The CW is keeping Max Mitchell and Cole Ellis on the case, renewing Wild Cards for a second season, TVLine has learned.
Season 2 will span 13 episodes — up from the 10 of Season 1 — and will premiere in 2025. (See The CW’s full Fall 2024 schedule here.)
Season-to-date, Wild Cards averaged 892,000 total viewers and a 0.1 demo rating (with Live+7 playback). Out of the eight new or acquired dramas The CW has aired this TV season, it trailed only the now-cancelled Walker in total audience and ranked No. 3 in the demo.
A co-production with Canada’s CBC Television, the romantic procedural stars Vanessa Morgan (Riverdale) as Max, a con artist who finds herself unexpectedly solving crimes alongside demoted detective Cole, played by Giacomo Gianniotti (Grey’s Anatomy). Fifth Season handles international distribution on the series.
“We are thrilled to order a second season of The CW’s breakout series Wild Cards,” said Liz Wise Lyall, head of scripted programming at The CW. “Wild Cards has clearly captured the imagination of our viewers thanks to exhilarating storytelling and the crackling chemistry between Vanessa and Giacomo. We are confident Wild Cards is the kind of smart and sexy blue-sky drama that could continually build its audience for years.”
Wild Cards‘ 10-episode first season ended with Max and Ellis nabbing a high-profile smuggler, earning Max her freedom, Ellis his job back, and a massively reduced prison sentence for Max’s father, played by Jason Priestley (Beverly Hills, 90210). But that’s actually an oversimplification of the finale’s events. The smuggler also happened to be Max’s estranged husband Olivier, and Ellis discovered that this was all part of Max’s plan from the beginning, including swapping the treasure with a fake and skipping town.
But one last bombshell reveal sent Max running back to her former (and perhaps future?) partner — she knows who killed his brother.
“I hope [the killer is] Curtis Moorfield, the basketball player we met in Episode 2, because that would bring my boyfriend back to set,” Morgan told TVLine of the character played by her real-life boyfriend James Karnik. “I was like, ‘Babe, if you were the killer, you’d come back and be with me!’”
As for where Max and Ellis stand as we head into Wild Cards‘ second season, Morgan says, “Max does genuinely care about him. The fact that she even went back [proves that]. She was supposed to be on a plane. She could have been halfway around the world by then. But she came back to tell him who killed his brother. A person with no feelings for someone wouldn’t risk their life and risk getting arrested to tell that information. So we’ll see what happens.”
Wild Cards‘ renewal comes on the heels of some disappointing news at The CW: Jared Padalecki’s Walker has been cancelled after four seasons, while Canadian series The Spencer Sisters will not be back for Season 2.

Awesome! Great series I think. The 2 characters mesh well together and great storyline themes too. Happy it got renewed.
Kudos to the makeup department for transforming both characters into the most attractive couple since Gable and Vivian Leigh!
Is son of a critch and children ruin everything continuing on the cw? I liked those 2
They’ve both been renewed in Canada. Critch won’t air until January like usual.
Children Ruin Everything has a 16 episode season that is being split into 2 parts.
No clue if CW will continue airing them.
How about Family Law?
This show is the most underrated show of 2024 so far. Such a fun show.
Totally agree. Looked forward to it every week.
Yes, agree! Just a great show with great characters. So glad it’s renewed.
Yes. I love this show and the cliffhanger was predictable but interesting. Any news about Sight unseen?
Yay… I can’t wait to see more about Ellis and Max 😍
Can’t forget Marc the cat!!! 🥰
It deserves to be in a better network or streaming services. The CW is trash and needs to close down.
Love Wild Cards. Great cast. Great chemistry. Interesting story lines. Can’t wait!
Good decision but maybe you can also save Family Law
Global in Canada renewed Family Law for season 4. Whether CW decides to air it I don’t know.
Family Law doesn’t need saving, it’s a hit in Canada and on the CW. They’re in the midst of shooting the next season right now and it’ll probably debut on the CW next summer.
I may grudgingly tune into CW just to watch this great show
Great. Love this show 😉
⬆️ Who’s a happy camper ? ?
⬆️
This guy!!!! 😊
Great news! Not sure why this took so long, but glad they were able to make it work. This is the only show on CW worth watching. Looking forward to seeing how they resolve the cliffhanger and repair their friendship.
Why it took so long is because it’s a CW co-production w/ Canada’s CBC, which is its home network. The main decision to renew rests on them. Since they renewed it, CW can renew it too.
And CBC just put out their press release for their 2024-2025 programming slate today.
Great that this entertaining series finally has been renewed! Not to mention CW’s Sullivan’s Crossing.
Wildcards is my favorite of tv entertainment. So happy Wildcards is on track for new episodes.
Now, let’s renew Critch.
I’m happy to hear this good news. I really enjoy the chemistry between Max and Ellis as they go about solving crime. Jason Priestley is icing on the cake!👍
Should’ve cancelled the show
Yay!!! I really enjoyed it.
Love Wilcards glad it got renewed
I like this show. Renew Sight Unseen.
Fun show. Does CTV have any cop shows that could be aired in the US during the summer similar in tone to Rookie Blue. Still miss McSwarek!!!
CBC has Allegiance which has Enrico Colantoni in a supporting role. It has been renewed for a 2nd season.
Not similar in tone but darker and griitier. 19-2. Excellent ctv Montreal police drama. Only lasted 4 seasons. But very underrated. Not sure why it never got more attention. I think it’s streaming somewhere but if the CW dug into the vaults for a cop drama that should he the one!
Yes! Such a great show. The chemistry amongst the cast is fantastic.
Happy about the renewal. I am surprised that Spencer Sisters was cancelled, I wonder if that was CTV’s choice or the CW?
Love this show! Miss him from Grey’s. But happy he has found a new home. The two of them have great chemistry and love Mark too!
So excited! Love this show!
