Foundation will be back for another chapter. Apple TV+ has renewed the Lee Pace-led sci-fi series for Season 3, TVLine has learned.
“I’m thrilled Apple has given us the opportunity to continue chronicling [Isaac] Asimov’s pioneering galactic saga,” showrunner and executive producer David S. Goyer said in a statement Tuesday. “This time, the stakes for Foundation and Empire are even higher as the Mule takes center stage, along with fan-favorites Bayta, Toran, Ebling and Magnifico Giganticus.”
Added Apple TV+’s head of programming Matt Cherniss: “We have all been incredibly impressed with the ambitious, action-packed and imaginative adaptation that David and the rest of this gifted creative team and cast have brought to life with this premium sci-fi series from day one. To watch Foundation become such a global hit has been beyond exciting with audiences around the world continuing to be captivated week after week by this dramatic and compelling journey to save humanity. We can’t wait for everyone to experience what is in store for characters old and new in Season 3.”
Adapted from Asimov’s influential book series, Foundation chronicles the journeys of four crucial individuals “transcending space and time as they overcome deadly crises, shifting loyalties and complicated relationships that will ultimately determine the fate of humanity,” per the official synopsis.
Season 2 wrapped on a shocking note with the death of — Spoiler alert! — Salvor, who, according to the novels, was poised to die later in the series.
“Salvor’s demise was something that we planned for Season 3,” Goyer previously told TVLine. “In the middle of writing the season, I proposed bringing it up to the end of the season because Salvor was going to die at the hands of the Mule at the end of [Season 3].” Her death showed that “no character has plot armor.”
The Mule briefly appeared in the finale, teeing up his game-changing arrival in Season 3. “He’s magnitudes of order more powerful than Tellem,” the EP teased. “When Asimov created [the Mule], it was a character that flipped the whole table over. When the Mule enters the story properly in Season 3, that’s completely what he does…. As crazy as the end of Season 2 is, Season 3 is even crazier. You haven’t seen anything yet.”

It’s a deeply flawed show but I’m still happy it was renewed, it’s great comfort viewing for me. And spectacular to look at!
This Kay agrees on all counts. Flawed, but enjoyable nonetheless!
Considering there had been two months’ of filming for Season 3 before the Hollywood strikes closed down production, this announcement seems a little belated!
Perhaps this is the official renewal news from Apple. The earlier scoop was not supposed to come out but someone discovered and leaked it by surprise.
Wonderful.. love this show…
Converting this book to a show was always going to be a big challenge.
I am enjoying the show as it is quite a lot. Some stellar acting from the cast
Lee Pace is in this?! Right on!!
Yay !
Finally! Some word on a 3rd season. My one hope is that the series pulls more from the magnificent works of Isaac Asimov. So far, there’s a lot of filler content about castle intrigue and power, where the books were centered more on psychohistory predictions and the Foundations’ effects on an ever changing cast of characters over spans of time.
If the viewers can take from the series that insightfulness which I took from the trilogy, then they too can see the how the world moves. I was able after reading the trilogy to see the fall of the Soviet Union, the inevitable outcome of Tiananmin Square, the difficulties of self-driving cars, and a great many other things unfolding now and over the years. It’s been a gift I hope viewers can share.
