It’s curtain call for Schmigadoon!
Apple TV+ has cancelled the musical satire after two seasons, TVLine has confirmed. The news comes eight months after the release of the May 3 finale, which earned a TVLine reader grade of “A.”
“I am sad to share that Apple will not be moving forward with Season 3 of Schmigadoon!” series co-creator Cinco Paul shared on Instagram Thursday. “The season is written (including 25 new songs) but we unfortunately won’t be making it. Such is life.
“I want to thank everyone involved with the show, our incredible cast and crew and writers, our wonderful supporters at Broadway Video, Universal and Apple, for everything they did to make it happen. It’s a miracle we even got two seasons, honestly, and I’m so grateful we did,” he said. “And to all the fans of the show out there, thank you with all of my heart. Your love and support has meant so much, and the fact that you connected with our show, that it brought you some joy, means the world to me. This was tough news to get, but the optimist in me is convinced it’s not the end of Schmigadoon… and maybe it’s even a happy beginning.”
Whereas Season 1 of Schmigadoon! closed on a cliffhanger — Melissa and Josh were about to cross the bridge, but still hadn’t reached the other side — the Season 2 finale offered a pretty definitive ending: After the sinister Octavius Kratt was killed via chandelier, Madam Frau took over the cabaret club and used her position to promote new and exciting talent such as Dr. Frank-N-Furter former Sgt. Rivera; attorney Bobby Flanagan teamed up with the Topher’s tribe to break up Kratt’s monopolies; lovebirds Topher and Jenny found use for their talents at Miss Codwell’s orphanage; and Codwell and Dooley went into business together. Heck, even the narrator, who was revealed to work for the leprechaun, got to decide his own fate, hitching himself to Sgt. Rivera.
With all those loose ends tied up, Melissa and Josh were free to leave Schmicago and return to New York City — but before they left, one final musical number warned them that happy endings don’t exist; there are only happy beginnings. What followed was a brief epilogue revealing that our central duo have a baby after years of struggling to conceive.
The star-studded ensemble included Cecily Strong, Keegan-Michael Key, Dove Cameron, Ariana DeBose, Jaime Camil, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Fred Armisen, Ann Harada, Jane Krakowski, Aaron Tveit, Titus’s Burgess, Patrick Page and Martin Short.
Are you sad to see Schmigadoon! go? Or were you satisfied with how things ended? Sound off in Comments.
Already written and still canceled, what a bummer. 2 and done seems to be a trend lately for streamers with this, Julia, OFMD, etc. All ones that I really enjoyed :(
Yes, Max in particular seems to be on a tear cancelling series after two seasons. It couldn’t possibly be because most shows guarantee actors a salary bump in Season 3, could it? Sounds exactly like the kind of cost-cutting maneuver that has made Zaslav the industry’s Public Enemy #1.
I loved this show. Sad to hear it’s all written and they canceled it anyway. Big mistake
Argh. I was looking forward to the 80s and 90s tributes. So much for Schmes Schmiserables and Schment.
Or SCHMAMMA MIA.
I was thinking Schminto the Woods, Schmess, Schmantum of the Opera, Schmeamgirls, and Schmunday in the Park with George.
SCHMATS!
Phantom of the Opera was already in the second season, the chandelier was a reference to it :)
Such a great show – clever concept and witty execution. Congrats to the talented creators and cast!
I will forever be grateful for Corn Pudding from Season 1 and Talk to Daddy from Season 2. Maybe it will get to live on at some point, but I am glad for the 2 seasons we got.
Don’t forget about “Lover’s Spat” from S1 also!
Huge bummer. Those songs were on repeat on my Spotify. I hope Apple will reconsider or it finds another home or another form to live on in.
Such a shame. This was must see series for me.
Aw, I was expecting it to get better and better. To bad we won’t get to see it
If they cancel “For All Mankind”, I’ pulling the plug on my subscription. It and Schmig… were the only multi-season shows I watch on the platform – everything else were one and dones and films.
Oh, no, that’s terrible news. I actually signed up for Apple just because of that show (and then discovered others) and was looking forward to season 3.
At least we’ll always have Corn Puddin’
Me too. Got to evaluate my subscription now to see if it’s worth it to keep.
I thought from the way season 2 ended, there was no plans for season 3. I don’t understand how is could be already written including the songs, If show was never officially renewed. Did they started writing without knowing if they even get renewed, or did AppleTv tell them they renew the show unofficially and then changed their mind? Either way it’s a shame all their work will be in vain now
I am so disappointed. I’d love to this. I hope since it’s already written maybe the third season will be picked up somewhere else.
So upset. Repeat-watch both seasons often whenever I need a lift. Dream ballet….
Very sad about Schmigadoon. It was great entertainment and brilliantly written both storywise and lyrically
This was my favorite show on Apple along with For All Mankind. Boo Apple!
Apple literally just *doubled* their subscription cost. They couldn’t give an acclaimed niche show ONE more season? Infuriating.
This is infuriating considering they recently doubled their subscription cost to pay for boring Scorcese vanity projects. Surely, there’s enough money around to justify a final season for a beloved and acclaimed niche show that’s already written.
I’d love to know which shows next season was going to pay tribute to
Season 2 definitely not as good as season 1, but still was looking forward to the season 3. Songs were so clever. Love the actors. Hoping some other network will pick it up.
I enjoyed s2 even more than s1, probably because I had a stronger connection to the original source material for s2.
I disagree. Season 2 was miles better to me. Maybe it’s just a preference of styles, but season 1 felt a little hokier. I found season 2 to be wittier and the characters more likeable, plus the songs far more memorable.
Such a shame, I do hope the show will get picked up somewhere else (HBO/cable maybe?). Even thought the finale was satisfying, I’m really curious what season 3 was going to be about and to see more of the talended performances we got to enjoy
What a shame! This show was creative and entertaining. I wish they would reconsider and film Season 3 since it’s already written. The show was unlike anything else on tv. It will be missed.
Nooooooooo! I loved that show! It was my one reason to keep Apple+. I’ll be over here singing sad songs to myself…
Brilliant show. Was looking foward to 3rd season. Apple keeps cancelling good shows
Booooo especially with all those songs already written. Boooooo
Ohhh, so disappointed. I’m hoping another streamer picks up this witty, quirky and hilarious show. Bring on Schming Awakening, Shment and Schmannie!
