Bittersweet news for fans of The Witcher: The fantasy drama has officially been renewed for Season 5, but it will be the show’s last.
Netflix broke the news in an X post on Thursday, which revealed that not only has production begun on Season 4, but “Season 5 is coming to bring this epic series to a fitting conclusion.”
The Witcher wrapped its third season in July 2023, which also marked the end of Henry Cavill’s run as Geralt of Rivia. Liam Hemsworth will take over the role when the show returns for Season 4, which does not yet have a premiere timetable.
“After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out Season 3, the new season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri who are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other,” according to Netflix‘s official synopsis of Season 4. “If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire — and finding one another again.”
Anya Chalotra (Yennefer), Freya Allan (Ciri) and Joey Batey (Jaskier) are all confirmed to return for Season 4, while new cast members include Laurence Fishburne (black-ish), Danny Woodburn (Seinfeld), Sharlto Copley (Powers) and James Purefoy (The Following).
The Witcher, which first arrived on Netflix in 2019, is based on the beloved novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, which have also been adapted into a popular video game series. Does Season 5 feel like a suitable stopping point for the show?
5 seasons and 40 episodes for Netflix is the equivalent of 20 seasons and 420 episodes in broadcast. No need to feel ashamed.
I’m ok with that. I always want more but I think a them knowing when it ends offers a greater chance to end it well. Also, they can totally plan spin-offs and movies
It’s been a while since I read the books, but isn’t this roughly in line with the series length? You do one season of short stories which is essentially two books. Then you break the 5 books into 4 seasons, (very doable as the books kinda dragged between the big moments.) I don’t see this as a cancellation as much as a conclusion to the natural arc.
I would be curious if they decide to go beyond the books in movie form, and even if they go into the game territory? They would need to work with CD project Red to get licenses, but it could very interesting to see game 1 in movie form. Preferably not animated.
It appears seasons four and five are covering the last two novels in the series: “The Tower of Swallow” and “The Lady of the Lake.”
correction: The Tower of Swallows with an “s”
They don’t seem to put a lot of confidence in their new leading character.
At least there will be a real conclusion (I hope).
Pretty sure there’s nothing bittersweet for an ‘fan.’ I expect a pretty short comment chain given those whom gave up any interest, long ago. (Slow morning for me 😉)
Netflix sure doesn’t seem to have a lot of confidence in the show anymore. I thought I read a report saying that seven seasons were planned. But this isn’t surprising given that Fraya Allen will become a movie star with the new “Planet of the Apes” film coming out next month. But it’s still a shame, this is being cut short,. They could continue this for many more season now they have recast the lead, but this is typical Netflix.
Wasn’t 5 seasons the plan they set out from the start?
No, I remember reading a report that said seven seasons were planned. & that was prior to Henry Cavill leaving.
Lost interest when I found out Henry Cavill was leaving. Didn’t even finish watching Season 3. And no real urge to go back and finish it.
Never heard of it before
well at least we’re getting two more
Meh. Show went downhill after season 1, so no big loss here.
This show isn’t the Witcher anyways, more like the Ciri and Yennifer show. Cavill left for a reason.
Indeed. The last season I saw was the second one, which was hardly recognisable from the novel it was supposedly adapting. Ciri being possessed and going on a killing streak, what the heck?!
I just can’t see it working without Henry Cavill not plating his role as Geralt. Maybe if he died and another Witcher took his place, but another actor playing the same role? I’ll watch, but if it doesn’t work I’ll re-read the books. I don’t know why Henry is not playing the role, at first it was a scheduling conflict but I heard that project fell through leaving him open again, if it was money, maybe they should have paid him and wrapped the show with season 4, but I can’t imagine Liam is working for less. I hope it works, this series has been a favorite of mine, I guess I’ll wait and see.
Sorry for the typo’s and errors in the first sentence. And originally 7 seasons were speculated, but 5 really does fit with the book series better. And most of you are correct, knowing for sure when it will end does give them the ability to finish the series properly, it sure is better than what happens with the cancellations Netflix is becoming famous for, to many shows ending on a cliffhanger only to find out they are cancelled with no explanation.
I’m also glad the show will finish properly without a cliffhanger. And I am a bit annoyed Cavil couldn’t suck it up for two more seasons… I think most agree it wasn’t money so much as he was nerd-mad they didn’t make the show ‘more like the books.’ Having read one book, I can understand why the author called them difficult to adapt, and there’s a LOT I’m glad they changed and left out…but I’m also somewhat sympathetic to the idea that they didn’t do as much with it as they could have — just in the depth of the characters and political allegory. But I felt like they really updated Geralt in season two, gave him more dialog like Cavill wanted, so I still don’t really get what the beefy man’s beef was. Maybe it was a little bit he got scammed into thinking he was playing Superman again.
(It’ll be interesting to see how his ride or dies feel about his Warhammer. It’s one thing to yell that he is the best nerd ever and if they’d just make the show HIS way it’d be great, and it’ll be another to see him have more control and actually be accountable for all the inevitable things the hater nerds will hate. There’s nothing that crowd loves more than putting a guy on a pedestal and then ripping him down.)
Laurence Fishburne?! When is S4 premier? I will miss Cavill but I love show.
Season four is “now officially in production” so I would expect at least a year. AT LEAST. Netflix LOVES sitting on stuff. I’ve been waiting for a release date for Star Trek Prodigy season two for months and that’s so finished that a French channel mistakenly released the whole thing like six weeks ago. And, just, crickets from Netflix.
Do you know why after 3 rd season someone was very upset and mad at witcher show? Was it bad or because the main character was killed off?
It is on Netflix and I don’t have a streaming.
Netflix seems averse to actually adapting the things they are supposedly adapting. That’s why.
I miss it already ….Damn 😪
