Disney+ will not be continuing the story of American Born Chinese, with the streamer cancelling its adaptation of the hit graphic novel after one season, TVLine has confirmed. The news will come as a blow to fans considering the Season 1 finale ended on a whopper of a cliffhanger.
The series’ one-and-done season — all eight episodes of which dropped last May — followed a mythological god (played by Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh) whose life becomes entangled with an average American teenager (played by Ben Wang). The ensemble also included Yeoh’s Everything Everywhere All At Once castmates, fellow Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu.
Kelvin Yu (Bob’s Burgers) served as executive producer and showrunner. Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) was the primary director, in addition to serving as an EP.
Darn! I’ve heard such good things about this show but just haven’t found the time to check it out! Despite it ending on a cliffhanger, is the first season’s story strong enough to still warrant a watch?
Yes. IMHO, there are no wasted scenes/dialog – everything is there for a purpose. And beyond that, it’s fun adventure.
Thanks for answering…. I was just about to start watching this as well and wasn’t sure I’d even bother now.
I wanted to watch it too but if it was left on a huge cliffhanger and isn’t complete, I’m not sure that I’ll bother.
It’s a cliffhanger but it’s a “the adventure continues” type of cliffhanger, not a “the story feels incomplete” cliffhanger. It makes for a great lead to the next season but the first season is its own thing.
Thanks for your input!
I agree with Drew, still worth watching
This is a bummer. This was such a good show with smart writing and a great cast. I was looking forward to more.
It’s a shame, these Disney+ Originals are just not hitting with audiences. The full season dumps are not doing any favors either. After that first weekend people just forgot about it. So, if it’s not getting the views than it’s done whether it’s good or not.
This stinks. I really enjoyed this show and am really sad that it won’t continue.
There goes my day. At least we still have “The Brothers Sun”. so I can still get my Michelle Yeoh fix.
Michelle is one of my favorite actresses.
Terrible decision. Absolutely terrible. This was such a great show.
Disappointed to hear that, the series was done very well. Entertaining, great writing, story, characters and the acting. I mean, Michelle Yeoh, come on! Disney not only dropped the ball, they are stumbling over it lately.
How much of this decision was “not enough viewers” and how much was “purging things made under prior leadership”?
Probably a little bit of both. Also, Disney isn’t doing too good these days, they are trying to save money. They’ve been canceling excess weight from everywhere under Disney TV, like TV cancellations for Station 19 (which they have yet to give us a valid reason as to why it is ending), How I Met Your Father (which was a good sitcom that deserved more love), Freeform originals (probably went too woke over the years for the ABC Family audience), etc. Personally, a lot of the Disney+ content is always marketed like they were “Disney Channel shows”, which as a 30-ish millennial is a major turnoff. Give us fresh, elevated content that adults can also enjoy too. If not, you’ll just be the channel known for airing Bluey (which is Disney+’s highest-rated show).
Well, that is disappointing. I thoroughly enjoyed season 1 and was looking forward to a season 2.
It was not a good show. Episode 4 was terrible and come from nowhere. Besides the lead character was not sympathetic. However, it deserved a second season. They were improving and Michelle Yeoh is always a delight.
This was one of the few good series they launched in 2023. It’s a big shame for them
Unfortunate – I enjoyed the show.
figures, another actually good show gets cancelled too soon to make room for another boring star wars show
If it’s not Marvel or Star Wars it’s one and done.
Disappointing to see, such a good first season!
This was such a pleasant surprise as a show so this is a real shame
