question that lies at the heart of online interactions: “How do you know who you are dealing with online?” He emphasised the importance of the Three Laws of Biometrics as a starting point for the responsible implementation of biometric systems and discussed the Good Practice Framework which helps even those with limited knowledge of biometrics procure, upgrade or expand a system. Key takeaways: 🔹 Biometrics can play a role in helping ensure we’re dealing with the right people online, but responsible implementation is crucial. 🔹 You need to get it right, right from the start and the Biometrics Institute has many good practice resources to help navigate the world of biometrics, and digital identity. Information on best practices for biometrics, including the Three Laws of Biometrics, is available from the Institute’s website at bit.ly/biometric-tools. For anyone interested in learning more about the technology and its implementation, the Biometrics Essentials learning tool is also freely available in English and Spanish at https://lnkd.in/drzrJweJ. We look forward to collaborating further on these important topics with the CLARCIEV council and thank you for the invitation to take part in this important meeting.   #CLARCIEV2024 #responsiblebiometrics #digitalidentity #bordersecurity #artificialintelligence

Government, industry and NFPs gathered to discuss how to design your biometric strategy at our US Strategy Forum in Washington DC. John Boyd’s keynote provided an update on the National Academies of Sciences Face Study & Executive Order 14074. This was followed by presentations focusing on designing your biometric strategy and insights into how the Good Practice Framework and the Three Laws of Biometrics can work in practice. The forum was divided into three insightful sessions based on the Three Laws of Biometrics covering policy, process, and technology. The opening session on policy included engaging roundtable debate with industry leaders discussing practical solutions. The second session focussed on processes and biometric good practice implementations and challenges. The final session explored the third law of biometrics – technology, with delegates investigating solutions and future requirements before open dialogue. “The audience was engaged from the opening to closing,” said our CEO Isabelle Moeller. It was a fantastic day for advancing the responsible use of biometrics. A big thank you to everyone who joined us for the day’s thought-provoking discussions on designing effective biometric strategies. Special thanks to our sponsors Aware, Inc. (Platinum sponsor) and FaceTec, Inc. (Gold sponsor).   If you joined us at the US #BiometricsStrategy Forum, let us know what you thought.   You can also contact David Roberts to voice your support for responsible biometrics, and Shelley Bryen to discuss sponsorship and exhibition opportunities at our upcoming events: 🇬🇧 22-23 October 2024: Biometrics Institute Congress, London – bit.ly/BICongress24 🇦🇺 4 December 2024: Showcase Australia, Canberra – bit.ly/showcase-au24 🇳🇱 24-25 April 2025: ID@Borders and Future of Travel Conference, Amsterdam – bit.ly/IDB2025 We look forward to seeing you all again soon! #policy #dataprivacy #datasecurity #digitalidentity #ThreeLawsofBiometrics #responsiblebiometrics #biometrics #AI
