The following post contains major spoilers for Mayans MC‘s series finale. Proceed with caution!
Across its five seasons, Mayans MC has warmly embraced its Sons of Anarchy origins, bringing back familiar faces and meaningfully weaving the Sons into Mayans storylines for years. It was only logical, then, to wonder if Mayans might end the same way Sons did, with the death of its tortured protagonist.
But whereas Jax Teller more or less went out on his own terms, serenely guiding his motorcycle into a head-on collision with a semi truck, EZ Reyes’ death during Wednesday’s series finale was significantly more twisted and brutal. And given Mayans‘ penchant for violence, it’s really saying something to call EZ’s demise one of the series’ most stomach-turning scenes.
First, let’s revisit the lead-up to EZ’s death: Earlier in the episode, he had successfully led the Mayans through the final stretch of their war with the Sons. After EZ delivered a rousing speech to his brothers, he and the Mayans and the Grim Bastards descended upon a club where the Sons were partying, and they proceeded to shoot, beat or stab every Sons member they could grab. EZ took the liberty of finishing off big, bad Isaac, who he chased outside and threw down a stairwell.
“This can’t be it,” Isaac begged as EZ stood over him. “There has to be more. I’m not ready for this to be over.” But EZ didn’t care. He shot Isaac in the head, then urinated on his body, just as Isaac had done to a Mayan casualty at the start of this season.
Later, after the Mayans had celebrated their victory, Angel and EZ took a bike ride together, for the first time in a long time. Angel told EZ that, with the Sons war officially behind them, he planned to leave the club life behind and go someplace where he and Maverick could be safe. “I have to live. For him,” Angel said, and EZ, through his sadness, understood.
That night, EZ, Angel and the rest of Santo Padre’s head members gathered around the club table, where Angel tearfully announced his decision to the group. Tranq also suggested patching in Nestor, for the way he put the club above all else and handled the situation with Jess — the presumed rat — earlier in the season. Everyone at the table agreed, and Nestor was brought in to receive his official kutte…
…but the celebration was cut short when Gilly suddenly grabbed EZ and got him in a chokehold, while Nestor and the others held Angel back. Bishop — who had gotten a visit earlier in the episode from Kody/Katie, delivering a message from Creeper — revealed that they all finally knew EZ was the real rat, and they didn’t believe for a second that Angel wasn’t aware of EZ’s deal with the feds. So, in an especially gut-wrenching moment, Angel was handed EZ’s knife, and Bishop demanded that he prove “you’re loyal to the club over blood. If you wanna f—king walk out of here, prove your loyalty to the f—king badge.”
What happened next was tough to watch. EZ seemed to quickly come to terms with his own imminent death, insisting to Angel that this was the only way he and Maverick could truly escape the club lifestyle. “You’ve gotta be strong, Angel,” EZ said through tears. “It’s OK, Angel. Look at me. Tell your boy about me. And you tell him about Mom. Go, and don’t come back, OK? It’s gonna be OK. I’ll miss you.”
And Angel — who had a gun to his head this entire time — did what needed to be done, grabbing EZ by the shoulder and driving the knife into his stomach. He apologized the whole way through, and after Angel stepped back, the rest of the men in the room each approached and took their turn stabbing EZ, until it was finally done, and EZ was gone. Yeesh.
To put an extra-tragic cherry on top of this stabby sundae, Bottles then headed to EZ’s trailer, where Sofía had been waiting all day to tell EZ (oh, gosh) that she was pregnant. But her smile faded when she instead saw Bottles at the door, holding an assault rifle that he used to shoot Sofía instantly. (We were also briefly led to believe that Sally the pitbull had been shot, too. She wasn’t, but that was an unforgivable misdirect.)
In an episode-ending montage, we later saw that Bishop had taken EZ’s place as Santo Padre president — the role he’d wanted all along. “Now. Back to business,” Bishop said as he lit a cigarette, and the others around the table — Guero, Bottles (no longer a prospect, after what he did to Sofía), Tranq, Nestor and Gilly — looked around forlornly.
There was a bright side, though: Angel got out, after all. He and Maverick looked out on the ocean together in the episode’s final scene — and as Angel stared at the water, we found that he’d covered up the Mayans club name on his back tattoo.
Whew! And that’s not all. Elsewhere in the finale…
* In a personal triumph that ended up feeling a bit like a footnote, given the episode’s other carnage, Emily fatally shot Miguel and the family’s bodyguard, who she’d discovered was responsible for killing her sister. And thanks to Emily’s months of planning, and those strategically placed security cameras in her home, she looked blameless in both deaths. Instead, the cameras only showed Miguel collapsing (with the shooter juuust out of frame), followed by Luis collapsing (with the shooter juuust out of frame), followed then by a screaming Emily appearing on camera to hold Miguel’s body. For now, at least, the cops suspected it was a murder-suicide at Luis’ hand.
* With Miguel dead, Deputy Assistant yadda yadda Patricia Devlin was no longer able to put Potter in handcuffs as she’d hoped. Instead, Potter and Kody worked together to bring down the Mayans, and the ATF burst into the Santo Padre clubhouse at the end of the episode, surrounding the building with cop cars and guns and helicopters. “The levee will hold,” Potter cryptically told Kody. “For now.”
* Alvarez’s wife gave birth to a baby boy, and Bishop paid Alvarez a sweet visit at the hospital, where Alvarez worried that he won’t live long enough to see his new son get older than a teenager. “You think I’m doing the right thing, primo?” Alvarez asked Bishop. “I think, for the first time in our lives,” Bishop began, “I know for absolutely f—kin’ sure that one of us is doing the right thing.”
* And finally, Leti procured a handgun from one of her pals and planned to use it to kill “every motherf—ker in a Mayan kutte,” feeling strongly that both Coco and Hope’s deaths could be traced back to the Mayans. But when she arrived at Santo Padre HQ that night, she approached EZ’s trailer (after Sofía had been shot) and could tell something was wrong. Fortunately, sweet Sally had survived the gunfire, and she trotted up to Leti, who decided to put Sally in her car and drive off. Instead of seeking vengeance on the Mayans, she returned to the all-female Broken Saints club, looking appropriately contrite. Plus, Sally gets to roam around with other dog friends now, which is the happy ending we really needed.

Was JR Bourne not available to play “Issac”? They made sure you really didn’t get a good look at him, -his face was always at an angle. JR Bourne has been such a great villain I would have thought they’d give him a showier face-off with EZ, unless, like I said, he wasn’t available and they looped his one bit of dialogue.
I wasn’t even sure if that was Issac. I didn’t think it looked like him.
I went back and watched the next showing. I’ll correct myself, -it’s definitely Bourne turning and running away. I think that when EZ caught up with him it was a stunt double, so they could have him throw Isaac down the stairs in one unbroken shot. When EZ walks out to see Isaac crawling away, that’s Bourne. It’s just an odd angle.
Totally wrong having Angel kill EZ and they all should have known about Ez coming out of prison after one year that he could a snitch. Very disappointed how it ends!!
Yeah, it was lame. But they were in desperation mode. SOA was a vivid Hamlet. So why don’t we conclude with Caesar? Blah, blah, blah …
EZ was too smart to be in a gang. I watched the first few seasons and then just had to quit because not a single character on the entire show wasn’t guilty. They all should have died
Emily didn’t care that her husband threw acid on a child to get information about the kidnapping of her son. She stayed with him.
Not a single redeeming quality in any character.
Since Sutter was forced to leave – this show took a turn for the worst. It didn’t have to end like this and certainly didn’t have the class and style that Sutter brought to SOA and the beginning of Mayans. Very brutal ending and am so very disappointed in the show.
Great final episode gonna miss the show.
Ending was not eventful, so much for family, bad ending to a great show ..
#1 rule in the MC is don’t be a rat. You aren’t a brother anymore if you do that.
It’s been so long, I can’t remember did EZ actually do any snitching or betraying? Didn’t really do any in the final series.
Double dealing’s kind of a norm in the club world. Could have even been strategically useful.
I wish they hadn’t killed Sophia so that Maverick could have a cousin as the Latin Culture extended family members are the culture and would match the Sons of JAX FROM SOA
I don’t get why Sophia was murdered!! WHY??
Loose end.
sofia did not deserve to die.. like what the hell was that.. such mixed emotions on this entire episode..this entire season was just insane. issac so deserved what he got .. he was just plain evil..
angel should have gotten sofia and left with her … this show had so many upsetting scenes…
Sofia? His brother’s girl! No he should go get Nails and hit the bricks! You remember Nails don’t you?
I think their reasoning is because she was EZ’s associate and couldn’t be left out after his murder to come back to either wreak vengeance and/or go to the feds about everything she might know. She definitely didn’t deserve to die, but the club thinking doesn’t care about deserve or not.
Neither do I!!!
I’m glad she was offed. If he went so should she. I cheered. Man, if I could live like this. Awesome.
Such a sad ending to a great show. As the show continued week after week everything seemed to be spiraling out of control. Need to have a continuation that brings justice to Potter the one man in the US government’s force who was truly behind so much of the chaos and pain involved in the show. Please someone step up.
I was totally upset that Potter seems to have gotten away with his crimes, backstabbing and murders. If the show needed to put so much emphasis on EZ being found out and having some form of Karma judging him in the end why in the hell did Potter look like he was a hero at least as far as law enforcement is concerned.
Potter should also have lost everything, his career, family, any amount of respectability he had with the agency all this he needed to lose. Plus seeing him in prison being confronted by Mayans and others who he screwed over then finally watching him die like the coward he was.
I, too, was hoping for something bad to happen to Potter.
I think a lot of us were hoping he’d get what was he deserved.
Potter survives. Bummer.
I think you missed the part where the ATF stormed the clubhouse and all the gunshots happened . . . everyone in there is most likely dead. Not a one of the club members wouldn’t have shot back, and the ATF would be shooting to kill. That was what Potter wanted, after all. All of them dead.
.
So that’s actually EVERYONE dead except Angel (who had blacked out his tattoos and clearly fled to Mexico) and Alvarez, who had been out for some time. The end of Santo Padre.
.
I’m just happy Leti lived. And got a happy ending of sorts. The Broken Angels don’t know she betrayed them to SoA, right? They’re not going to shoot her? It’s weird how Leti of all people became one of my favorite characters in the entire show, but she did.
left you wondering.. i was like omg – did they just start to fire . at first i thought no one was in there – did they fire back were they just fired on immediately .. this entire season was just INSANE
My guess is the Mayans fired first. None of them were about to be taken alive.
I couldn’t stand her – character and actor. Her acting was awful and her voice, easy to imitate, was annoying.
Sutter is an asshole for allowing
Potter to live!!!!!!!!
A real creep, twisted SOB like him, causing chaos for the Sons of Anarchy series, then resurfacing in the Mayans, deserved a horrible death.
Old bikers like me can only assume Sutter is a narc type himself.
Sutter left the show four years ago. Whatever his original plan for the show was, this wasn’t it. But, that’s okay. This worked out pretty great too.
Did Angel ever find out about his sons mother?
No…he didn’t.
Sutter was fired a few seasons ago, he had no role in this finale
Potter is the Man {Capital M.} He represents the morally corrupt US government, which is a significant subtext to the entire show. (Pay attention to the title sequence.) Of course he is going to live. That’s a big point of how Mexican-Americans are treated. The Man always gets his way.
Why kill sofia
Loose end and most likely so that baby won’t grow up to take revenge an few decades later because his/her dad was murdered.
she did not deserve to die. i was hoping to see her recovering somewhere.
I don’t believe Sutter had anything to do with it. EZ had to die. He was a rat plain and simple and for him to think no one would ever know once he set up Creeper to be killed was ludicrous. I think when the ATF went in, there were as many shots as there were members, so good bye Mayans. (at least that chapter anyway. Happy sweet Sally made it. :-D
I just hate the Angel never found out what really happened to Luisa.
I always liked EZ until he killed Gaby, his exgirlfriend. I think it was then that his character turned dark and he would eventually be killed in the end. I wish Angel would have found out about Louisa’s fate but also want to believe that he finds out that Emily’s son is Maverick’s cousin… Great ending!
I felt Bishop saying to EZ “You’re not the only one who reads Shakespeare MF” was a direct message from Elgin to Kurt. So glad Sally survived.
Exactly – and yes, Sally lived! ;)
I wish that Emily had waited until after Miguel met with the Dana Delany character so Potter could have gotten it. How they let him and that druggie Katie live, I’ll never understand. EZ should have killed her.
omg i hated potter.. as far as ez well he did the unthinkeable… being a rat to the feds as well as all the other things he did.. omg when he killed his gf was insane and now sofia – she did not deserve that at all… i wish angel would have gotten her and left with her
yes that was crazy when adelita killed her .. this entire season was just crazy…
Mayans was a shadow compared to Sons. Maybe when Elgin James took over it changed. Too many hanging threads. Why have Miguel know about his father, and drop it? Surely opening that up with the bothers would have been good. I had hopes that Potter would face some retribution for his acts. I also thought killing EZ’s girlfriend was over the top. Just not a clear story from beginning, unlike Sons.
Issac went out to easy. He didn’t seem like a runner and no big long crazy speech! That dude loved to talk!
Was hoping that Angel and Miguel had talked. Angel saw the papers/pictures in his hands at the funeral and nothing came of that. Such a missed opportunity for some great scenes between the 3 brothers.
I wish Angel would have saved Sofia and took her with him. Her death was pointless and for shock value.
Emily does not deserve a happily ever after. She was just as bad as her husband.
I did love the talk between Bishop and Alvarez.
I felt this final season was slow. Ended the way I expected
Man it didn’t have to end like that just so fukin disappointing an wen did eazy snitch an for what I seen him talk to no fukin cops
This was a great finale, not sure why it is getting some hate. I’ll miss the SOA universe but this was a solid way to end it.
Slow and boring = Horrible
I knew that the Mayan finale had to be with EZ being killed, but it was sad anyway.
I was glad that Angel got to get away but to what expense. Now Angel and Maverick will live long great lives. At one point we thought that Sofia would survive the bloodbath and raise her baby together with Angel and Maverick.
Great show, will miss it!
