The prayers of Warrior Nun fans have been answered: Executive producer Dean English has announced that the cancelled Netflix series will return as a trilogy of movies.
English thanked fans for their support before sharing the news: “I am very happy to announce that Warrior Nun is coming back as a trilogy of motion pictures. Once again, a trilogy of feature films. Three.”
Due to the ongoing Hollywood writers and actors strikes, English said he can’t confirm anything about which writers or actors are involved in the movies, but he did offer this tease: “Some may ask, ‘Does this perhaps infer that there’s going to be a universe being launched of Warrior Nun, which could expand into films and TV series following characters that we already know?’ The answer to that question is yes. And there will be more details in the future.”
English did not mention any involvement of Netflix in the movies, and sources have previously told TVLine that any follow-up project would likely not land on Netflix. It’s still not clear where the trilogy of movies will be released, either in theaters or via another streaming service. (TVLine has reached out to Netflix for comment.)
Warrior Nun follows the supernaturally powered Ava (played by Alba Baptista) and the Sister-Warriors of the OCS (Order of the Cruciform Sword) as they search for a way to defeat the angel, Adriel, as he attempts to build his following into the dominant religion on the planet. It was cancelled in December after two seasons on Netflix, despite Season 2 ranking in the Top 5 on Netflix’s U.S. ranking of streaming originals during its first week of release.
Creator and showrunner Simon Barry teased a continuation in June, tweeting: “Today I’m happy to officially report that because of your combined voices, passion and amazing efforts, Warrior Nun will return and is going to be more EPIC than you could imagine. More details to come! SOON!”
Will be interesting to see who has committed to release three movies.
Even more interesting would be knowing that the audience is really there by Netflix releasing the real viewership numbers.
As a distributor or someone financing, I would want to know those numbers to have an idea that the ROI is worth it.
It really doesnt sound like he has a distributor/streamer partner/etc it sounds more like that because of the fanbase’s incessant campaign he managed to secure financing to make them and how they get distributed will come later.
But I could be wrong. Though if he had partnered with any of the other big streamers (Discovery, Amazon, Comcast, Disney, Apple) he’d have come right out and said it. So the question now is did he get financing to make 3 theatrical films that will eventually get sold to a streamer or did he get financing to make 3 tv movies?
Even though this is good news for the fans, of which I am one, until we get some details, it’s all a little vague. Are these theatrical releases? I doubt any studio would agree to 3 guaranteed films without seeing how the first one does.
Also, 3 films would be about 6-7 hours long, which in essence is a shorter season of TV shows. This makes more sense for a streaming service as opposed to a theatrical release.
And what service? Does Netflix still own the rights? Did they sell them? What happens to the first two seasons? Did Netflix agree to a wrap up season 3 broken up into 3 parts?
Let’s hope these strikes are resolved quickly and fairly so all involved can get going on these projects, whatever they may be.
Plus, I have read that the show’s creator won’t be involved with the films, so I’m a little worried.
I too hope the strikes are resolved quickly, so that these projects can move forward.
I wonder if one of the smaller streamers picked it up? Because they’re guaranteed a substantial group of new subscribers. This show’s fans are the kind that are 100% committed.
I’m very curious why this was downvoted. Was it by fans of the show who want it on one of the bigger streamers?
That could happen, but I’m hoping a major studio picks them up, so that we et exclusive theatrical releases.
I’ll believe it when a streaming service or studio is attached.
Don’t know if the fans being committed makes a difference if it’s too small a number. Shows get saved and somehow lose viewers. I personally liked the show and wouldn’t be surprised if maybe a streamer like Peacock picked it up. They need subscribers and it might be a good fit
This is amazing !!!! But please please 🙏🏻 make sure Alba Batista will return. She was Awsome and should be the first actor rewarded and brought back bar known. As well as all of the other actor who played a big part they all deserve high praise in contributing to their roles . And there is a part of me that maybe bring back some characters that died because I think all who watched believes those actors where great as well . I hope what I have put down gets looked at seriously . Thank you good luck !!!!!
And who knows? This might lead to more things like spin-offs as well as a whole universe!
Believe it when you see it.
Same here.
whiff of BS…they are trying so hard to keep it relevant.
Very much doubt any studio would commit to this with all the uncertainty atm.
Trio of movies for a cancelled Netflix flop? Lol, I’m sure.
This! I was always very surprised that this show was being saved in in the first place. But now Im even more shocked that someone would commit to three movies of a show that was cancelled for a reason (probably didnt attract many viewers). Strong online presence doesnt mean a lot of people watched it.
We’ll see how it goes i guess. And great for the fans.
The movies may act as a semi-reboot of the franchise, as a way to entice average movie-goers. They are several different ways they could do that.
I mean, this is all about wording, right? “Warrior Nun gets to wrap up it’s storylines with three feature-length episodes on Netflix” isn’t as sexy as saying “we’re making three films!”.
But we don’t know Netflix is even doing it.
Netflix won’t be involved from what I understand.
Three movies is better than nothing.
Aww yay! This was a fun show.
Can’t wait to see what they do. I hope all three movies get picked up by a major studio.
Ok, can you get Shotgun Mary back? Like please!!
Awesome, this was a great show, I don’t know why Netflix canceled it. For a show with very little to no advertisement, it did very well in the ratings, had they let more people know about it I don’t think it would have been canceled. Even though I’ll miss the series, I’m definitely looking forward to the three movies!
I think the first movie they do should act as a semi-reboot of the franchise to entice average movie-goers. That way, people who are not familiar with the material can get into it.
While this is good news, I’m disappointed that it won’t return as a TV show.
Hopefully, this will find a major Hollywood studio where these films can get a proper exclusive theatrical release. I hope that they do lead to this becoming a major franchise that includes TV shows & movies. Hopefully, this means that the first 2 seasons of the show will be available on physical release too eventually as well.
Why not a third and final season? A trilogy of movies for a Netflix series with poor viewership seems highly suspect (even as a watcher).
Why not multiple seasons of the show & a series of movies?
You get what you get and you don’t get upset. –Mgmt.
