Our Flag Means Death will not set sail again.
Max has cancelled the pirate comedy, starring Rhys Darby and executive producer Taika Waititi (as Stede Bonnet and Captain Blackbeard, respectively), after two seasons.
The news comes three months after the Season 2 finale, which dropped on Oct. 26 and earned an average TVLine reader grade of “B” (read our recap here).
“While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of Our Flag Means Death, we are so proud of the joyous, hilarious, and heartfelt stories that creator David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, Adam Stein, Antoine Douaihy, and the entire superb cast and crew brought to life,” a Max spokesperson tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We also thank the dedicated fans who embraced these stories and built a gorgeous, inclusive community surrounding the show.”
As HBO/Max boss Casey Bloys explained at a press event not two weeks after OFMD‘s Season 2 finale dropped, decisions on streaming series are informed by “how a show performs over a longer period of time than three weeks” (as is the case with linear programs). “We’re trying to figure out, does it make sense [to renew it]?” he said. “I don’t really have an answer at this point.”
Alas, now we have an answer.
In addition to Darby and Waititi, the OFMD cast included Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matthew Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, David Fane, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon and Leslie Jones. The cancellation caps its run at 18 episodes.

Noooo!! Terrible news.
Well that sucks, at least the season 2 finale can work as a series finale.
I LOVED this how, but at lease Season 2 ended with a logical conclusion. I will miss it, but it could have eneded on a major cliffhanger, and it it didn’t.
I love this show beyond measure, but I’m ok with this.
If they’d cancelled it after the first season I would have never gotten over it, but season 2 ended with them all in a good place.
Would I have loved to see more? Absolutely! But I’m very happy we got the show we did.
I never got around to watching this show, but the producer said something about Season 3 being the planned final season, and when you’re that close, I think the parent company should just let them have the damn season.
“The Babysitters Club” on Netflix had this same problem. 3 were planned, 2 were made.
Ugh. At least give us one more episode or movie to wrap up the cliffhanger!
I loved this show and really wanted to see a Season 3! What about the lady pirates? What about Leslie Jones? This show was SO much fun to watch! Such an unusual and surprising take on pirate life!!! I selfishly wanted more!!!
Pissed. So disappointing. Ugh.
One season. Thats all they needed. HBO should be ashamed!
One season more I mean
With Curb ending, Succession done, and this show being cancelled, I have no reason to renew my subscription to MAX once it expires. Keep up the good work Mr. Zaslav.
I’m really disappointed. I think the storyline for Izzy ruined it for a lot of people and that’s why season 2 didn’t perform the way it should have, but I had still hoped that we would get a season 3 to wrap things up (and maybe somehow, magically UNDO certain things with a crazy twist). This is such a unique and special show, it deserved to at least have a conclusion
I would have enjoyed a third season!
this is the one show that could be easily revived down the line as a series of movies as the world is so self-contained and specific with historical events/details. im good with 2 seasons but i hope they have a plan to produce 1-3 movies in the next years. would be easier on production schedule too. i hope new zealand doesn’t tear down the sets!!
😭 nooooooooo
One of the best shows in years with still lots of steam in it for more! Max doesn’t know what a good thing it has cancelling this one. Awful decision.
Well that’s just a terrible decision from HBO/Max! I would love to see another season of this quirky, heartwarming, inclusive and hugely entertaining show! I thought both seasons were brilliant and although season two ended in a good place, I would dearly love to find out where they would take the story in season 3!
