Oh dear, this is one dish that even Julia Child can’t salvage: Max has cancelled the biopic series Julia after two seasons, TVLine has confirmed.
“We are so honored to have partnered with Chris Keyser, Daniel Goldfarb and their masterful creative team and dynamic cast, led by Sarah Lancashire, as they cooked up Julia,” a Max spokesperson said in a statement. “Thanks to their beautiful work over two seasons of this heartful, sensual, and inspiring show, we can forever celebrate the incredible legacy of Julia Child.”
Lancashire starred as legendary chef Julia Child, who became a household name with her TV cooking series The French Chef, bringing gourmet cuisine to the masses. Frasier alum David Hyde Pierce co-starred as Julia’s husband Paul, with a supporting cast that included Bebe Neuwirth, Brittany Bradford, Fran Kranz, Fiona Glascott, and Robert Joy.
Julia debuted in March 2022 with an eight-episode freshman season, then returned for Season 2 in November with eight more episodes. The Dec. 21 season finale will now serve as a series finale as well. Max also cancelled the Taika Waititi pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death earlier this week.
Will you miss cooking up new dishes with Julia? Give us your thoughts on the cancellation news in the comments.
No! Loved this show. It was so much fun.
One more reason for me to cancel my subscription to Max.
Ok, David Hyde Pierce… you still have a job on another show if you want it!
Wow. Feeling lucky about The Gilded Age right now. I didn’t think Max would cancel this or (especially) OFMD. Wonder what’s going on over there.
I suspect this was some sort of getting even for renewing “Gilded Age.” They’re clearly not interested in quality programming if most of the cast is over 49.
This makes me not even want to bother to watch the 2nd season of Gilded Age if it meant losing Julia. I’ll stick with my British and Kiwi shows where the quality and acting is usually better. Obviously they would never air Vera, which is in its 13th series and the lead Brenda Blethyn (Vera) will be 78 next month. The same with Doc Martin, Shetland, Unforgotten or Annika, let alone
Last Tango in Halifax, all quality shows that stand the test of time.smdh
I was a fan ….I did think the Second season suffered from to much time in Europe and the FBI plot line.
Agree!
That was part of Julia Child’s story, but why quibble over facts. /s
MAX is why we can’t have good things (like Julia).
Boo!
Julia was a wonderful show & we are saddened it won’t be returning. We recently started watching in January & zipped right thru anxious for season 3. We recommended to friends to watch & they loved it too. Julia was just enjoyable! Well done to the cast and crew!
That was very clear from the extreme lack of promotion when this season started airing – and I do think season 2 was not as good as the first one. The cooking show was on for 10 seasons so I’ll doubt they’ll ever be able to cover all that but I’d gladly watch a third and final season. Too bad, I’m such a huge fan of anything Sarah Lancashire does.
Love Sarah–one of the best actors of our time. Hope she’s lands in something else soon.
I also noticed that I don’t think a single episode started with an ad for something else. They’re skippable, but they’re usually always there, so that wasn’t a good sign either.
oh no! loved loved loved this show! so good. A bit surprising it’s in its Top Ten list for weeks. Must mean nobody is watching max ar all.
Julia was wonderful in every way. The cast was perfect. Sarah Lancashire was so believable as Julia Child
Well this sucks. This was a well done show and the cast was great. It’s a shame it won’t get a proper ending. Was hoping to see another season.
Max dropped the ball with this one. It was a witty show and shame on them for not appreciating what they have. I already had to deal with cancelations last year of shows I watched to start the year like this.
BOOOO. This show was so fun and wonderful. :(
I don’t need to continue Max much longer. Julia was one show I really loved.
since they merged with discovery the majority of the shows I’ve been interested in has been canceled. figured this would happen.
At this point, do they still hace original series?
NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! I renewed my MAX subscription just to watch this show! It’s soooooo goooooood!!!! Some other streaming service needs to pick it up! Of all the stupid s*** that’s on TV, you cancel this excellent show???? What a travesty.
I saw it coming. After Max was cancelling things left and right, I figured Julia was on those lists. I’m glad we got a second season, which I will begin to promptly watch since Max removes the shows fast after dropping them.
Very disappointed, loved Julia. There are so few quality shows you can watch that are entertaining and well acted but not too intense, for those nights that you need something a bit more gentle
I think HBOMAX screwed up !! It was a fabulous show, well written and great actors .
Very disappointing in HBOMAX
We enjoy the series and I think Sarah Lancashire got real good essence of Julia Child.
I hate to see the series ending incompletely. What a shame.
Our Flag Means Death, and Julia were two very good shows (I didn’t watch either, but people whose opinions trust, both Pros and amateurs vouch for them, and that is good enough for me). But neither one was a watercooler hit, nor were they awards bait.
.
Any premium cable or streaming show that isn’t a huge hit or isn’t being nominated for many serious awards, well, any show not falling into one of these categories is done. It is done.
.
Many shows of this nature are probably picked up for two seasons at the outset. If they aren’t huge hits and/or winning awards, then the show won’t survive S2. So don’t get attached.
Between this and Our Flag Means Death… I hate max, I hate Zaslav, I hate it all.
Just finished the season 2 finale, and it was so great. Wanted to see them really develop the For Women show, along with all the other great things coming Alice’s way. Such a fantastic cast all around, this is such a shame.
NO! So bummed to hear this news–I’ve been eagerly anticipating a Season 3.
Why can’t studio/streamers give producers a year’s notice, so they can deliver a final season…..
Unbelievable! Great Show. I’m done with MAX!!!!
