You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here: Apple TV+ has officially cancelled The Afterparty after two seasons, TVLine has learned exclusively.
Each season of the killer comedy, from Chris Miller and Phil Lord (Last Man on Earth), revolved around a self-contained murder mystery and featured a new cast (save for leads Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson and Zoë Chao, all of whom appeared in both seasons.)
Season 2 (which wrapped on Sept. 6) followed the aftermath of a ruined wedding after the groom is found murdered. “Detective Danner (Haddish) returns to help Aniq (Richardson) and Zoë (Chao) solve the whodunnit by questioning family members, star-crossed lovers and business partners, and hearing each suspect’s retelling of the weekend, each with their own unique perspective and visual style,” per the official synopsis.
In the Season 2 finale, Zoë made a shocking (yet comedic) confession, Vivian made a big move to help the case and loads of guest-stars popped in for cameos, including Keke Palmer, Elijah Wood and Jaleel White (who’s playing the part of Sam in Danner’s movie). Martin Mull appeared as Sheriff Reardon, who finally agreed to listen to Danner and Aniq’s theory as they correctly nailed the killer. (Get all of the spoiler-y details in our recap.)
The sophomore season also starred John Cho (Selfie), Paul Walter Hauser (Cobra Kai), Ken Jeong (Community), Anna Konkle (PEN15), Poppy Liu (Hacks), Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds), Jack Whitehall (Good Omens), Zach Woods (Silicon Valley) and Vivian Wu (Away).
Sad we won’t be attending another Afterparty? Sound off in the comments.
Torn because I LOVED this show but how many murders can they stumble upon?(though i did have a theory about how they could do S3)
I had the same thought. Had it been renewed, the only thing I can think of is that it would revolve around Tiffany Haddish’s Detective Danner on a new case or is a suspect amongst a new cast of characters.
I’ve wondered the same with Only Murders in the Building but it was just renewed for its 4th season. I thought The Afterparty was unique and fun.
How many murders can Only Murders in the Building run into but yet it’s in its 4th season. The Afterparty definitely could have at least had another season.
Even the side mysteries were fun and surprising: Really, who would’ve thought those were the lyrics to MMMBop? The Afterparty was to murder mystery what Schmigadoon was to musicals and I’m grateful they both existed.
Season 2 was largely terrible so no big loss.
This is an extreme take, but it has some merit. S1 was buzzworthy. S2 was meh as far as coverage.
Well that is major disappointment.
Was really hoping for a third and final season. Truly a bummer, I thought the jokes were so smart. Enjoyed the two seasons!
This is tragic they could have done one more season run.
Loved the show. It was very enjoyable. Sorry it was not renewed. But no surprise – streaming services drop shows in the blink of an eye now a days.
Aww, that’s too bad. I really enjoyed the shows. I loved both seasons. They were a lot of fun and the casts were great. At least we had two seasons of it.
Travesty! I love this show. Was excited for season 3 and the movie premier After Party
Season 2 was not that great, maybe that’s because I watched it at the same time as Only murders in the building but it really suffers the comparison.
Azeroth, I agree. I started losing interest in season two and never finished it. Only Murders took my attention away.
The premises for seaons 3 were so good, this is really a bummer…
I’m a little disappointed. We just started season 2. I hadn’t even heard about this show until recently, but it must have been expensive to produce and wasn’t getting any kind of buzz.
You can still enjoy Season 2. It ended fine. I thought Season 2 was hilarious. I especially liked Travis’, Sebastian’s and Isabel’s eps.
One of the funniest shows ever created. This sucks. Hey HULU, Netflix..
This one hurts, but aside blaming Brett or Det Danner herself in the next murder mystery, I didn’t see how they make a season 3. I’ll miss this show though.
That is very disappointing news. It was a great show and deserves many more seasons. There is not a lot of good and interesting content on Apple TV lately
Eh. Enjoyed the first season but season 2 felt like it was trying too hard.
I DO NOT LIKE HADDISH AT ALL but I she is standable in this role, secondly how stupid are ALL these networks this second season was much much better than the first! I was thinking of all kinds of ideas for S3 BUT NOT THIS ONE YOU IDIOTS!!! PLEASE SOMEBODY WITH SENSE THAT CAN SCHEDULE SAVE THIS SHOW!
That’s wonderful news. It was a dreadful show.
😭😭😭 The second season was better than the first! I loved how each narrative was done in a different style.
Season One was brilliant– I couldn’t wait for the next episode. Season Two never rose to that same level. IMHO, when you have a short season and basically a year between seasons it’s a tough balancing act to reboard viewers and still come up with something fresh and in this genre the perfect blend of a well crafted mystery and hilarity.
Eh just as well–this show always felt like it should be funnier than it actually was–the all-star comedy cast felt wasted for most of it. Almost all of Apple’s stuff has been top-notch and looked great even if the show itself wasn’t terrific, but this one didn’t even really have that.
